2 The Light of St. John s December, 2018 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in a manger. Luke 2:16 The holiday season is upon us. It seems to come earlier every year. Christmas decorations have been on display at WalMart since around Halloween, and one local radio station has been playing continuous Christmas holiday music since the first week of November. Many dream of a white Christmas. And I don t mean snow. I mean more white space on our December calendar. Christmas always feels like a rushed holiday. Pageants. Parties. Shopping trips. Baking days. Wrapping nights. As a result of this busyness, our calendars are filled with activities that have to be done which can crowd out the spiritual significance of the season. The hustle and bustle of the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas can easily steal our joy and replace it with nothing but a headache if we don t pause to appreciate the meaning of this season. I wonder if the participants in the original Christmas story ever envisioned that the celebration of the birth of Christ would become so hurried. But actually, hurriedness was present the night Jesus was born. But the shepherds weren t in a hurry to get to the mall to select that perfect gift. When the angel announced to the shepherds that the Christ child was born, Luke 2:16 says they hurried off to find him lying in the manger. They hurried off to worship the Lord. If I had been one of those shepherds, I would have been silent and amazed once I got there. Being around a newborn baby always makes me quiet and in awe to see new life. And being present shortly after the King of kings was born must have been the greatest awe of all. Maybe we could do the same today. In the midst of our holiday hustle and tasks, we should stop if only for a moment. On one of our busy shopping trips, we could pause and reflect on the meaning of this important season. December should be a worshipful month, not a rushed and stressed month. If we take the time to appreciate the meaning of the season, we might just discover an unhurried holiday. A season that will strengthen us spiritually instead of sapping our energy and joy. Blessings, Pastor Terry
