Many thanks to the PTC for their efforts in putting together another successful event for our school, and to the many volunteers who devoted their time and talent. This Saturday, April 21, is the Junior/Senior Prom. We congratulate our juniors and seniors for reaching this momentous occasion in their Upper School journey and express our wishes for a joyous evening. I would also like to congratulate all of our students who received their first Holy Communion and Confirmation with Bishop Lopes last Sunday, and thank their teachers and parents for the many months of instruction preparing the children for these sacraments. May you continue to rejoice in the blessings of this Easter season. Thank you, Mr. John Markovetz Red Robin Road San Antonio TX Marketing@AtonementOnline.com
CATHOLIC EDUCATION AT THE ATONEMENT ACADEMY First Holy Communion & Confirmation 2018 We would like to offer a special thank you to Bishop Lopes for coming to our parish and administering the sacraments. A special thank you also goes out to Mrs. Weems, Mrs. Kennedy, & Mr. Zuberbueler for their help in running a very successful First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Their dedication and hard work really made the event a special one for everyone involved. Nota Bene / Note Well: 12TH GRADE PARENTS: Please send baby pictures of your senior to Erica Lizama in the front office. We will need them for the 2018 yearbook and graduation. We hope you have a restful holiday with your family.
Atonement Athletics Sports.Org Coaches Corners The Atonement High School Tennis Team played in their State Tennis Tournament. Everyone played extremely well, the player that stood out this tournament was Anna Stallard. Anna made it to the semifinals of the girls singles draw. Anna fell short and took home 2nd place. Senior Paula Domit played her last match with the Atonement Tennis team. We would like to wish her the best as she begins her new chapter in her life after she leaves the Atonement Academy to start college. I would like to congratulate all of our High school tennis team for a great season. Up next is our middle school tennis team as they look to complete their season this Saturday in their middle school tournament. Head Tennis Coach, Victor Martinez Last Wednesday's victory over our district rival Winston School was a huge improvement over the past few games. We got solid pitching and an offensive explosion that led our Crusaders to a 20 7 win. Everybody worked the count, saw the baseball and hit well. Great overall team achievement due to, good defense and offense. Head Baseball Coach, Estevan Vasquez Upcoming Games Wed. Apr. 18 MS Girls Softball (4:30pm) (Away) Thur. 4 Featured Teacher of the Week Miss Laura Oliveros Middle School Teacher I first came to The Atonement Academy in 2003 as a 6th grade student. Little did I know just how much of an impact this change of schools would have on my life! I was a proud member of the graduating class of 2010, and just four years later returned to the school as a 2nd grade teacher. After two years in lower school, I jumped up to middle school where I now teach the majority of the religion courses. I am currently working on a Masters in Catechetics and Evangelization from Franciscan University with the hopes of better reaching my students and helping them grow in their love and understanding of the Faith. In between lesson planning and paper writing, I love reading, singing, and - as all my students will tell you - drinking coffee! I also love spending time with my family, and I am fortunate enough to have two of my three siblings living in town, as well as my parents. Though some of my family is out of town - the majority, actually, overseas in Spain - I feel so very blessed to be a part of the Atonement family, one that has enveloped me not by necessity, but by choice. I love the people, I love my job, and I love my students! I pray that God continues to use me in this community to hopefully give others the same warmth and belonging I myself have found here. Middle School Corner Subject: Grade: Teacher: Music 6th & 7th Grade Girls Miss Rebecca Vera Preparing for the Spring Concert The Intermediate Girls Choir came back from Easter break with fervor to prepare for the upcoming Spring Concert. This week, they focused on one of their favorite pieces, Chili Caliente, by David Giardiniere. The piece is challenging the girls to strengthen their rhythmic skills with its syncopated rhythms and fast tempo. The girls will also be implementing the use of percussion instruments such as maracas, claves and bongos. They have been working exceptionally hard and growing tremendously in their musical abilities. We look forward to a fantastic performance May 16 th at their Spring Concert!
Lower School Corner Subject: Handwriting Grade: 2nd Grade Teacher: Mrs. Maria Kennedy Formal Handwriting Formal handwriting instruction is an essential component of a child s early education. Research over the years has proven that writing by hand engages the brain in learning and reinforces reading and writing development. The Academy s classic approach to handwriting includes formal instruction using Writing Our Catholic Faith as the primary tool. Our second grade students began cursive handwriting instruction in early October. We just finished learning all of the lowercase letters and now we re tackling the uppercase letters! You can be sure that our second graders are very excited to be writing cursive across the curriculum! Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church Parish Life Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament We are fortunate to have this opportunity at Our Lady of the Atonement in the Sacred Heart Chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed every weekend beginning each Friday at 7:30am and ending on Sunday at 7:15am. Please prayerfully consider committing to spend one hour each week to be with Our Lord in adoration.
Upper School Corner Subject: Grade: Teacher: English IV 12th Grade Miss Annie Salinas High School Literature Our seniors are completing their high school literature career with a study of C.S. Lewis's writings. After finishing The Screwtape Letters, we are now reading Lewis's last work, Till We Have Faces. Till We Have Faces is a retelling of the Roman myth of Cupid and Psyche, and is a deeply convicting story that deals with familial love, trust, jealousy, sacrifice, atonement, conversion, and heaven. Concurrently, we are discussing the nature of the soul as understood in Platonism and Stoicism, two ancient philosophies present in the story. We are also listening to recordings of C.S. Lewis reading excerpts from his book The Four Loves, and studying the ways that storge (affection), philia (friendship), eros (romantic love), and agape (sacrificial love) are present both in Till We Have Faces and in our daily lives. For understanding this, the knowledge the seniors have gained in their Moral Theology class is key - it is a gift to watch the seeds of knowledge sprouting and blooming as we read. Lewis is an extremely appropriate writer for the curriculum in an Ordinariate school such as our own; though a lifelong Anglican, many of his acquaintances were Catholic converts and his theological circle frequently bridged the gap. His writings are of special import to me, as I wrote my undergraduate thesis on them several years ago. This particular book we are reading is my personal favorite, and it is an absolute delight to be able to share it with the seniors. Lewis's writings have strengthened the faith of many at this parish, and continue to do so while we read them in English class.
