2 My Dear Friends, As the months roll along...faster and faster, it seems!...i keep reflecting back on our years together and what a blessing you have been to Carmen and me. Pastor s Corner A local pastor asked me a few months ago, What is the secret of a long pastorate? Well, I had nev- Rev. Michael D. Halley er thought about that, so I took a few moments to gather my thoughts. All I could think to tell him was, I get up each morning and go to work! And it seems like only a little while ago that I came to Suffolk to interview with our Board of Deacons. I cherish these memories! But we are far from finished! So much more lies ahead! There are many challenges we face! Where shall we start? Remember what the Rev. Jim Cymbala said? He said, when you don t know what to do or where to start, pray. So, I ask you to pray. What for? For wisdom. For guidance. For discernment. For courage. For creative thinking. For boldness. For humility. For energy. For love and true compassion for each other and for those beyond our doors. Please pray with me! May God bless you and may God bless the body of Christ known as Suffolk Christian Church. Love, Michael Remembering... Remembering the past 32 years at Suffolk Christian Church takes some work.. at least for me. I have been attending for about 45 years, and much has happened in those years. As a child, our world revolves around a pretty small sphere of people.. and one of the people in my circle was Margaret Saunders. She was a Sunday School teacher when I was young some time around 10 or 12. I remember her lessons and the conversations we had in that room sitting on those little, wooden chairs. She was calm and had a way of teaching us that helped us understand the lessons of the Bible. She was not the church secretary at that time, but since I had little reason to go into the office as a child or a teen, my memories of Jane Traylor are somewhat fuzzy. However, Margaret has been the church secretary since I was 21, so my memories of her are the most vivid. She has been THE constant around Suffolk Christian Church throughout all the comings and goings, new members, new ministers, births, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. She has been there.. As we sat during one of her last days in the office, she spoke of memories.. of helping people with food when they came hungry to the door, or praying with strangers as they came looking for comfort.. a listening ear.. a hand to hold.. She spoke of members that came in to sit and chat and tell of news, accomplishments, or loss.. She spoke of the love she had for her fellow staffers and how they would be missed in her daily life. And she spoke of time that would now be spent making memories with family.. Yes She is looking forward to this new direction in her life, but we find ourselves on a new path as well as we search for a new church secretary. It will be hard to find a person such as Margaret who, in many ways was the calm, steady beating heart of Suffolk Christian Church.. like your mom or maybe a sister.. loving and caring.. No.. We will not find a carbon-copy of Margaret to fill the position that would be impossible.. but we will move forward just the same.. And Margaret may be that member who comes in to sit and chat and tell us of her news Stephanie Remy, Sam 2018 Board of Deacons Chair Prayer Concerns Lynne Garner... O make us all acceptable to be partakers of the inheritance of your saints in light. Amen. A prayer of John Wesley ( ), English cleric and one of the founders of Methodism

3 FOOD PANTRY NEWS We at Suffolk Christian Church are blessed with much, and we are honored to be able to give out of our abundance to the least of these, our neighbors who may be hungry from time to time. This past week, the need of the regular, working man, like you or me was highlighted as a teacher, new to the area, was in need of food for his family. He was starting a new job and was between paychecks and he would not receive any pay until September. He was not wearing tattered clothes.. he was not in need of a bath.. he was well -educated and he was simply having a cash-flow problem.. How many of us have ever been in a position of needing a bit of cash to tide us over? How many of us had someone like family to give us that little bit necessary to pay bills when we were between jobs. Please know that the recipients of our food distribution are very thankful for whatever we give.. for whatever YOU give! THANK YOU!! Please continue to bring donations and plastic grocery bags, not newspaper bags, vegetable bags or large shopping bags. Thank you! CARE AND CONCERN COMMITTEE The second of only two meetings held each year of the Care and Concern Committee will be held on Tuesday, September 18 th at 7:00 p.m. in Saints Alive. With our new reorganizational meeting held in September, 2017, the Committee has been doing very well. But as always, we can use additional help. There is always a place for new members whether it s with the Card Ministry, the Call Ministry, the Funeral Receptions, wherever you feel led to help, we would love to have you. We invite you to attend this meeting to learn about this Committee and all the wonderful things it does. Please feel free to call Elaine Abernathy at or Claudia Salmon at for additional information or with any questions you may have. Thank you and hope to see you on September 18 th! Elaine Abernathy and Claudia Salmon Co-Facilitators - Care and Concern Notes of Appreciation Dear Board of Deacons, Churchwide Fellowship, Church Staff and Church Family, My heart was so full of emotion and gratitude when you honored me on Sunday, August 5th with that wonderful retirement celebration, covered side lunch, beautiful jewelry and plaque. Thank you so much for loving me and giving me the opportunity to serve this great church for 32 years as church secretary. I have so many wonderful memories of our time together. I will miss being at the church every day working side by side with my co-workers, our wonderful pastor, and the people who make up this wonderful congregation. I will miss your phone calls, text messages, s and your visits to the church office during the week. You became not just my friends, but my family, as we shared together many things through the years. I will miss that closeness very much. Thank you, also, for the many beautiful retirement cards, gifts and flowers. I so appreciated all the sweet words of encouragement as I embark on this new chapter of my life called retirement. Dear Members of Suffolk Christian Church, My husband and I appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much, Kathleen Wilson ~~~~~~~ Dear Suffolk Christian Church Family and the Care and Concern Committee, Mike and I are so grateful for the cards, visits, calls and donations from each of you after the November 29, 2017 deacth of our daughter, Mary Donnan Debranski. Reverend Halley was especially supportive and comforting during such a difficult time. Thank you, too, to the Care and Concern Committee s Elaine Abernathy and her wonderful dinner which she brought to us. Mike and Marty Beamon Debranski Monday, September 17 Thank you so much for everything. I treasure each of your friendships and I love you all.
