2 ~A N ote from Pastor B arb~ Dear Friends: November is the month when we Americans are invited each year to take stock of our blessings and thank God for them. If every one of us would in fact do this, I believe the bitter divisions that characterize so much of our public life these days would be very much softened. There is something about gratitude that heals anger, resentment, envy, fear and so much else that ails us. This Thanksgiving, I would like to share with you a story of Fred Craddock s about gratitude that shows its power. When a colleague of his in ministry with a terminal disease knew that his death was near, he asked Craddock to come to see him. I have something to show you, he said. What is it? said Craddock. He said, Come on in here, so Craddock went into his study. His friend handed him an order of worship. Craddock looked at it and said, What s this? He said, This is the way I d like my funeral to be. I love these songs and these scriptures and all. Craddock said, Oh, Bob, my goodness. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, said Bob. We ve worked it out, my wife and I. It seemed morbid to Craddock heavy, he couldn t shake it off. A few days later they were going through that order of worship. Craddock said, When the congregation stood to sing Now Thank We All Our God, in came his widow, wearing a red hat. Can you believe it? Gratitude for life enabled that couple to face death with hope and courage. Gratitude has that much power. When a person ponders really ponders the grace that has brought him, or brought her, safe thus far, gratitude bubbles up like an underground spring. God s generosity keeps us alive day by day, and at the end provides for us as we approach the unknown shore. And along the way, what beauties and chances at love are ours. How, as the old hymn goes, can I keep from singing? Gratitude is the first, and most basic, expression of our generosity towards God; it is the magic ingredient that makes our relationship with God succeed, as it is in any relationship. The ecumenical Thanksgiving service in Prairie du Chien will be on Wednesday, November 22 at 7 p. m. at the Cornerstone Church. I hope you will join me there. With gratitude for you and for our common ministry, Pastor Barb Page 2

3 ~H appening s In E astm an & W auzeka~ Though skeptical of his teenage son's newfound determination to build bulging muscles, one father followed his teenager to the store's weight-lifting department, where they admired a set of weights. "Please, Dad," pleaded the teen, "I promise I'll use 'em every day." "I don't know, Michael. That s really a commitment on your part," the father said. "Please, Dad?" "They're not cheap either," the father said. "I'll use 'em, Dad, I promise. You'll see." Finally won over, the father paid for the equipment and headed for the door. After a few steps, he heard his son behind him say, "What! You mean I have to carry them to the car?" How often do we likewise make a promise, then find our COMMITMENT that is, following through on that promise we ve made wavering. If you claim the name Christian then you have made a PROMISE to follow Christ, his way, his truth, his life. But when was the last time you examined your COMMITMENT determined if you are truly following through on your promise AND growing in faith? That s exactly what we will be doing during November in Eastman and Wauzeka using the program guide, Commitment to Christ - learning to live a more generous life. Each week we will explore a key area of discipleship in our journey to growth in faith with Jesus. And each week individuals will be challenged to grow to take one step up from his/her current level of commitment. Don t wimp out on your promise! Let s make sure we re GROWING in our commitment to share the Good News of God s love in Christ! Together in the Ministry of Christ, Pastor Lynn This year s Confirmation Class in Eastman is amazing and challenging. Their questioning minds and open hearts are keeping Pastor Lynn on her toes. Please be in prayer for these youth as they explore church membership and begin their lifetime journey of faith: Abby Feye, Vince Feye, Jayden Glasbrenner, Aisja Horten-Achenbach, Gabey Lenzendorf, Jacob Payne. 10 ~Let us take time to give to the Lord this Christmas season. We can do that by serving those who are less fortunate and by truly loving each other. In this way, we can give to the Lord. After all, He truly is the reason for the season.~ PdC Operation Santa Is Here Again!! Non-perishable food items and new toys can be brought to our Church for distribution to Operation Santa!!! These items can be placed in the wrapped box in the Narthex. The deadline is December 1st. NOTE: All Items Must Be New. PdC Cap and Mitten Tree! November 1st we will have a tree in the Narthex for mittens, gloves & caps for those in our community who are in need. We donate them to Operation Santa and they are picked up by December 1st. Please help fill the tree with caps and mittens of any size. Blessings for Christmas Every year the people of the PdC UMC congregation helped adopt a family for Christmas. This has made it possible for a family to have Christmas gifts for their entire family, plus a Christmas Dinner. The families have been so appreciative of the help we have been able to provide. Again this year, our office manager Jen, will be coordinating this project. There are 2 ways you can help in this ministry. The first is to donate money. Checks can be written to the UMC, please note Christmas Family on your check. The second way is to do some shopping of your own. If you d like to shop, Jen can give you the details. If you d like adopt a family of your own, contact Jen in the church office for details. This has been a real blessing for these families and we look forward to helping provide a blessed Christmas again this year! Salvation Army Volunteers Needed! Last year we were able to raise an outstanding $19,000 during our Red Kettle Bell Ringing Season. Our fundraising season is fast approaching and we are looking for volunteers to ring the bell again for this worthy cause. Last years donations helped so many families with food, emergency lodging, RX, gas, utilities, school supplies, coats, shoes, rent...the list goes on and on. Our programs continue to grow! Our Bell Ringing Season begins November 24th and goes through Christmas Eve. The PdC UMC is recruiting volunteers for the weekend of Nov. 24th Nov. 26th at Walmart. You can sign-up during worship or by calling the church office. Other dates and times are available. And you can like us on Facebook for important information.
