1 LION S ROAR St. Mark Lutheran School October 22, 2015 Mission of St. Mark Lutheran School The mission of St. Mark Lutheran School is to assist parents, both in the congregation and community, in providing their children a Christcentered education, preparing them for life with the Savior here on earth and eternally in heaven. Many things have been improved, and we are still working on doing more. The latest update is that we now have an emergency evacuation plan in place with student transit. This means that if students would ever need to be evacuated from the school building, student transit would come and pick up the students and bring them safely to a pickup location for parents. God willing, we will never need this service from student transit, but in the event on an emergency, we would communicate where to pick up students via and text reminders. If you have questions, please direct them to Mr. Micheel or Mr. G. See you at the Fall Festival tomorrow night! Upcoming Week at St. Mark. 3 Opening Thought As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. (Psalm 103:13) During the 1980 s Holly Dunn, a country music singer, wrote and performed a song titled Daddy s Hands. The words carry a touching message. The singer as an adult looks back on her childhood and remembers her Daddy s Hands. While things might not have seemed clear to her as she grew up, as an adult she realizes how much love was in her Daddy s Hands. Her dad s hands were physically rough from all the manual labor he performed in order to provide for his family. His hands were firm when she was naughty and needed correction. His hands were tender when she experienced disappointment or needed an adult for comfort. Yes, There was always love in Daddy s hands. King David paints a similar picture. The LORD has compassion on those who fear him. Is it not a beautiful thought to know how loving and comforting and compassionate our LORD is? In fact, Psalm 103 is filled with examples that reflect this thought. He forgives all my sins (v. 3), The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love (v. 8), He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities (v. 10) are only a few examples recorded by the Psalm writer, David. David was certainly reminded of this in his life. He was guilty of adultery, murder, deception, and poor parenting. Yet he clung to God s gracious promises. He trusted that one day, the LORD would send a Savior. So we too, as parents cling to the hope God offers us in his Word. We trust that God forgives all our sins. This message is at the center of our mission at St. Mark. Thank you for trusting your children to our care. May we as teachers and parents continue to work together to teach our children of our compassionate Lord. FRIDAY CHAPEL / MISSION OFFERING FIRST QUARTER Please note that each Friday will include our weekly Chapel service at 8:50 AM in the sanctuary. We also collect a weekly mission offering at this service. This note is sent to remind you that your child's offerings are greatly needed. This quarter our offerings will support Michigan Lutheran Seminary. 10/16/15: $47.23 QTD: $ Mission Offerings Do our school s mission offerings make a difference? Consider this thank you note written from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, a mission offering beneficiary last year. Dear Christian Friends at St. Mark, There is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved! In making this astonishing claim, Peter boldly announces the Church s global mission. There are certainly many names of the many different gods that are worshipped in many different lands. But among them, only one saving name can be found. That s why we intend to make the name of Jesus great in the entire world. On this campus (Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary) we have the privilege of being able to carry out this mission in many different ways. Our chief task is to train men to go out and proclaim the Name as pastors. This past May, 32 men were sent out to serve not only in the United States but throughout the world. Two were graduates of our Pastoral Studies Institute program. During the summer, called workers from inside and outside the United States participated in our continuing education programs both on campus and through distance learning. Professors from the Seminary also have the joy of sharing the name of Jesus in our world mission seminaries. As fellow bearers of the name, you share with us in this task. By your recent gift to the Seminary, you were giving praise to Christ for his saving grace to you. You were also giving us a powerful help and encouragement to continue what we are doing. We thank God for you and for your partnership with us in this global gospel mission! In His Name, Paul O. Wendland, President

4 This month in Preschool we have been exploring our five senses. Stop in our classroom to see our 5 Senses Science Project next week at the Science Fair! We took a field trip to Bushel and a Peck orchard last week and are looking forward to having our parents join us for a classroom fall fun party next week. We continue working on our writing and cutting and have taken time for some creative fall projects as well. It's hard to believe we are already nearing the end of the first quarter! Kindergarteners have been learning about oceans this week in preparation for the Science Fair. Come and check out our ocean projects and interesting facts we have learned! We are doing for our 1st quarter assessments. It is amazing how much they have learned in a couple months! Watch for new sight words coming home soon! Reading is the name of the game in first grade and we are doing lots of it these days! We have been practicing our word cards and have done several levels (colors) of them. Each time that a student says their words or reads a book they get another sticker for their chart. We have filled our first chart, received a treat, and are working on our second chart now. The children also have the opportunity to read books and receive a personal pan pizza from the Pizza Hut Book-it program, as well as a coupon for Firedup Pizza. We strive to make reading fun and delicious for them!! We are also busy and excited to be working on our Science projects for next week. We are learning many new things about different types of animals. Tuesday we will share our projects with parents and students. Music has been another fun activity for us. We have sung in Sunday worship services twice already and we sang a couple of fun songs for the children and parents at power hour this week. We enjoy having Moms come and help with lunch time and they read to us and play hang-man which is a big hit! Our Bible lessons about Jacob and Joseph are interesting and teach us about families working together and keeping their faith strong and focused. We have learned many memory treasures already and have them stored in our heads and hearts. We love these wonderful fall days and playing outside. Of course RECESS is still the most important thing that we do at school! Blessings to all of our families. DONATIONS OF CANDY ARE STILL NEEDED FOR TRUNK OR TREAT!

5 2nd Grade The second graders are reading stories about pets in reading class. We read Arthur's Pet Business and Julius. Our class has been getting ready for the upcoming science fair! Please plan to come to our classroom Tuesday October 27th at 6pm. 3rd Grade The third graders are reading Magic Tree House: Buffalo Before Breakfast. We will be reading this chapter book as a class. The first week of November each student will choose their own Magic Tree House chapter book to read and do a book report. 5th and 6th Grade News Things are wrapping up in many of the classes with the end of the quarter next week. The class that you probably have heard the most about is Science class and the "house." Students have been working on wiring a house with at least 4 circuits for the last week and a half. You can see their works of art on Tuesday night with their Science fair. Reminder, that the science fair projects should be brought in on Tuesday, we will set them up in the afternoon and have students do a mock presentation to the younger students Tuesday afternoon. We are also wrapping up our novel, The One and Only Ivan. The students have enjoyed this book. We are also wrapping up our study of the 1st article. Both of these classes will have tests next week. 7th-8th Grade News The students in 7th-8th grade are currently reading their second book, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Some students certainly recognize the talent of the children s author, Avi. The main character, Charlotte Doyle, is used to the elegant lifestyle of living in an upper class home in England and attending private dame schools which teach growing girls proper etiquette. When she boards a trader ship with a disheveled group of sailors and a dictator of a captain, things certainly get quite interesting. Ask the students to share a thought or two of their impressions of the book thus far. Basketball Information will be coming out today or tomorrow at the latest. This will include updated schedules, practice schedules, and concession schedule for November and December.
