Attendance: John Smith, Joyce Krenek, Kelly Pampell, Bonnie Schumacher, Matt Hicks. Meeting was opened with a prayer Reading and approval of the Minutes:Motion was made by Kelly Pampellto approve the Minutes from April Motion carried Kelly Pampell Financial Secretary Bonnie Schumacher Secretary Justin Kalisek Cemetery Officer Reports: Treasurer s report for April 2014 was presented by Joyce Krenek. Motion made by Bonnie Schumacher to approve report. Motion carried Memorial report was presented by Kelly Pampell. Motion made by Joyce Krenek to approve report. Motion carried Business: Motion was made by John Smith to donate $ to the Deanville Fire Dept. for the use of their building and premises for the Germanfest. Motion carried Council discussed and approved having a church meeting for members to vote on future construction by pledges. The meeting was adjourned and closed with the Lord s Prayer. 5 THE HISTORY OF ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, DEANVILLE, TEXAS The St. John s Lutheran Church, Deanville congregation was formally organized on June 26, During the first seven years, the St. John s congregation worshipped in the Deanville school building. In 1916 a building committee was established to make plans and raise funds for its first church building. A parcel of land along the old Deanville and Caldwell road was purchased on January 2, Led by Rev. A. H. Falkenberg, the congregation was officially incorporated and chartered by the State of Texas on November 21, 1917 under the name The Evangelic Lutheran St. John Church of Deanville, Texas. The incorporators were church members: Fritz Miman, Otto Breitzkreutz, Otto Luedke, John B. Luedke, Sr., John Gerdes, Conrad Frey, Herman Brinkmann, Hugo Wiederhold, Frank Koehler, Eldie Tiemann, Christ Langengegger and William Benn. At the dedication of the new church building in 1917, John B. Luedke, Sr., and his family donated a great bell, which was hung in the narthex of the church to call the people to worship. The bell also rung to announce the death of a congregation member or to call the congregation together to respond to a disaster or emergency. When the old church was torn down in 1966, the great bell was preserved and moved to the Bell Tower of the new church, where it still serves its original purposes today. In 1949, the St. John s council negotiated to add the property east of the church. By a deed of May 26, 1950, the title to the land was transferred to St. John s, and the property of St. John s Lutheran Church was consolidated into a single piece, including the entire cemetery area. On October 18, 1964, the congregation voted to begin construction on a new church building on the land immediately to the west, at the intersection of FM 60 and the Deanville and Caldwell Road (FM 111). The contract was awarded on February 11, 1966, and ground was broken on February 20. By August, the building was ready, and the new church building was dedicated with a special worship on Sunday, August 7, The old church building was torn down to make room for a proposed parsonage. On January 18, 1981, at a congregational meeting to appoint a call committee to seek a new pastor, the congregation voted by a large majority to become an independent congregation. Until this point, 70 years, St. John s had been a two-point parish (sharing a pastor with another congregation). The years as an Independent Congregation (1981-Present) In a congregational meeting on May 17, 1981, the congregation called Rev. Harold Fehler to become the first pastor of the independent St. John s Lutheran Church of Deanville. The Fellowship Hall was constructed in the summer of A historical marker was placed at the bell tower at St. John s Deanville and dedicated on April 20, The marker was placed to recognize the congregation for its significant religious development role in the Deanville community. In July 2008, Terry Moon accepted the position as lay minister, and he still serves as pastor of the congregation. The 100th Anniversary celebration for St. John s was held Sunday, June 27, God has richly blessed the congregation of St. John s Lutheran Church of Deanville for the last 100 years. We pray that he will continue to shower his astounding, amazing grace on our congregation, giving us many more years of faithful and loving service to His people, in His holy name! 6 ELCA, Gulf Coast Synod, Lutheran, Synod Assembly May 8-10 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Mary & I attended the Synod Assembly in Baton Rouge. We drove to Baton Rouge and chose to leave the day before the Assembly started to make sure we got there in time. It is right at 400 miles from Deanville to Baton Rouge. We did just fine once we got through Houston. The hotel was right near I-10 so we didn't have to do any searching. The assembly was arranged differently this year than it had been when I went before. We attended Synod Assembly sessions from 8:00am to 12:00pm and then had the rest of the day to sight-see, etc. The assembly business that had to be approved was as follows. We had to approve a budget for next year. Elect four members to the Synod Council. There were no resolutions submitted this year. Synod Council Election member-at-large 3 years Candidate - John Rehnquist* member-at-large 3 years Candidate - Peter Waterman* member-at-large 3 years Candidate - Rev. Lura Goren* " Rev. Adriana Johnson-Rivas youth member 1 year Candidate - Dylan Murphy* " Kristien Masterstroke * indicates person elected A proposed budget of $1,390, was submitted and approved on the first ballot. These were the main items covered at the assembly this year. During our off time Mary & I went to the rural life exhibit on the LSU campus. They have a section set up like an old plantation and the exhibits were first rate. LSU has a very nice campus in Baton Rouge. During part of the rural life tour we sat and talked with two elderly Black Ladies. One said her mother & father were slaves on a Louisiana plantation and the other participated in the Alabama bus boycotts. Talking to them was very interesting. We had dinner on Saturday night with Nancy & Grant Housewright and they said to tell everyone "Hello". Mary & I thank you for the opportunity of going to the assembly. Garnett

