Scripture: John 16:12-15 Sermon title: God s GPS The Rev. William P. Proctor This morning the Ushers will invite you, one row at a time, to come forward for the Sacrament. The members of the Praise Team will be served first, followed by those seated in the balcony, and then those seated on the main floor and under the side balconies. During the Contemporary Worship Service the congregation will sing the following praise songs: Clap Your Hands, Let Your Spirit Rise In Me, There Is A Redeemer, Spirit Of The Living God, and Take To The World. The Praise Team will be singing Rest Upon Us, and As It Is In Heaven. Song Stories Rest Upon Us 'My friend Laura Story had the first part of this song for a couple of years, and I always thought it was so beautiful. Danielle heard it and thought it would fit wonderfully on the album, but it needed to be finished. Laura was so gracious in letting me attempt to write the remainder of her song, and I hope I didn t mess it up.

2 What always struck me about this was its simplicity. It was so bold, yet poignant. And I loved how she brought the Scriptural imagery into what is basically just a prayer, a plea, for God to become more than head knowledge, to seem real as the loving, living person that God is. I love Danielle s voice on this track, as well, and I hope the performance of the song stays true to the simple beauty and longing of the song.' - Andrew Osenga (Caedmon's Call) As It Is In Heaven By Matt Mahr "I had been raised believing in God, but music was my religion in a way. Once high school came I stopped going to church. I would pray at night before I went to bed. I had a Bible in my room and would read Genesis and Revelation, because I was fascinated with how we got here, and how we're going out, but that was all. My relationship with God was not very strong. I knew He was real, I just didn't know how much He loved me." Matt started attending church with his cousin and her friends, looking for deeper answers and friendship. This is where he witnessed a church youth group for the first time. What Matt found was something more than friends - he found Jesus Christ. While attending his new church in Arizona, Matt was approached by the youth pastor and the music director and they asked him to help out with the music. "They both saw something in me that I didn't see, and I know it was God leading me closer to Him. Within two months, I was led to accept what Christ did for me on the cross, and to respond in serving Him in my new church community." During this time, Matt restarted work on his music degree and received a scholarship from the Jazz Department at Arizona State University, where he studied Jazz Piano. After a few years, Matt was led to another community, St. Timothy Catholic Community in Mesa, Arizona, where he has been since. While being mentored by Dove Award-nominated songwriter and artist Tom Booth ("I Will Choose Christ," "Nothing Is Beyond You"), Matt met and worked with several artists along the way, including Israel Houghton, Kathy Troccoli, and Rich Mullins, whom Mahr credits with helping him land his job at St. Tim's. Matt shares, "Rich and Tom were friends, and Rich wanted to do a performance of his musical "Canticle of the Plains" at St. Tim's. Rich asked Tom to cast it. Tom called me and asked me if was interested. I said, 'Uhh, sure,' at that point having no idea who Rich Mullins was. This was a major turning point for me. I couldn't get over this guy; he was so real, yet he loved God so much, but without all the superficial piety." Matt's character, Ivory, was a piano player who made his living playing at a hotel saloon, a job Mahr knew well. He paid for his first three years of college by playing piano in a hotel in his hometown. This series of events, like many others to follow, helped deepen Matt's commitment to Christ. A few years later, another movement became more present - modern worship music. "I was in my last year of college, unsure of what to do next, when I heard the songs of Delirious and songwriters like Paul Baloche and Darrell Evans, as well as the Passion movement. This stuff blew me away. It was in those simple expressions that I realized my desire to do the same thing." Mahr took a full time position at St Tim's, and started writing songs for his church. Ten years and many songs later, Mahr is now travelling full time as a "Musical Missionary," and is still involved in local church ministry at St Timothy Catholic Community, as well as helping out with the

