3 He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. Sept. 8-9, 2018 Gospel Reading Mark 7:31-37 Jesus restores a man s hearing and speech. Background on the Gospel Reading Today we continue to hear the Gospel of Mark proclaimed. In today s reading, Jesus heals a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. This is a story about Jesus healing power, and in it we find clues about our understanding of sacrament. We are struck by the physical means used to heal the man, the use of spittle and touch. The Church continues to celebrate the sacraments using physical means. In the Sacrament of Baptism, water and oil are used to show the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, we are anointed with holy oil on the forehead and the hands. In the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We are a sacramental people who believe that God s grace is given to us through these physical signs. Some, however, see in this Gospel an image of the proclamation of the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles. The geographic references tell us that Jesus is journeying through Gentile territory. Jesus had previously visited this region and healed a person possessed by a demon. Jesus was already famous there, which explains why people brought the deaf man to him. The story that precedes this reading in Mark s Gospel sets the stage. Jesus encounters a Gentile, a Syrophoenician woman who asks him to heal her demonpossessed daughter. Jesus engages her in a dialogue about not feeding to dogs the food intended for children. Jesus is struck by the woman s great faith when she replies that even dogs eat the food that falls from the table, and he heals her daughter immediately. The faith of this Greek woman compels Jesus to respond to her plea. Mark shows that Jesus own mission affirms the early Church s mission to the Gentiles. This was a significant issue to the early Christian community, which found that the good news of Jesus took root and spread quickly among the Gentiles. Yet there is an irony in the story of healing that Mark tells. Jesus gives the man the gift of speech, but then tells him not to use it. Jesus asks that the news of his healing power, which is evidence of his identity as the Messiah, not be spread. This is a recurring motif in Mark s Gospel and is sometimes called the messianic secret. We are working hard to communicate with all MHR CCD families about our K-11 program that begins on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 9am-10:20am for Grades K-8. Grades 9-11 begins on Sunday, Sept. 23. Hadley Weekend Meals Ministry A project of MHR, First Congregational, North Hadley Congregational, and Take and Eat, supported by the Hadley Young Men s Club. Meals are delivered on the 1st Saturday and 2nd Sunday each month. MHR s team prepares meals on the 2nd Sunday every month. Want to help? 5 What s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer Disturbance in the Church By now we are all well aware of the difficulty that our Church finds herself in with regard to recent news about past abuse and cover ups at high levels. You may be wondering what you can do or where you can find some peace. A good place to start is to ponder on Jesus own words regarding individuals who hurt those He loves: Thursday, September 6 was the date of the kick-off meeting of i.d. 9:16, the new younger adult group at MHR (people who are roughly in their 20s and 30s, give or take). More information regarding that meeting and the goal of i.d.916 will be forthcoming. In the mean time you are invited to visit to learn more about this group. October Spooktacular Cash Calendar Please join us in some holiday fun and a church fundraiser. We are offering an October cash calendar. Tickets and information will arrive at your home in mid-september, or you may pick up tickets now in the church vestibules or the parish office. Tickets are $10. each. Good luck! A Word from our Director of Faith Formation As a new school year begins, we pray for all teachers and their students. May parents take responsibility as the primary educators of their children and guide them to what is true and right....whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea (Mt 18:6). Regarding the Church itself, Jesus said, the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. You may find it instructive to watch a YouTube video of a sermon by homilist Father Altier of the Church of St. Raphael, Crystal, MN. Type the following in your browser: Fr. Altier Church Crisis. The sermon is difficult in its content, but, ultimately hopeful in showing that the Church will be triumphant in the end. This is definitely a time for prayer and fasting. It is not a time to lose our faith. As St. Peter once said, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. -Pray for the Church -Pray for the victims -Pray for the strength and courage of faithful, holy priests and bishops -Pray for sinning priests and bishops to come to full repentance -Pray for one another- God s Will will be done!
