2 Dear Friends: June 4 is the Day of Pentecost this year. Along with Christmas and Easter, Pentecost used to round out the Big Three holidays for Christians. In modern times Pentecost has been eclipsed by the other two holidays, but I for one believe it needs to rise to its former place of honor in the lives of practicing Christians. Without the Day of Pentecost there would be no Christian church. Without the Christian church, there would be no gospel of Jesus Christ in the world today, as it would have had no witnesses. Pentecost is the day on which the Holy Spirit fell upon a group of demoralized disciples of Jesus and gave them the strength and courage to proclaim the Resurrection they had lacked before. The annual celebration of this birthday of the church is a tribute to the power of the Holy Spirit to do the same thing today for today s disciples. It has always been difficult to describe what the Holy Spirit is and what it does. The New Testament is full of attempts to do this, and they all add to the richness of our understanding about this aspect of God. This Pentecost, I d like to share a story about one of these attempts. In equatorial Africa translators were trying to render the meaning of a Greek word for Holy Spirit Paraclete a word Jesus uses in John 14:16-18, in the Karre language. Paraclete is usually translated Advocate or Comforter in English, neither of which really captures the meaning of the Greek. Finding a word in Karre was even more difficult. One day the translators saw a group of porters going off into the bush carrying bundles on their heads. They noticed one didn t carry anything. They assumed he was the boss, who was present to make sure the others did their work. However, they discovered he was not the boss. Rather, he was present so that, should anyone fall over with exhaustion, this man would pick up the man s load and carry it for him. This porter was known in the Karre language as the one who falls down beside us. The translators had their word for Paraclete! The one who falls down beside us to carry our load when we are exhausted is a pretty good description of the Holy Spirit. Never more than today has the Christian church needed the reminder that the Holy Spirit is still among us to do this for those who ask him. As the Christian faith encounters indifference or hostility in our culture perhaps not all that different from what it encountered in the first century, Pentecost comes to us as to the first Christians as a source of courage and hope. Wear red on June 4 to show your thanks for the Holy Spirit and the church created by the Spirit! Pastor Barb ~A N ote from P astor B arb~ Page 2

10 ~PdC O pportunities for M inistry~ July is Blanket Month Church World Service TOOLS & BLANKETS create a rainbow of help and hope each time the right tool is placed in the hands of people in need. A simple truth: Ordinary things-things that we often take for granted like blankets...clean water...education tents...garden tools... seeds-can make a world of difference for people devastated by tragedy, as well as those working to build a better life for themselves and their communities. Tools of hope empower people and bring a better tomorrow! Envelopes will be available on Saturday and Sunday s or you can send a check to the church office, please mark it Tools & Blankets. Chicken Dinner Update Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! The Chicken Dinner and Bake Sale held at Huckleberry s Banquet Hall on April 27 th was again a success. A Big Thank You to all who helped in any way and/or donated to the event. Thanks to all those that worked on Thursday evening. Everything went smoothly at the dinner. We served 265 dinners (253 adults and 12 children). The total served was down 62 compared to last year. The number of Carry-outs served as part of the total was 102 which was also down from last year. The committee will be evaluating the reasons for the smaller turn-out and make changes for next year. We feel the concert at the Middle School had an impact on the attendance. However, the proceeds from the chicken dinner and basket raffles were $1148 after expenses. Thank you to those who donated the six Basket Raffle items. The winners of the Basket Raffles were: Stephanie White, Sarah Koppen, Karen Welter, Irene Wilkinson, Julie Hitchcock, and Irene Stading. The drawing for the quilt that was donated by Pastor Barb was held on Mother s Day, and the winner was Julie Oyen (Roger Bailey s daughter). Due to all the support in ticket purchases and donations toward the quilt raffle, the net income after expenses for the project was $1648. At the February Administrative Council meeting, it was approved to split the Chicken Dinner proceeds as follows: 25% to Healthy Snacks for Kids in the local school system, 25% toward apportionments, and 50% to the general budget. Therefore, the Global Concerns Committee will be donating $412 to the Healthy Snacks for Kids program, and a presentation will be made to Laura Stuckey at the BA Kennedy School. Pictures will be taken during the presentation and an article submitted to the Courier Press. The balance of the proceeds will be split $412 to apportionments and $824 to the general budget. The Youth Bake Sale was also a success with proceeds of $151. Thank you to all who donated baked goods for the bake sale. A special thank you to Jen for printing the posters, tickets, and preparing the letters that were mailed out. Diane Koth and Monte Steiber Co-Chairpersons MONTE STEIBER AND PASTOR BARB will attend Annual Conference in Middleton June The following weekend, June 24-25, they will give their report in worship. Plan to be present to learn what is happening today in the United Methodist Connection in our state. Page 10