3 young adult ministry at All Saints Newman Center, on the campus of Arizona State University. "You have to stay rooted in community if you want to lead and write for the Church. That is where your songs come from - from your relationship with Christ, with your immediate family, and the family of believers." Besides serving with organizations like Worshiptogether.com, Spiritandsong.com, Passion, Youth Specialties, and Adore Ministries, Matt is a contributing artist for Life Teen, a high school youth movement that helped lead him to Jesus; his songs are being sung by the church around the world. A number of Matt Maher-written songs have been recorded by other artists, including: "Your Grace is Enough," a song for the church originally recorded by Maher's good friend, Chris Tomlin; "Unwavering," a reflection on the Beatitudes (recorded prior by Bethany Dillon); "For Your Glory," a new testament response to the book of Ecclesiastes (recorded by Phillips, Craig and Dean). Other songs include "As It Is In Heaven," a song based on the Lord's Prayer, originally written by Matt, now re-worked with acclaimed producer Ed Cash; and "Great Things," a look at the song of Mary, the Magnificat. "I'm always looking in for biblical songs for the church, and here you have this amazing prayer song by the first human being to accept Jesus Christ into her being; a 14-year old girl who literally carried God in her womb. Amazing." 4 Women of the Word (WOW) (Room 107) The WOW Group will begin meeting again in September. WOW is a group of dynamic women who attend various churches in and around San Angelo. They are of no certain age as any and all women are welcomed! The group meets each Tuesday at noon (excluding summer) to study the Bible or other current Christian literature. It is designed to be completed in an hour so that women working outside the home may attend during the lunch hour. You may bring your lunch. Women s In-Depth Bible Study (Room 107) The WID group will end this Thursday & will begin again in September. This group meets every Thursday (except summers) from 10:30 11:30 a.m. Women are invited to meet for probing into the Bible or other works of Christian literature. Presentation of the weekly lesson rotates among the members of the group, with lively discussion taking place. After the lesson, those who are available, join together for lunch at various locations around town. WOMEN S SUMMER BOOK CLUB The 2 of the books have been picked and the dates have been set for the Summer Book Club. We will meet at 12:00 p.m., on the following Tuesdays: June 25, July 30 and August 27. There is not a designated leader for the book club. Each person should come prepared with 3 discussion points from the book. Bring your lunch if you d like. Iced tea and water will be available. The schedule will be: June 25 Asking God Your Hardest Questions, by Lloyd Ogilvie July 30 The Fever Tree by Jennifer McVeigh Aug 27 TBA You may purchase your own books; it is not necessary to order through the church. If you do order through the church, you need to have your order turned in no later than the last Sunday of the month. It will take about 2 weeks for the order to get to the church. For June books, order no later than May 26. For July, orders should be made no later than June 30 and for August, no later than July 28.

5 ,, & ing Our church fellowship nights at the FPC Lake Lodge will start on June 3! Nearly every Monday evening throughout the summer, everyone is invited to come share a meal, swim, go out on the boat, play horseshoes, volleyball, checkers or whatever you wish to do with your family & friends. A devotional period will be mixed in the fun. We ll open the doors at 5:30 and close at 8:00. FPC is at the Wesley Daily Bread Soup Kitchen the 4th Monday of every month, with our next date will be Monday, May 27. If you would like to join this fun and enthusiastic ministry team, give Susan Gober a call at church, PROJECT DIGNIDAD Food for the month of May: They are in need of canned meats, especially chicken, canned vegetables, dry pasta, and spaghetti sauce. Please place your non-perishable items in the cart in the Commons. 6 SUMMER YOUTH EVENTS There are some awesome events scheduled to finish out the year. Please make plans for your youth to be a part of the fun. We are looking for some odd jobs or chores that they could do to earn money towards their camp balance. If you have some work that the youth could do, please consider posting it on our new Chore Board located on the first floor of the Educational Bldg. COIN COLLECTION FOR JOPLIN MISSION TRIP Help us raise money for our Rebuild Joplin Mission Trip by donating your loose change! We will have a large container set out that we are hoping we can fill up. We will be taking donations throughout the summer. Our trip is July 27 - August 3. MISSION TRIP: Another medical and construction mission trip to Guatemala is planned for the week of July

Please make every effort to be in attendance. With VBS only a few weeks away, we still need to fill some key roles. One more leader for the Pre-School Chadder s Theatre is needed. If you have not registered your children or grandchildren for VBS, please do so ASAP - you may register by calling Susan at the church office, , or on-line at: First Presbyterian Church, once again, is forming a team of volunteers to prepare and serve a meal to House of Faith campers on July 2 at Lake Brownwood! If you are interested in helping feed more than 300 hungry elementary children, please call Susan Gober, , to volunteer or for more information.
