2 The Light of St. John s August, 2017 Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 As long as children have been tucked into beds, fear has been a topic of conversation. Do you remember when you were a child and the things that made you afraid at night? Was it...the dark? The wind? Strange creaking noises in your house? Or the last scary TV show that you watched before going to bed? Many children go to bed with a teddy bear or other stuffed animal to comfort them. I remember being a child and going to bed with a sock monkey as my parents tucked me in, cracked my bedroom door, and left the hall light on for me. Even though we aren t children anymore, we hate to admit it but we are still afraid. But are fears now are of a different sort. What s going to happen with my health? Will I be left all alone in my declining years? Will I run out of money to pay my bills? Are the best years of my life now behind me? Much of our fears are inherent, primal fears. These fears are universal and are the product of being human. When Adam and Eve committed the first sin in the Garden of Eden, fear entered the world as the first human emotion. God asked Adam, Where are you? And Adam responded, I was hiding because I was afraid. And since the fall of man, we as humans are hardwired to be fearful and to worry. It is a product of our sinfulness. We worry about many things. We worry mostly about those things that are imagined or that we cannot control. The most primal fear of all is the fear of death. This is also based in the fear of the unknown and things we cannot control. God knows that we are inclined to worry. That is why so much of God s word addresses the subject of fear. Fear not! is the most repeated command in the Bible. In fact, fear is mentioned more than 500 times throughout the Bible. Much of our response to fearful situations is a matter of focus. When Jesus invited Peter to come out of the boat and walk on water, Peter was able to walk toward Jesus as long as he focused on the Lord. But Peter began to sink when he noticed the wind and the waves. Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on his circumstances. Jesus then responded by asking Peter why he doubted. Most of our fears occur because we are doubting God s provision. Fear and doubt always go together. My favorite passage dealing with fear is Isaiah 41:10. God reminds us not to anxiously look about. We tend to do that when our circumstances are not good. But the more we look, the more anxious we become. And it is because our focus is not on God who has always been faithful toward us. When we worry, it is really a symptom that we are not fully trusting God in our circumstances. So God reminds us that he will surely help us and uphold us with his righteous right hand. Remember when you walk through the dark times of life, keep your focus on God s word. God has promised to lead us through the dark valleys. He is always faithful and will never leave us or forsake us. Stay in faith, keep your focus on him, and watch your fears fade away. Terry
