2 Dear Friends: Many years ago I got to visit Norway and see where my grandfather Leivestad s family had lived for generations before emigrating to America. One stop on our trip was in a Norwegian cemetery where I saw something that comes to my mind every Thanksgiving. Some of the tombstones had Takk for Alt written in large letters above the name of the person buried there. Takk for Alt, I learned, means Thanks for Everything. Instead of saying Rest in Peace Norwegians say Thanks for Everything. Norwegians are on to the Biblical truth the Apostle Paul gave us in Ephesians when he urged the church to give thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:20). To give thanks at all times for everything is the Christian s proper stance toward the world because God s surpassing gift of Jesus Christ makes it possible not only to rejoice in every good thing but also to transcend every grief, loss and sorrow. Thanks for everything belongs on every Christian s tombstone if we really understand our redeemed condition. Giving thanks is easy in the autumn in Wisconsin because of the stunning beauty of our landscape and the rich produce of our land. But giving thanks is not usually easy. Human beings find it far easier to find what s wrong in their present circumstances, whatever they are, than to find what is blessed in them. When Christ healed ten lepers, only one returned to give him thanks, though it must have been the best day of life in years for all ten of them. Gratitude, it seems, does not come naturally to us. For this reason, Thanksgiving is a crucial holiday to keep in the calendar. It is a day on which to deliberately focus on what is right with our country, our church, our families and ourselves as practice for doing this on other days as well. I think developing the attitude of gratitude, the habit of seeing blessing in every circumstance, was what Paul had in mind when he said, be transformed by the renewal of your mind. The world looks different transformed when you re grateful. It looks better. In fact, it looks enough better that at the end you can say, Thanks for everything. Happy Thanksgiving, --Pastor Barb ~A N ote from P astor B arb~ Page 2
3 Eleven miles off the east coast of Scotland, in the North Sea, stands the Bell Rock Lighthouse. It has endured the ferocious onslaught of the North Sea's violent storms since It rests upon less than one acre of solid rock. That small reef is covered by seawater for 20 hours of every day. The builder of the lighthouse, Robert Stevenson and his band of 65 skilled artisans, had only 4 hours each day to chink away the stone and gouge a foundation in the rock. As a result of this painstakingly patient work, the 115-foot-tall lighthouse is still in use today. In a similar way, parents have a short period of time in which to build their children's lives to withstand the storms of life. Parents must take advantage of that window of opportunity and carve out a foundation for them on solid rock. I will show you what it s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins. Luke 6:47-49 (NLT) While I am sure everyone agrees it is important to build a spiritual foundation for our children and youth, it appears that Sunday morning Sunday School is not the best option for this effort. As a church, it is our goal to support and enable parents to be the spiritual teachers of their children God calls them to be, but I am not sure how or more importantly WHEN to provide this assistance for our families. In the mean time, we will continue to joyfully welcome all ages into worship, providing a Children s Time, kids bulletins and activity bags for the young at heart each Sunday morning. As you will see in this newsletter, we have already begun our plans for the anticipation (Advent) and birth (Christmas) of God s son! I hope and pray YOU will, likewise, prepare ahead to lead your family and friends in celebrating the true reason for the season taking advantage of the many opportunities your church is providing to do so. I look forward to Rock Solid which will focus on the meaning of Advent and Christmas on the 1 st Wednesdays of November and December. As always, I remain committed to God and to you in bringing the light of Christ to our communities! Check It Out.Please! November! This month was always designated to recognize public education. Our Church Library is beginning our fifth year helping out with a Sunday School Program. Students are given book bags with 2 books to take home. When the books have been read and returned, they receive 2 more books. Our library has a fine selection and these books have been used to supplement their at home reading time. Megan Steiber, Gavin Whalen and Trenton Childs have read through several shelves of books in our library. Recently some new books have been added one is Juliette Kinzie by Kathy Crowley Conn is another book from the Badger Biography series. In 1830 Juliette moved from her fancy Connecticut home to a rustic log cabin in what would later become Wisconsin. Her husband John worked as an Indian Agent at Fort Winnebago at the area that would become Portage, WI. They lived there for 3 years but they were given years marked with war, hunger and great change for Indians and settlers alike. Juliette Kinzie stood up for the Indians who were always at the losing side of the U.S government treaties. The Kinzie s were sent to Chicago to become the agent at Ford Dearborn. They became two of Chicago s leading citizens. This story has something to do with the organization of the Girl Scouts of America. It is a very interesting book for young readers. Some adults would be interested in Juliette Kinzie s autobiography Wau-Ban: The Early Day in the North-West. It is a story of adventure and resilience on the Wisconsin frontier. Both books certainly give us pause to remember that first Thanksgiving when peoples of different cultures came together to share a bountiful harvest and gave thanks! Happy Thanksliving! 10 ~Let us take time to give to the Lord this Christmas season. We can do that by serving those who are less fortunate and by truly loving each other. In this way, we can give to the Lord. After all, He truly is the reason for the season.~ PdC Operation Santa Is Here Again!! Non-perishable food items and new toys can be brought to our Church for distribution to Operation Santa!!! These items can be placed in the wrapped box in the Narthex. The deadline is December 1st. NOTE: All Items Must Be New. PdC Cap and Mitten Tree! November 1st we will have a tree in the Narthex for mittens, gloves & caps for those in our community who are in need. We donate them to Operation Santa and they are picked up by December 1st. Please help fill the tree with caps and mittens of any size. Blessings for Christmas Every year the people of the PdC UMC congregation helped adopt a family for Christmas. This has made it possible for a family to have Christmas gifts for their entire family, plus a Christmas Dinner. The families have been so appreciative of the help we have been able to provide. Again this year, our office manager Jen, will be coordinating this project. There are 2 ways you can help in this ministry. The first is to donate money. Checks can be written to the UMC, please note Christmas Family on your check. The second way is to do some shopping of your own. If you d like to shop, Jen can give you the details. If you d like adopt a family of your own, contact Jen in the church office for details. This has been a real blessing for these families and we look forward to helping provide a blessed Christmas again this year! Salvation Army Volunteers Needed! Thanks to the generous volunteers our community we are able to keep the Salvation Army alive and active in Crawford County. Last year we were able to raise an outstanding $18,000 during our Red Kettle Bell Ringing Season. This was an all time high for our county! Our fundraising season is fast approaching and we are looking for volunteers to ring the bell again for this worthy cause. Last years donations helped so many families with food, emergency lodging, RX, gas, utilities, school supplies, coats, shoes, rent...the list goes on and on. Our programs continue to grow! Our Bell Ringing Season begins November 20th and goes through Christmas Eve. The PdC UMC is recruiting volunteers for the weekend of Nov. 27th Nov. 29th at Walmart. You can sign-up during worship or by calling the church office. Other dates and times are available. And you can like us on Facebook for important information.
