3 Downtown Music Series Presents Jamie Dubberly and Orquesta Dharma Friday, November 11, :00 pm FUMC Sanctuary Tickets $15.00 Join us for an unforgettable evening of energetic music! Grammy-winning trombonist Jamie Dubberly formed Orquesta Dharma in 2008 as a studio project to record some original Afro-Cuban jazz material he had written and arranged. Since then the group has released two highly successful albums, and has performed live to enthusiastic audiences all over Northern California. The group's debut album "Road Warrior" (2011), won the Latin Jazz Corner's "next generation album of the year", and appeared in Latin Beat Magazine's top 10 albums of the year. Their current release, "La Clave del Gumbo" (2014), is a fusion of New Orleans style brass band and soul music, with Afro-Cuban jazz and salsa, and has received critical acclaim, reaching the CMJ and Jazz Week charts and peaking at #2 on the NYC based salsa charts (NewGenSalsa) with their version of the iconic salsa dura classic "La Esencia del Guaguanco. Latin Jazz Network's Raul DeGama describes the music from La Clave del Gumbo as an "explosion of rhythm adorning inebriated melody and harmony," in his April 5, 2015 review of the CD, which was selected as "Album of The Week". Tickets are available by calling the church office or at the door the night of the concert. For individual tickets or Season Tickets contact Arvin Berner, Director of Music at arvinberner@firstumcmodesto.org. See Upcoming Events for a list of concerts.

This year we are excited about our Advent Series: "The Real Christmas Story." It will be an exhilarating time of worship with vibrant and poignant music, theatrical illustrations and worship design, and a meaningful message to root us in the "Real Christmas Story." Many times, we hear the fairy tale version of the Christmas story, but this advent season we will focus on the historical occurrences and learn new meanings from our well known scriptures. Each Sunday we focus on a particular character in the nativity narrative. Please put these dates on your calendar! November 27 - First Sunday of Advent [Shepherds] December 4 - Second Sunday of Advent [Maji] December 11 - Third Sunday of Advent [Christmas Cantata/ Mary] December 18 - Fourth Sunday of Advent [Joseph] December 25 - Christmas DAY! This is another great opportunity to invite your friends and families to worship during this special season.
