2 ~A N ote from Pastor B arb~ Dear Friends: One of the people helping to clear space in the church library to make room for some new cabinets for Weight Watchers came across a picture of John Wesley among the stack of things we were sorting. It was in pretty tough shape faded, a few nicks in the frame. Plus, Wesley s face was rather grim and forbidding not a character you d want to recruit as a greeter. Do you think we should put that in the rummage sale pile? I asked. She thought a moment, then said, No. It s not very pretty, but Wesley is what holds us together. I think we should find a place for it on a wall when we make it as far as a wall. Her plan for that picture was wiser than mine. Wesley s way of understanding what it means to follow Jesus IS what holds us together, and because of that his picture belongs on a wall and not in a rummage sale. As the Shared Ministry Committee continues to meet, I have thought sometimes about that day in the library. Eastman, Prairie du Chien and Wauzeka United Methodist Churches have a common theological heritage in John Wesley that could help us become one church in three places if that is in fact what the committee recommends and a good majority of the church members support. At least, our common theology could help us if we all knew what it was. Many United Methodists today, including some who want John Wesley on their church s wall, don t know much about he said. And that is sad, because much of what he said is worth knowing. I m going to try to reduce Wesley Ignorance in a small way on October during worship at PdC UMC. On that weekend all the hymns will be by Charles Wesley, John s brother, who wrote 6,000 of them. (We ll only be doing five, however a number I got from the British Methodists who describe a Methodist worship service as a hymn sandwich.) The message will be on Wesley s three Rules for the Methodist Societies that have been in every version of the Methodist, now United Methodist Discipline in the United States since the first one in For help with this I ll be turning to Bishop Rueben Job s book called Three Simple Rules a book well worth the modest investment to any United Methodist. Many church historians believe that John Wesley s theology and his way of communicating it to the poor and working classes of 18 th century England kept England from a bloody revolution like the French had at that time. I think those historians are right. We have a wonderful heritage! We can be proud of and grateful for it. A good way to end, I think, would be with Wesley s justifiably greatest hit quote: Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can. With you in ministry, Pastor Barb P.S. Don t forget our annual Charge Conference on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m. in the PdC UMC Fellowship Hall. All the churches of our circuit (Eastman, Mt. Hope, PdC and Wauzeka) will be with together. This is an excellent chance for learning and fellowship, as well as a necessary meeting for church business. Page 2
3 ~H appening s In E astm an & W auzeka~ The end of September I found myself sitting 5 days with my dear 88 year old Canada fishing buddy, Jake, as he slowly passed from this life into the next. I also found my heart filled with both sorrow AND joy. Sorrow because my loss on this side of heaven is great. He provided for me a home away from home, guidance like the North Star, a foundation of unwavering support and love. Joy because he is reunited with the love of his life whom he lost to cancer 4 years ago. It is amazing that our hearts can hold such two powerful and overwhelming emotions at the same time! But its possible when we remember that God is our ultimate North Star and foundation who has provided us a home away from THIS home whenever that time comes. A Leaf of Threes A sugar maple leaf I see, Fallen from a sturdy tree. Three points around a single stem, Three veins that reach up to the ends. Three colors come together and blend, Gold and orange and brown on the edge. A message from this leaf of threes, Of faith and hope and love for thee. Faith on the left and hope on the right, Love in the center with the greatest height. This leaf of threes drifted from above, As gently and peacefully as a white winged dove. In my Good Book I will press it in trust, That it will not wither and die and turn to dust. And when upon this sugar maple leaf I glance, I feel the power of the Holy Trinity and not by chance. by Inspirational Mom found on Page 3

6 ~N ew s You Can U se~ Apple Sharlotka A deliciously light and fluffy Russian apple cake. Ingredients: 4 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, quartered and thinly sliced 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg Pinch of kosher salt 3 large eggs 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract Confectioners sugar, for dusting How to Make It Step 1 Preheat the oven to 350. Grease the bottom and side of an 8-inch spring-form pan. Step 2 In a large bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of the sugar and let stand for 15 minutes. Step 3 Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk the flour with the cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the eggs with the almond extract and the remaining 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar at medium-high speed until thick and pale yellow and a ribbon forms when the beaters are lifted, 8 to 10 minutes. Gently fold in the dry ingredients just until incorporated. Step 4 Spread the apples in the prepared pan in an even layer, then pour the batter evenly over them. Let stand for 5 minutes to allow the batter to sink in a little. Step 5 Bake the sharlotka for about 1 hour, until it is golden and crisp on top and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Transfer to a rack and let rest for 15 minutes. Unmold and transfer to a serving platter. Dust with confectioners sugar and serve warm. 2nd Fifty August Event Held at St. Peter Lutheran Church We ll be meeting on October 31st Halloween Day for a celebration.
