FROM OUR CLASSROOMS from Mrs. Garant: Middle School students are busily going back into grammar, viewing vocabulary, and will soon be practicing their poetry. The AP Literature students are refreshing their research skills and remembering that research always takes longer than we think it will. The bravest of the brave British Literature students have chosen to share their short poems with the readers of the Times. The School Skirt by Megan Winfrey Always clean and nicely pleated, Its length down to the middle of the knee. To go to school, it's really needed; If you don't have it, everyone will see. A Riddle by Carla Villarreal Elegantly bound, binding pages of stories; Brown or blue, I have many titles but only one name. I am simple, I am unique, I am advanced, I am what I am. Full am I, words of wisdom, love, past or present. Open me up just to see me bound elegantly, But take care of me, unless I fall apart in time. Answer: a Bible Our Riddle by Elizabeth Surovic I'm silly and make you sneeze, And I'm constantly floating on the breeze. My cousins are constantly coming. I fly far, far away through the day. I scatter and chatter softly to caterpillars. My home is a plant that blooms and spreads. We grow and grow and wait for the next breeze. What am I? Answer: Pollen A Riddle by Mary Campbell Yearbook WE STILL NEED PHOTOS! The yearbook staff has almost finished their work! Now is the time to get your sons and daughters in the yearbook drop off a CD or flashdrive with your photos, or you can send a few at a time to info@atonementonline.com. The sun blazing down, And the sword flies around. I stay and hope to remain. I cover and protect, drenched In sweat, the mind of the man. I am always there, the threat Great when I am not. I shine In the sunshine and glitter In the moonlight. I sit and protect The mind of the man. What am I? Answer: The Crusader Helmet

5 The Atonement Academy 7 th and 8 th Grade Trip to Washington, D.C. The itinerary and prospective sites are still in development, but may include: The U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court Building. The U.S. Capitol The museums of the Smithsonian Institution including the original Castle building, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History, and the National Air and Space Museum. The National Gallery of Art. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the sweeping view from its rooftop deck. The Lincoln Memorial, Tidal Basin, Jefferson Memorial and other nearby monuments. Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknowns, and Arlington House, the ancestral home of Robert E. Lee. The National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, one of the ten largest church buildings in the world. The Lincoln Memorial St. Matthew s Cathedral, a magnificent Romanesque basilica that is the cathedral church of the Washington Archdiocese. Beyond the boundaries of the national capital, we may visit lesser known but historically important sites including: Baltimore, seat of the first diocese in the United States. We will visit the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption of the BVM. This magnificent building, the first metropolitan cathedral in our country, was designed by Benjamin Latrobe in close collaboration with America s first Bishop, John Carroll. It remained the cathedral of Baltimore until the 1950s, and was restored to a high standard for its 200 th anniversary in Tomb of the Unknowns Annapolis. We will walk the streets of this beautiful 17th century English colonial port city which was, for a time, the seat of government of the United States under the Articles of Confederation. Annapolis is also the home of the U.S. Naval Academy and the 18 th century State House, the oldest state capitol. Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall, and the Pohick Church. Mount Vernon, on the banks of the Potomac River, was the home of George Washington, nearby Gunston Hall was the home of George Mason, perhaps the most underappreciated of the founding fathers. Mason was the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the precursor to the Declaration of Independence. Virginia was a royal colony where the Church of England was the established religion. The Pohick Church was the first church in Northern Virginia, and was the principal church in the Truro Diocese. George Washington, George Mason and George William Fairfax all served as vestrymen. Old Town Alexandria. Another 17 th century English colonial city, Alexandria predates by 200 years the founding of the nearby national capital of Washington, D.C., which was not created until the Federal period. Many colonial era buildings remain intact. We will visit and perhaps have Mass at Old Saint Mary s, the oldest Catholic church in Virginia, dating from the 18 th century. The Vietnam Memorial
