2 The Light of St. John s October, 2016 I just watched the first presidential debate last night on TV. Like many of you, I have followed the election coverage throughout the year with much interest. Next month voters will go to the polls to elect the 45 th President of the United States, and many people are afraid, apprehensive, or nervous of what will happen in this country. You can find harsh rhetoric, angry voters, and fear mongering, and this is happening on both sides of the political divide. Of course this happens during every presidential election cycle. Washington D.C. is very polarizing place, and since our country is mostly a two-party system, elections throughout the history of the United States have been pretty ugly at times. I remember several years ago when George W. Bush was running for office and one person commented that if Bush wins the election, he would just move to Canada. People have made similar comments during the past eight years about Barack Obama. And it is happening again this year. People are asking questions like: What will the country look like if the other candidate wins the election? Is our country going to be destroyed by this election? Will we be doomed if the other candidate wins? As Christians, God wants us to care about what happens in our country. Like any good citizens, we should go to the polls and vote and especially pray for our elected leaders. However, we should never be so caught up in the results of who will be elected that we become fearful if our candidate does not win the election. When your emotions, your loyalty, and your faith in the future are wrapped up in any one political party or candidate, then you are going to be worried much of the time. So let me suggest an alternative. Christians have a different view of this world. The followers of Jesus believe this world is not our home. This world is not where our future is. While we care about what happens in our world, it is not the focus of our hope. As a Christian, your citizenship is first and foremost to the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, we do not count on the powers of this world to offer us hope. Our hope is in Jesus Christ, not on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, or a third party candidate. After all, no matter who wins the election, the sun will still rise the next day. Nations rise and fall. The United States is only 240 years old. But God's Kingdom is forever. It will not fall. It has outlasted all the governments and kingdoms of this world. Someone bigger than any political party or system is in charge. And He will be in charge forever, and that is the source of our hope. Blessings, Pastor Terry
