We begin our journey through Lent with a quiet service on Ash Wednesday and conclude on Easter Sunday with a day filled with rejoicing, celebration, friends and family. 2 March 2019 To the Saints that are in Los Osos, On March 6, we observe Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent when we walk with Jesus on his relentless march to the cross. Lent is a time to consider the darker sides of our faith the reality of distress, the possibility of pain, the recognition that the way of Jesus is sometimes difficult or even painful, the fact that sometimes doubt may threaten to overwhelm us. I am writing this on Monday, February 25, as I watch what is happening at the General Conference. This Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday when we commemorate Jesus revealing his glory to James, John and Peter, but at the moment it feels more like the Via Dolorosa. On the other hand, they are far from finished in their discussions, to say nothing of actually voting on a plan. As you know, I am a great believer in observing the seasons of the church because they each speak to us at different times in our lives. Besides giving us reasons to change the color scheme in the sanctuary they give shape and form to the Church s movement through the year. They also remind us that Christian faith has a destination as well as a path. The path takes a great turning at the cross and an even greater one at the resurrection, but it continues to climb toward the final fulfillment of the Reign of God. Lent, despite its difficulties, or perhaps more properly because of them, calls us on toward the light and joy of Easter and the building of the kingdom until it is ready for the King. Whatever happens in St. Louis today and tomorrow whether we see the light of Easter or are left in the shadows of Lent we know that God s love reigns in the end. Whatever happens, God is with us. Whatever happens, we will continue to strive to love as God loves. Whatever happens, God is still God. See you in Church, Have you thought about joining the church? 3 Monday Night Home Group Continues 6:30 8:00 p.m. This group gathers at the Lindsay home every Monday night. You may contact Kathy or Mike for more details or the address. Tuesday Home Group Continues 3:30 5:00 p.m. Tuesday Home Group begins a new seven-week series, starting February 26 th, at the Eggleston/Murta home. We ll be looking at the Core Teachings of Christ in Luke Chapters 6-12, completing one chapter each week. March 5 th will be Luke Chapter 7. All are invited to attend just one week or every week. GROW OUR GIVING Little by little, a little becomes A LOT Opportunities abound to create donations to Trinity while going about your normal routine: Drop your change into your little church at the end of each day; ask stores like Ralph's and Amazon to donate to Trinity when you shop. 4 UMW NEWS MARCH 2019 Our unit of United Methodist Women is preparing to observe the 150 th anniversary of its founding on Sunday, March 24. We are looking forward to sharing its history of women in mission in the past and its presence in the world today. We invite the congregation to attend and learn about this organization and its long history of being in mission, here and around the world. The schedule below indicates regular meetings and times. The book club does not study one book but invites participants to talk about books they have read. For more information, call Donna Asire: Music Notes In recent weeks, our Chancel Choir has enjoyed several visitors, who were in town for a short time and kindly agreed to sing with us. Some are relatives of choir members, some are seasonal visitors to Los Osos. A new and fun trend has been invented in which a substitute singer from our own congregation fills in for an absent choir member. It is such a pleasure to welcome and become acquainted with these new friends. Another recent visitor made the offer of a library of handbell music, which we gratefully accepted. All of which should remind us that, when we are welcoming, friendly and inclusive, with visitors and with each other, we are all enriched. 4

6 Health and Safety News Special thanks go to these persons who have contributed to our well-being in worship or other events at Trinity: To Karen and Everett Shong, for the donation of a wheelchair, which will be kept at the back of the sanctuary by the double doors on the L.O.V.R. side, To Joe Asire, for constructing and installing the beautiful hand rails on both sides of the chancel steps, To Barbara Hoff, for locating and initiating the purchase of a portable ramp allowing for wheelchair access to the chancel, To Elizabeth and Bob Clover, for organizing semi-annual cleanup of the sanctuary, kitchen and Fellowship Hall. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and actions to keep all of us safe and healthy while on our campus. We will have at least seven chilies to judge, including one recipe that brought home the blue ribbon in The oldest church of color west of the Alleghenies and a Vegetarian Chile Ole! There will also be three corn breads to sample, plus salad and make it yourself ice cream cones. Please bring your own table service. We will provide small bowls so that you can taste and compare the chilies without getting them mixed. Bring the family! We ll see you in the Fellowship Hall at 5:00pm, Sunday, March 3 rd. 6

10 Sunday School Helpers needed: If you are interested in helping Kasey during the Sunday School hour, please sign up for one Sunday. Sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall. She may not need help, based on attendance, but we wanted to make sure she has plenty of help if needed. Thank you for your support of the children at Trinity. Sign up to provide altar flowers. Choose a date, write a special dedication (or not), bring your flowers on Sunday morning. The sign-up sheet is posted in the Social Hall. It is not too early to start thinking about adorning our sanctuary with Lilies for Easter Sunday. Beginning in April there will be a Lily sign-up sheet in the Social Hall. You may also fill out an Easter Lily Dedication Request, which will be included in the bulletin, a few weeks before Easter. Another option would be to bring in loose flowers to decorate the cross on Easter Sunday. Watch the weekly bulletins for more details 10

The focus will be on moving from Fellowship to Hospitality, exploring the stages of hospitality and authentic relationships between us and the people God cares about. This workshop will be led by Pastor Jim Powell, North District Superintendent. Afternoon Workshops (1:15 2:45PM): 1. STAFF-PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE The Staff-Parish Relationship Committee is a required group of dedicated church members who have the privilege of being a support and accountability group for clergy and staff. This training will help equip and encourage SPRC members to come alongside their pastors and staff with encouragement and guidance. This workshop will be led by Pastor Jim Powell, North District Superintendent. 2. LIFE-CHANGING SMALL GROUPS This session helps breathe life into a stuck or comfortable church. Participants will see small groups as a ministry that grows disciples and builds community. They are a great way to do life together. Life- Changing Small Groups covers how to start and grow various types of small groups, how to identify and train leaders, and how church-wide studies can help establish and support the small group ministry at your church. This workshop will be led by Pastor Mary Dennis, Change Manager, North & East Districts. 12
