Dear Friends: Do you believe prayer makes a difference? That s what Sue Kibbey asked a group Mark Schreck and I attended at Annual Conference. She wrote the book Floodgates that we are studying in the Accountable Leadership Board. Most Christians would say yes, she said. But you wouldn t know from the way they act. For people who say they believe prayer is a power for good and a power for change, there isn t much praying going on. Her comment, with which I found myself agreeing, made me think of something the old preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick said about prayer something with which I also find myself agreeing! He said prayer is one way human beings have of co-operating with God. Further, he said, there are some September 2018 things God won t do unless people pray. I looked up the passage where Rev. Fosdick says that, and liked it so much I wanted to share part of it with you this month. I hope you will take time to dig through his kind of old-fashioned language. He makes the effort worth it: The experience of the race is clear that some things God never can do until he finds a man who prays. [Today, of course, we would include women.] We may well consider in how many ways God s will depends on man s cooperation. God himself cannot do some things unless men think. He never blazons his truth on the sky that men may find it without seeking And God himself cannot do some things unless men work. 2 FROM THE PASTOR: September Notes Continued%.. Will a man say that when God wants bridges and tunnels, wants the lightnings harnessed and cathedrals built, he will do the work himself? That is an absurd and idle fatalism. God stores the hills with marble, but he never built a Parthenon Now if God has left some things contingent on man s thinking and working why may he not have left some things contingent on man s praying? The testimony of the great souls is a clear affirmative to this: some things never without thinking; some things never without working; some things never without praying! Prayer is one of the three forms of man s cooperation with God. --From The Meaning of Prayer I believe our growth as a church, both spiritually and numerically, is one of the things contingent on our praying. If you agree, or even would just like to seriously test this idea, an event in Milwaukee October 20 could be just what you re looking for. It s called Breakthrough Prayer Initiative and will be led by Sue Kibbey. Any United Methodist church that can bring a team of at least 6 (five members or friends of the church plus a pastor) is welcome to attend. Should there be any 5 of you who would like to join me, I will clear my calendar to go. If you would like to simply read the chapter of Floodgates called Breakthrough Prayer Initiative please let me know that as well, and I will be happy to share it. Pastor Barb Pastor Barb Cook Union Sunday School Concert Series The unmistakable sounds of America s largest Kimball Pipe Organ come to life during the 38th annual Union Sunday School Concert Series this fall in Clermont, IA. While the concert series features highly trained musicians who perform a wide range of compositions, the Kimball is the star of the show. With 1,554 pipes some as tall as 16 feet you not only hear its notes, you feel them. Purchased by former Iowa Gov. William Larrabee as a gift to his daughter, Anna, in 1896, it was later gifted to the city of Clermont. If you love the sound of a full organ, you owe it to yourself to hear this one. A time to get to know each other, fellowship and to celebrate Fall for both Eastman & PdC Carpooling will be available from PdC A great time for PdC to try out worship in Eastman! PdC UMW Annual Fall Rummage Sale Friday, October 5th & Saturday, October 6th 8am-Noon Donations can be brought in beginning Sunday, September 30 after worship until October 4th at Noon. Volunteers are needed for set up and to help during the sale. Global Concerns/Church & Society Global Concerns will be providing and serving dinner at, Come to Supper on October 18th at St. Peter s Lutheran Church. Anyone interested in helping should contact Diane Koth. More info will follow in the October newsletter. What is Come to Supper? St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church has been offering a free, once-a-month community meal for more than nine years. On the third Thursday of every month, from 5:00 6:30 PM, we host Come For Supper. It is intended to be helpful to a variety of people; people in financial difficulty, people who might appreciate having some company at a mealtime, families stretched by tight schedules and little time to cook. We say come for any reason, and people do come. The meal is served and prepared by volunteers and usually includes a main dish, 1-2 sides, and a variety of delicious desserts from which to chose. We also serve milk, water, and coffee.

