Our Vision: We Worship. We Disciple. We Serve. September 22, 2017 New Sound and Video System For several months the Music Committee has worked with the Music Staff, and a special subcommittee composed of Bob Crute, Jonathan Martin, Sean Bilby, and Jim Goben (prior to him moving to CA) to evaluate and study the sound, audio, and recording of the church. For well over a year we have reviewed our system to figure out how to get to the next level and at the same time correct issues that have plagued us for some time. We decided to look at the whole process from top to bottom. We brought in a professional vendor to evaluate our system and issues. To be brief we determined we had several issues - from not enough microphones to pick up the choirs and plays that we have at Christmas and Easter, to cable connections that were broken, speakers that were not working properly or adjusted correctly, or were not in the best positions. We determined to move forward with a digital system to give us better control and provide more quality sound, video, and recording. The recording station lacked space and organization, and we needed to upgrade so we could be set for the next 10 to 15 years. We decided to add unobtrusive video recording in the Sanctuary for recording the services. Now shut-ins will be able to watch, not just listen to the worship services. The equipment is remote and can be controlled by the audio/video technician in the recording booth. We also have added special effective lighting for special services such as the Last Supper, Christmas, and Easter cantatas. We are upgrading the speakers under the balcony for better sound and upgrading the two speakers to the left and right of the pulpit. Bodypack microphones are being purchased for children s plays as are additional boom mics so the sound quality will be better for everyone. Additional microphones are being hung above the choir loft so we can better hear and record the choir. The recording equipment given in memory of Mrs. Aston by her family well be utilized and function very well with the additional digital equipment. In addition to the Sanctuary upgrade, we also have upgraded the Fellowship Hall with an up-todate sound board, projector, and screen for presentations and movies for the children. The speakers were adjusted and now you will be able to hear speakers and vocals from the stage all the way back to the kitchen without issue. As you recall, Talmadge Darden dedicated years to our music program here at Suffolk Christian Church and his dream was to one day have the system to carry us into the next level as well as video the services. Therefore the Music Staff and Music Committee is dedicating this upgrade in his memory. We will place a plaque in the Sanctuary and in the Fellowship Hall dedicating these renovations in his memory. Respectfully Submitted Tom Ashcraft Music Committee Chairman

2 My Dear Friends, Soon you should be receiving an invitation to a neighborhood gathering which we are calling a congregational growth" gathering. These home meetings will be a time of prayer as we ask God to re-kindle the Holy Spirit among us. Tradition still lives at Suffolk Christian Church! We have been located in the heart of downtown Suffolk for almost 157 years. We like to think that we are a "beacon of hope" as we grow in our Christian faith together. Please make every effort to join this time of spiritual tune-up as we look to our future ministry together. On a personal note, Carmen and I have been overwhelmed by the love and support you, our dear church family, have given us during this time of loss and grief. We are honored and blessed to be a part of this good church family, very enthusiastic as we continue to serve God alongside you. May God s grace, God s love, and God s forgiveness always be yours. Love, Michael Members, Pastor s Column Rev. Michael D. Halley Pastor There will never be enough thanks for your prayers and love for my mother over the past few years. God s light did shine thru you and she loved you very much! Thank you for expressing God s love thru the beautiful service, music and reception. You blessed me and the family. May God shine His face on you and Bless you daily! May God return to you the kindness you have shown to me. Thank You, Barbara Ramsey Morris and Family You may see a new face around the church. Aaron Whidbee, from Suffolk Sanitary Supply, will be taking over cleaning responsibilities from the Sextons. As many of you know, Sarah Burford, recently announced her retirement after over 14 years of dedicated service to the church. The House of Worship Committee made a difficult decision to transition cleaning services to a private contractor to lighten the burden on the church staff. John Durham has also provided wonderful support as a Sexton and alternate Security Attendant. He also helped out the Food Pantry and other ministries around the church. The Committee would like to thank both Sarah and John for their outstanding support over the years. - House of Worship Committee Circle News The Afternoon Circle will meet on Monday, October 2 at 1 pm in the Saints Alive Center. They will have as their speaker, Sue Woodward. She will talk on the History of the Peanut in Suffolk/ Nansemond with a clip of interviews from farmers. 5 Young at Heart Day Trip Carter Mountain Orchard Monday, October 16 th Leaving 8am Our first stop will be The Cheese Shop in Stuarts Draft, VA The Cheese Shop started on the back porch of the Hershberger family in the early 1960 s. Mr. Hershberger s desire to share the quality cheeses produced in his home State of Ohio with the residents of Stuarts Draft inspired him to begin selling them on his back porch. In the early 1980 s the Beiler family purchased The Cheese Shop and expanded the bulk foods selection, moving the store into the basement of his home. The present store was built in the early 1990 s and allowed The Cheese Shop to offer sliced cheeses and deli meats. Today, our customers walk from their homes nearby or visit us from as far away as California and Europe. The helpful staff at The Cheese Shop is happy to answer customers cooking and baking questions, even if it means searching the internet while the customer continues shopping. Many of our spices are priced less than half of those found in the supermarket. Our high quality and unique cheeses are also offered at bargain prices when compared with most other stores. Our customers enjoy the unique snack selection, gluten free products, jams and jellies, old-fashioned candies, and hard-to-find baking ingredients. We offer bargain-priced quick and old-fashioned oatmeal as well as many other grains, organic rice, and much more. Next Stop will be The Wood Grill in Charlottesville, VA Each day, they prepare homemade casseroles, garden fresh fruits and salads, country style vegetables, fresh baked bread, and dessert selections to please everyone. You ll also find more highquality meat choices than any other buffet around. Their slow-cooked pot roast, smoked BBQ and ribs, and famous hand-tossed fried chicken, along with our homemade mashed potatoes and countless other vegetable choices put us in a class of our own! Next we will travel to Carter Mountain Orchard We ll enjoy a fall crisp Carter Mountain Orchard. You can pick your own apples or buy already picked apples. Price: $50.00 for transportation.
