1 The Magnolian Magnolia United Church of Christ where spirit and compassion meet Volume XLVII, No. 12 January 2017 A Winter Book Study with Pastor Joy and Scott: Waking Up White by Debby Irving Monday evenings: January 23, 30, Feb 6 and 13 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. John Dorhauer, the Executive Minister for the United Church of Christ has invited local churches across the country to engage in sacred conversations on race with a focus in 2017 on the impact of white privilege. Dorhauer writes: America is growing more racially divided. Our hope is that we will open our eyes to the privilege we carry without even realizing it, and awaken to how it impacts inequality across our country every day. With the encouragement of a colleague who grew up in this congregation (Rev. Mike Bennett), I have chosen to step into this important and difficult conversation by using this thoughtful book. He used it in his congregation and found it very meaningful. My hope is that we will enter into this time together with curiosity, honesty, gentleness and care. I found a copy of the book on Amazon you might check the local Magnolia bookstore or library for a copy. If you need assistance with locating a book please let the MUCC office know right away. 2 Annual Congregational Budget Meeting After worship January 29th We will meet in the parlor after coffee hour to discuss and vote on the 2017 MUCC Budget. If you are an active participant in the life of MUCC but not a voting member, you still have an important voice in this process, so members and friends, please be sure to join us. A budget sheet will be available by the 15 th for people to look over. Personnel news We are happy to announce that our interim musician, Will Gerhardt, at recommendation by the MUCC Council, has accepted the permanent position of Music Accompanist. Yippee! We traditionally study the lectionary passages for the coming Sunday. Dear friends, My Final Instructions Worksheet This past year our congregation has lost a number of beloved long-time members and friends. A few of them had taken the time to fill out this form years ago which we then had on file at the office. It was very helpful to be able to have this resource available as their life-celebrations were prepared. Most of us avoid thinking about the end of our lives --- and yet doing so has a mysterious way of making the life we are living all the more meaningful and precious. Having conversations with trusted loved ones about how we want to die and how we want to be remembered is a gift to them as well. Before the month of January goes by, I invite you to sit down and fill out the My Final Instructions worksheet found here, make a copy for yourself and a loved one, and be sure a copy comes to the church office where it will be held in confidence. The potluck luncheon and lingerie benefit for the women of Mary s Place on Sunday, February 12 at 11:45 am! Mary s Place lingerie benefit and potluck Feb. 12. MUCC ladies: It s time once again to shop for undergarments for the women of Mary s Place (a shelter for homeless women) and a gathering of these items at a women s festive potluck luncheon in Pilgrim Hall s Fireside Room immediately after coffee hour on Sunday, February 12 (around 11:30). We encourage women of all ages to participate. Whether you can only afford to buy one item, no items, or can fill bags with items from local sales, you are welcome. No tally of how much each person brings will be taken; all the items are pooled together, sorted and then delivered with our prayers to Mary s Place. Please look for bras and underpants that are comfortable, easy-care and dignified but pretty is okay! If you would like to shop for the ladies of Mary s Place, but are unable to attend the potluck, please bring the items to the church office and we ll make sure they get to the gathering, and then, of course, to the shelter. 4 MUCC Community Meals You are invited to share a meal and engage in (fascinating) conversation. In smaller groups of we will gather for a potluck meal at the home of one of our members. There are four opportunities to participate in these gatherings: Friday, January 27 at 7PM Sunday, February 5 at 1PM Friday, February 10 at 7PM Sunday, February 19 at 1PM This is an opportunity to grow stronger and deeper as a community and also consider the changing church. Sign up sheets will be available outside the parlor, or you can RSVP by contacting Scott at: scott@magnoliaucc.org Tent City Five (TC5) A sign-up sheet for helping with preparation of the January 16 and February 20 meals is on the Get Involved table near the Parlor. Peter s Place I want to thank all who help cook and deliver dinner to Peter's Place and welcome anyone who would like to join our team. Thank you, Nancy Evans Facilities Update Pilgrim Hall/Fireside Room Curtains The Fireside Room curtains have been cleaned and the linings replaced. The Pilgrim Hall curtains have been shortened, cleaned and the linings replaced. Thanks to Bob Flack for coordinating this project. Take a look at the results. We think you ll be pleased. The curtains should now be in good shape to last quite a few more years. Paint Project The preschool has completed repainting all of the classrooms in the basement. Now it is our turn to paint the corridors and the entry hall from the parking lot. If you have the time and inclination to help us make this a volunteer project, we d love to hear from you. We think that we should be able to do this work without hiring professional painters, thus saving quite a bit of money for other important projects. Please contact any of the facilities members with your willingness and availability. Parlor Kitchen Remodel We now have a preliminary design for the parlor kitchen remodel. The facilities team will be hosting an after-service coffee reception in the near future. During that coffee time, we ll have plans available to show you what the remodeled kitchen will look like. We will be open to your feedback so that this remodel will best serve all of the diverse users in the future. If you d like to be more involved prior to that time, please let us know. 5 Sarah s Recital Friday, February 3rd at 7:30pm I would like to invite all of you to my graduate choral conducting recital at the University Presbyterian Church ( th Ave NE), free admission. I will lead the UW Recital Choir and Choral Cohort Ensemble in a program entitled Magic, Mystery, and Imagination, and the concert will include a new composition of mine with text from the original Oz books! There will also be some Jewish and Christian music, folk songs, sea shanties, and more. - Sarah Riskind Weekend Food For Kids Program Interested in donating food items to Weekend Food For Kids?
