1 Crusader Bulletin THE ATONEMENT ACADEMY November 13, 2012 King s Fair Is Coming: This Weekend! Our annual school festival promises to be a day of fun-filled medieval frolic for Atonement families and friends! Cake decorating competitions, costume competitions, and food booths as well as game booths make it a day of fun for the entire family. The day begins with Mass at 10 am, followed by a parade at 11 am. The lower school classes are working on their class banners and they will parade in full costume or just festive hats with their comfortable clothing with their class heraldry followed by the people of the village. For lunch, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, roasted corn, and the everpopular Filipino noodles will be complemented by cold drinks, beer, and desserts. The Knights of the Guild return this year with a horse show in the afternoon. Decorated cake competitions and booths with games of skill and chance will make for an afternoon of fun for all ages. 2 A Message from Deacon Orr Dear Parents: Back from our Fall Break and well into our second quarter, the students of The Atonement Academy are doing well, overall. Some Upper Scholars competed in the All- Region Choir, many Lower School CYO teams are doing exceptionally well, winning Zone titles and competing in City-wide competitions, and everyone is looking forward to the King s Fair at the end of the week. We look forward to seeing the Lower and Middle Scholars in their costumes and enjoying the day s events, such as the King s Parade and horse show. Please get those raffle tickets sold and turned in! The parish of Our Lady of the Atonement began a Capital Campaign on Oct. 28, with a goal of raising another $650,000 towards the expansion. Last year, the parish put aside $300,000 for the second year in a row, for our expansion. Parents of the Academy are welcome and encouraged to participate in this Campaign. The sooner we have 3 million dollars in hand, the sooner we will be going to the Archdiocesan Debt Review Committee for permission to begin construction. To date, we have about 2.4 million in cash on hand. Bureaucratic hold-ups are delaying the construction of our restroom facility adjacent to the athletic field. We are hopeful it won t be too much longer. I wish to commend and thank the teachers and students of the academy for performing so well during the Accreditation Team s visit in early October. The members of the commission gave us outstanding marks in the preliminary report and there is no doubt that we will receive an affirmative letter from the TCCED in early December, again naming us an accredited school through The team members were most impressed with the comportment of our students, especially at Mass. When giving her report to us, the associate superintendent of the Ft. Worth Catholic Schools said I thought my schools were excellent. Apparently, we excelled. Thanks to the parents, members of the School Council and the officers of the PTC for helping with many details of the visit. I look forward to seeing many of you at the King s Fair on Saturday. 4 CITY CHAMPS: Little Crusaders Soccer Team! On Monday evening, November 12, our Little Crusaders (Grades 1 & 2) won the City Championship! Pictured above are the children and their families and coaches. They are the 2012 Tiny Tot City Champs! We are very proud of you and your hard work! All-Saints Day and Grandparents Day Presentations Congratulations, Crusader Flag Football Grades 3 &4 This year, the lower school of The Atonement Academy presented an All Saints Day program for parents and grandparents. 5 ATONEMENT CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WRAPS UP A SUCCESSFUL YEAR The cross country season is wrapped up with the T-CAL State Cross Country Meet, and senior Crusader Annie Kennedy took home first place in the 3A meet with a time of 12 minutes and 15 seconds. Sophomore Bridget Kennedy took home second place with a time of 12 minutes and 18 seconds. Another sophomore, Shannon Murray, placed 15th in the event. Please congratulate these girls along with their coach, Mrs. Tricia Crossey. (The group is pictured at left.) X-TEAM Junhwan Lee, Amy- Grace Weems, Bridget Kennedy, Shannon Murray, Anne Kennedy, Sebastian Barrera, and Donghyun Seo. MEET OUR TEACHERS: Kristie Weems Mrs. Kristie Weems is one of our 2 nd grade teachers. This is her fifth year of teaching at The Atonement Academy after being a stay-at-home mom for 17 years. Prior to this, she taught for six years in Austin, TX. She loves teaching 2 nd grade, and says that, By the time I was in 2 nd grade I knew I was called to be a teacher. I would watch my teachers as I was growing up, and note which teaching methods I should use. She is married to John and has 6 children as well as one surrogate son and one adorable grandson. She enjoys reading, power -walking, hiking, and cheering for the football teams of Notre Dame (Go Fighting Irish) and UT (Hook Em Horns). She was born in California but has lived in Texas for over 30 years. Mrs. Weems is a graduate of UT Austin where she earned a degree in Elementary Education with a Math Specialization. Her children have been attending The Atonement Academy for 11 years, and with several graduated, there are now the three youngest Weems daughters at The Atonement. I thank God for all the blessings He has given my family and me. I couldn t ask for a better place to work, a better parish to be a part of, or a better place for my children to attend school.

6 King s Fair is THIS SATURDAY and We Need Your Help! Our annual King s Fair will be held on November 17, The King s Fair is one of our two major fundraisers at the Atonement Academy, and we need your help! Raffle Prize Underwriting WAYS YOU CAN STILL HELP The King s Fair Committee has been analyzing ways to maximize out income and minimize our expenses. We realized that our major expense for the event is the $5,000 raffle prize. We have to deduct $5,000 from our raffle ticket proceeds or other proceeds from the Fair just to pay for the raffle prize. We are asking for your help in trying to reduce this major expense. Please consider donating $250 or $500 to offset this expense. In return, we will publicly thank your family and/or your company for your generosity with signs at King s Fair. You will also be given raffle tickets for the King s Fair drawing (5 tickets for $250, 10 for $500), and those tickets will be credited to your child s classroom. Glitz and Glamour on the Silver Screen Excitement is filling the air as preparations are being made for the annual Gala. This year s theme is Glitz and Glamour on the Silver Screen.

Several options are available for attendance. Individual tickets may be purchased for $100. Table packages range from $1,500 to $3,000. Tables purchased by February 1 st will have the opportunity to choose, with school approval, their table theme. There are only twenty tables available, so act early! Mrs. Reilly has generously offered to help decorate the first Oscar Winner Level table purchased with a Willie Wonka theme that includes an edible chocolate spiraled centerpiece! While not exactly Silver Screen, it sounds yummy!