To everyone who worked to set-up and clean-up, to those who prepped food, baked, cooked and served, to those who worked tirelessly throughout the days surrounding the event and to those who made donations to monetarily support the festival, St. John's is forever grateful for your contribution. A very special thank you is due to those in the community, nonmembers of our church, who rally in to help showcase our church and our community. This event requires alot of work but the fruit of our labor is very evident in the fellowship and pride in a job well done. Thanks to all. St. John's Lutheran Church Council Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the Sheffield Family on the loss of their loved one, Ollie Jean (Folschinsky) Sheffield) April 1, 1932 May 30, 2014 Ollie Jean (Folschinsky) Sheffield, 82, of Bryan passed away Friday, May 30, A Graveside Funeral Service was set for 11AM Tuesday, June 3 in the Voglesang Cemetery in Milam County Texas. Visitation was from 5-8PM Monday, June 2 in the Chapel of Trevino-Smith Funeral Home. Born April 1, 1932 in Ben Arnold, Texas she was the daughter of Robert and Elsie (Boeker) Folschinsky. She enjoyed antique shopping and loved her grandsons. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 51 years Melvin Sheffield; and a brother, Robert Lee Folschinsky. Ollie leaves behind to cherish her memories a son, Larry and his wife Mary An Sheffield; two grandsons, Joseph and his wife Christine Sheffield, and Jason Sheffield; two great grandchildren, Hudson and Spencer Sheffield; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends. (Jean was a former member of St. John s)

9 The 4th of July July 4th, is also referred to as Independence Day, and is celebrated as the Birthday of the United States of America. The date does not mark the end of the War for Independence, but the beginning of that war. On June 6, 1776 Richard Henry Lee, of Virginia, introduced a resolution to the Second Continental Congress stating that The United Colonies are, and of a right ought to be free and Independent States. A committee was appointed to draft a resolution to that effect. On July 4th, 1776 the properly worded resolution "The Declaration of Independence" was adopted. The following words are familiar to all, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Thus, we as a nation declared our freedom. This was a revolutionary document in an age when kings were thought to rule by divine right. It ushered in a new political era establishing equal rights for all persons and separation between church and state, in addition to freedom from British rule. The War for Independence lasted until September 3, 1783, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris by British and United States representatives. Take time to pray and thank God for the freedoms we still enjoy. STATUE OF LIBERTY For the past century, the Statue of Liberty has watched over New York harbor, welcoming millions of people to the land of the free and the home of the brave. The statue's creator, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, came from a family of Lutherans. Because of their religious views, Bartholdi's ancestors suffered Counter-Reformation mistreatment and persecution during The Thirty Years' War ( ). The family knew about immigration and resettlement; the Bartholdi's lived in Switzerland, Germany, and France. Frederic-Auguste was born in France's Alsace-Lorraine region. Members of the well-educated Bartholdi family served as Lutheran pastors in Europe for an unbroken span of 150 years. By the early 1800's, both France and the United States had experienced revolution and government overthrows. During much of Bartholdi's lifetime ( ), France was struggling under Napoleon III and the United States was coping with the aftermath of the Civil War. In those times of upheaval, both governments were looking for symbols of stability to express the meaning of their respective constitutions. Edouard de Laboulaye, designer of France's Third Republic, proposed giving the American people a large statue called Liberty Enlightening the World. He enlisted Bartholdi as the sculptor and sent him to the United States to promote the cause. When Bartholdi sailed into New York Harbor in June '1871, he spotted Liberty Island, just off Ellis Island. He envisioned a huge classical statue on Liberty Island, similar to the ancient Colossus of Rhodes. He returned to Paris to begin his work. Bartholdi first worked with a smaller design, using his Lutheran wife as the model for the body, and his mother- also descended from a family of Lutheran clergy - for the determined-looking face. Bartholdi turned to another Lutheran, Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel ( of Eiffel Tower fame), to assist with engineering the actual 151- foot - high statue. This grad statue, designed by a son of the Reformation, became the expression of spiritual and political freedom. On June 17, 1885, New Yorkers noted a French ship sailing into the harbor, and then for 18 months they watched the statue being assembled on Liberty Island. The stature was dedicated on October 28, 1886.The passing years took their toll on the statue, and she needed a complete rebuilding in The superintendent of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island National Monument Division was David L Moffitt, a member of Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church (LCA) in Manhattan. Moffitt, of German Lutheran and Scottish Protestant heritage, kept an eye on workers as they fully restored the statue for its July 4 centennial celebration. By: Rev. Dennis Kastens
