2 We hope to have every FUMC member present in worship for this special Sunday Service, as we welcome new members, honor our saints who have passed, and renew our membership vows. Pastor Ani will resume preaching. You won't want to miss it! November 11 th November 18 th November 25 th Veterans Day Sunday During worship, we will take time to honor our veterans who have served courageously for our freedoms. This will be a great Sunday to invite family, friends or any veterans in your life. In this special worship service, we will welcome a spectacular musical guest, who will join our wonderful choir for special musical worship! "We Are Thankful" Sunday The Sunday after Home for the Holidays our feet may be sore, but our hearts are full as we celebrate the gift of our FUMC community and God's work among us. This will be a Sacred Sharing Sunday in which we will hear different voices sharing a message of gratitude, as we affirm together, "We are thankful!" Thanksgiving Sunday During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we encourage you to invite your families to join with us in worship. This will be a special Thanksgiving service with a sermon from Pastor Ani that you won't want to miss! Thanksgiving Flowers

Order forms will be available on Sunday, November 4 and 11. Complete the order form and place with payment in the offering plate or mail it to the church office. Please make checks payable to FUMC and note "Thanksgiving Flowers." Order Deadline is Sunday, November 11. Watch Pastor Ani's Sermons Been out of town or on vacation? Watch Pastor Ani's previous sermons on our YouTube channel firstumcmodesto or our Facebook feed each week. During the month of October, "Church Happens When..." sermon series was presented by the FUMC Stewardship Team. Each Sunday we looked inward at our Church body to discover our health, growing edges, strengths, and potential. Each week we dedicated ourselves to intentional spiritual reflection, both individually and corporately, as we contemplated our commitment to Christ. Here is an excerpt from "Church Happens When..." The Inner Workings of the Church.

4 The S in SPRC Where the Magic Happens! Behind every vital ministry, special event, week night and weekend activity at our church, stands the proud and productive FUMC employees. Beginning with our Pastor, each individual staff member gives 110% to their work. Together they form a powerhouse team! SPRC, the acronym for Staff Parish Relations Committee, is given the awesome responsibility to build strong relationships between the staff and the congregation and between the congregation and the district superintendent. Those who have served on this committee quickly come to appreciate the critical role that ALL of the employees play in sustaining and growing an active church such as ours. Pastor Ani sets the vision and pace for her team. She knows that the goals for our church will be realized in large part by her mighty staff. The members of the team carry out critical roles: Directing Music, Family Ministry, Youth Ministry, Pastoral Care and Tiny Tots. They play beautiful music and create the audio/visuals to enhance The Word of God for The People of God." They play important roles behind the scenes taking care of the day-to-day business of the church and all the administrative and housekeeping functions that come with running this important institution. They work hand-in-glove with the many members of the congregation who volunteer their time and talents to provide so many of our programs and ministries. We are blessed to be able to employ these individuals. When an organization faces a financial shortfall, or budget deficit, it is not unusual to look first at reducing the biggest expense line item, which in our case is salaries and compensation." This might mean withholding cost of living increases, cutting back on staff hours, eliminating positions and certainly not adding staff who may be sorely needed to turn our Church vision and goals into reality. These actions should be the last step taken to rightsize a budget. Our financial contributions to FUMC, whether as members or regular visitors, play a direct role in keeping the staff who provide the foundation for all we do today and want to do in the future. Please give prayerful consideration to increasing your giving levels. Doing so will help us take care of our most important resource the staff of First United Methodist Church.

5 It is with sincerest gratitude that First United Methodist Church thanks each and every one of you in this beautiful congregation of people for all that you do and give! Thank you for taking this journey with us through a new adventure of Stewardship. We hope we have enlightened you in new ways with regards to the missions and ministries that happen each and every day at FUMC. The Stewardship Team Will and Paula De Board, Mike Goss, Ron Kellogg, Steve Veglia, Jennifer Ward, Bobbie and Bud Young. Downtown Music Series Dr. Ryan Enright is widely recognized for his organ playing and improvisation. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Enright received both his bachelor s and master s degrees in organ performance from McGill University. He earned his DMA in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied repertoire and improvisation with William Porter. Dr. Enright has presented recitals in both Canada and the United States. He has competed internationally, and his awards include first prizes in the Canadian Music Competition (1997), Quebec Organ Competition (2004), and the National Organ Playing Competition of the Royal Canadian College Of Organists (2007). In August of 2016, Dr. Enright recorded an album entitled "St. John's Resounds" with his accomplished harpist friend Beverly Wesner-Hoehn. 12 November Salvation Army Meal Tuesday, November 27, 2018 The frost is on the pumpkin and our garden vines are looking weaker by the day! It s CHILI TIME! FUMC Salvation Army meal for November has been suggested. So the menu is planned; pots of chili, rice, cornbread, salad, desserts and drinks. All food can be delivered to the Salvation Army on Tuesday, November 27, between 4-5 p.m. Chili and rice do not need to be hot. We ll have a real convection oven chili potluck with like meats together heated or meatless if you prefer. Then there will be no pots for us to wash or return! Your hospitality shines. Can your family or group serve that night? We need about 8 servers. And if you prefer to help beforehand in the Salvation Army kitchen from 4-6 p.m., salads, chili, rice and cookies need to be organized for serving. Working together to serve others is an important beacon of our faith. Contact Judy Church, juchur2@aol.com on how you can help through donations, shopping, cooking, or serving. 15 First United Methodist Church John Wesley Society Endowment Fund Sowing Seeds of Love and Faith As the end of the year approaches, it s a good time to review your will and estate plan. There may be some tax options you might want to consider. Zero-Tax Gift and Sale If you are planning to sell an asset like securities, real estate or a business, before you sell, consider a zero-tax charitable gift and sale. By making a gift of part of the asset before the sale, you can use a tax-saving charitable deduction to significantly lower or eliminate the capital gains tax on the sale. A charitable gift to First United Methodist Endowment Fund will provide long-term funding for the health and growth of our ministry. FUMC endowment gifts are like seeds we plant in a field of dreams for the ministry of our church. These gifts keep giving year after year. Pick up your personal planner at the Info Center and include First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund in your planned giving. Contact Ron Kellogg, Endowment Chairperson, at trkellogg1046@gmail.com for more information on how to get started. *The John Wesley Society of FUMC is a chapter of the California-Nevada Annual Conference
