1 The Sentinel March 2017 Volume 24 Issue 3 All Saint s Council #4240 Menomonee Falls, WI Dear Brother Knights, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE: And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land Ezekiel 22:30 Today in this world we are constantly being attacked by Satan. We see it in the persecution of Christians around the world, the increase in secularism, and all the anger and hate that is building and spreading around the globe. Satan has created multiple breaches in this world and we as Catholic men need to fill those breaches. We are kicking off our Into the Breach study group. It is a call to battle in defense of our Catholic faith and to help evangelize. Since 2000, 14 million Catholics have left the faith, parish religious education of children has dropped by 24%, Catholic school attendance has dropped 19%, infant baptism has dropped by 28%, adult baptism has dropped by 31%, and sacramental Catholic marriages have dropped by 41%. This is a serious breach, a gaping hole in Christ s battle lines. Gentlemen, this is how this program opens. The above paragraph is direct from the book. This program will address three primary questions. What does it mean to be a Catholic man? How does a Catholic man love? Why is fatherhood, fully understood, so crucial for every man? These questions will be answered over the course of this program. Join your fellow brothers and me at 5:30 pm before our membership meeting to learn how to be better Catholic men, to fill the breach. I want to welcome two new brothers to our council. On February 25 th brothers Jeremy Somers and Joe Pless joined our council. Congratulations on joining our council and we look forward to working and growing in our faith with you. I want to thank everyone who helped out with the Special Olympics Super Bowl party. It was a great time and a great success! Thank you to everyone who participated in the State Bowling tournament in Tomah/Sparta. We had some beautiful weather to terrorize the lanes. Next year s State Bowling tournament will be in Steven s Point (Plover). If you haven t yet, please RSVP for the St. Paddies Day dinner with Brother Mike Salomone soon! For those interested, Holy Hill will be hosting a 2 nd and 3 rd degree on March 25 th. Please contact me if you are interested. For those interested on April 1 st there is a group of brothers attending the Men of Christ conference. If you are interested in going, please let me know before March 14 th. We will be hosting a pancake breakfast at St. Mary s on Palm Sunday, April 9 th. If you would like to help, please contact Brother Mike Jansen. Annual Easter egg hunt in April 14 th. I want to thank all of you for your continued support in what we are achieving as a council. It is very much appreciated by myself and your fellow officers. Vivat Jesus, Mike Elmer-Grand Knight Knight of the Month: Paul Wettstein Paul is always looking to lend a helping hand. He recently stepped in and helped run the cribbage tournament during the Super Bowl party. He also keeps stepping with many of our events. From the fish boils, pancake breakfast, spaghetti dinner at St. Anthony, and much more. His effort and initiative is awesome. I appreciate everything you do for us Paul and thank you for all your efforts! Family of the Month: Mark and Sandy Wagner Mark and Sandy have the pulse of our council. These two do so much not only for our council but for the State council too. Mark is the Chairman for the state charity raffle and is lent a helping hand by his wonderful wife Sandy. They are also there to help when they can. From the Ducky Derby to ushering at Holy Hill, helping out at the fish boils, and much more. There aren t many people who know more about the Knights of Columbus than they do. We appreciate all that you do and I want to thank you both for your help and support. 1

2 Knight of the Year: Mike Jansen Brother Mike Jansen has not slowed down since completing his terms as Grand Knight. Mike can always be found helping out around the clubhouse. He helped maintain the yard, organize hall decorating, chairs the Tootsie Roll drive, coordinates the Memorial Day parade ceremony at the clubhouse, and is now our Corporation President. Mike really loves being our brother Knight and is not shy about showing it. Thank you very much Mike for your hard work and dedication to our council. Family of the Year: David and Michele Pittman David and Michele do a lot at St. Mary s in growing faith in the younger generation. They are both leaders in the young adults group Catalyst run through St. Mary s. They help coordinate events to bring younger adults together to live their faith and build on it. They also teach RCIA classes, introducing people to the Catholic faith and host study groups for books that are handed out at St. Mary s. David is on the pastoral council and ushers. This couple is also very active in recruiting people to join our council. It s wonderful to see a young family that live and grow their faith with everyone they can. Thank you David and Michele, you are truly inspirational to us all! Annual Tootsie Roll Drive Spring is right around the corner! Trees and flowers begin to bloom and the grass starts to get a little greener. It is also the time of year we hold the Annual Tootsie Roll Drive. This year, we have chosen the weekend of May 5-7 as our drive weekend. It is still a few months away, but we are looking for some volunteers to help make this a very successful weekend. We currently have 3 locations (possibly a 4 th ) and 3 parishes that we will be working with. Your ideas and suggestions are definitely more than welcome! If you are interested or have any questions please feel free to contact me at (262) or mdjansen78@gmail.com. Take care and may God Bless you. Sincerely, Mike Jansen- Past Grand Knight, Corporation President Hello Members, I need your help and it is not heavy of a task. Could all members send me an update of your personal information? I know you say, Hey, I ve been living in this place for the last 5 years, but KC's did not get any update for the last 5 years. Telephone numbers - did you drop a home phone number? This is a big problem. This past year I found out that 3 of our members have died, 2 members have moved out of State and 5 members have moved. I really feel bad when I call about dues and I get told that a member has died; one person asked how long do they have to pay the dues. I know everyone figures that someone will inform the Knights and I know everyone is very busy. This is a task that I would like the member do. Please show your wife, children and person that cares about you so they could let us know. We don't always find out. Thank You, Michael Bub-Financial Secretary, N74W13737 Appleton Ave #302,Menomonee Falls, WI , tele

5 CORPORATION NOTES: Dear Brother Knight, The Board introduced you to the Corporation s Capitol Needs campaign in early I am pleased to report that numerous Brothers have committed to ongoing support. Their pledge donations are truly appreciated but we really need all of our members to respond. Presently twenty-five percent of our membership has responded. You don t have to be a math wizard to deduct that seventy-five percent of our membership have not responded. Now is the time to commit. A committee, consisting of Brother Knights Dave Glisczinski, Tim Donlin, Jim Dwyer, George Schroder, Michael Krawzcyk, and Mike Vosen were assigned to research the needs of the club house. These include new windows, doors, and siding, which will ensure that our building blends into the updated community that surrounds our neighborhood. Please take into account that these improvements are not merely a cosmetic wish but a need due to a rotting exterior. The updates will cost approximately $ 70, We have secured almost $ 47, and would very much like to complete the work this spring but need a financial commitment from our membership. Thanks to those Brothers who have already provided support. As you can see we need more support to ensure our objective. Now is the time to send in your donations. A rendering of those plans are at the clubhouse for your review. You can also follow the progress of our campaign by reviewing the promotional thermometer now posted at the clubhouse. Let s get the mercury to rise. Without the active participation of our membership these improvements cannot proceed without forcing the Corporation to seek securing a loan and creating a liability. We need your donations! Please consider what you can do to help. Rick Plumley Capital Needs Campaign Chair Insurance Notes Protecting Widows A Founding Goal As a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve. When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we remain committed to this mission by offering insurance products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows. This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse s contract in the event of the insured s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur. Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact me today. Your dedicated Field Agent, Vic Johnson, FICF, LUTCF (262) , vic.johnson@kofc.org 5

8 Some of the gentlemen from The Hartfel House swung by the Clubhouse as we presented them with a check from the money we raised at the Annual Tootsie Roll Drive last year. They were overjoyed to say the least. It is our honor and a pleasure to have these gentlemen as a part of our family. Thank you so much to every volunteer that worked so hard to raise the money that make moments like these possible. 8