4 Do you have an interest in missions or in organizing fundraisers? If so, God may be calling you to serve in groups that are responsible for these ministries in our church. Joint committees for missions and fundraising are now being formed. Please let Jen or one of the pastors know if you have interest in these groups by September 1. PdC UMW Our next meet will be our Salad Luncheon at Noon on September 12th. Sharon Anderson will have the program. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Pasty Dinner, September 25th and Rummage Sale, October 5 & 6. Sharon Anderson will attend worship in Eastman to discuss the UMW programs and possible interest from Eastman members. Accountable Leadership Board Meeting Summary August 8th at 5:30 at PdC 1. Meeting opened with a prayer. Spiritual Growth was presented by Pastor Barb. Small groups to discuss this months topic. 2. Review of meeting minutes and Strategic Goals. 3. Our D.S. Scott Carlson was present to discuss chapter 2 of the book Flood Gates. 4. Discussion of our September, Building a Stronger Community. Will meet on 9/23 at Eastman Ball Park for potluck and yard games. People are encouraged to try out church in Eastman that morning. 5. SPRC Pastor Mike was approved to cover pastor emergencies while Pastor Barb and Pastor Lynn are away. 6. D.S. Scott Carlson presented on the process for church mergers. 7. Trustees Report the prison will have prisoners paint at the parsonage on September 11 & 12. Repairs the to the PdC roof are being looked into. Nothing from Eastman. 8. /Education: Teams are being formed. Groups will hold meeting soon. 9. Programming: we will look for volunteers to handle coffee hour. Discussion of PdC holding coffee hour before or after worship. 10.Missions/Fundraising: Date has been set for Pasty Dinner 9/25. Diane Koth is chair. UMW would like to invite Eastman members to PdC meetings. Sharon Anderson will present at Eastman. 11. Finance: Monte Steiber presented Finance Report. Discussion of property taxes for parsonage and process of how to handle the deposit for Eastman offerings. Bonnie Sheckler will reach out to Eastman for volunteers to help. 5 PdC VBS Eastman VBS Special thanks to our volunteers, teachers, parents and those who donated items to make 2018 VBS such a big success!! Martha Circle We will meet for the first time this fall on Sept. 5th at 6pm to share a meal together. I plan to prepare a chicken and rice dish. There will be enough for all. If you wish just bring something to accompany the main dish. I will furnish beverages. Bring your own place settings. The program will be, Embrace Wholeness from the Response Magazine bible study series. Based on the scripture from Luke 4: To help us experience wholeness, build trust and to really know each other, small groups and sharing the meal and being able to share our stories is a good way to start. Please, if you would be interested in any part of this program join us and get to know us. The program will follow the meal. Everyone is welcome! My number is if you need more information. 7 Scrip Fundraiser For years the PdC UMC has been participating in the Scrip Fundraiser. The revenue earned from Scrip sales has been applied to apportionments. It is our hope that with our Shared Ministry, the Eastman UMC will join in this fundraiser. What is Scrip? Scrip fundraising is a no-selling program that enables families to raise money for their church. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards. You purchase gift cards at face value, and your coordinator orders those cards at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for your church. It s really that simple! Not only do you earn a rebate for the church, you also earn a tax-deductible donation for yourself. What Scrip gifts cards are available? Great Lakes Scrip Center offers more than 700 of the country s biggest retailers, including grocery, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, home improvement, and more. Locally you can buy scrip cards for Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, BP, Kwik Trip, Subway, Cabela s, Hardees, Papa Murphy s, Pizza Hut and many more. How do I order: In Eastman: Order sheets and a list of retailers are available at the church. If you wish to order, fill out the order sheet and include your payment. Orders will go along with the offerings. Jen will place your orders on Monday mornings by 10am. Orders can be picked up in the office on Thursdays or the following Sunday at the Eastman UMC. Another option would be to call or Jen with your orders and make arrangements to pay. In PdC: Orders and payment can be made on Sunday and dropped in the offering plate. Or call or Jen with your order. There is no change to our ordering system for PdC. Please contact Jen with any questions about this fundraiser! Eastman Rock Solid Rock Solid is a mix of our favorite children s ministry opportunities Sunday School and Vacation Bible School! On the first Wednesday of the month during the school year, kids in grades 4K-5 meet from 5:30 7:15 PM to share a meal and participate in age appropriate bible stories, songs, games, crafts, and lots of fun!
