Gospel Reading Mark 9:38-43,45,47-48 Jesus teaches that whoever is not against him is for him. Background on the Gospel Reading In today s Gospel, the disciple John questions Jesus about an unknown exorcist who was driving out demons in Jesus name. John s question might have been motivated by jealousy. Previously in Mark's Gospel, Jesus healed a boy whom the disciples had been unable to heal. John s question is further evidence that the disciples have not yet grasped Jesus words to them. They continue to compare themselves to others who seem to have greater healing powers, and they do not want to share the power of Jesus name with others. Today the demon possession described in the Gospels might be seen as a form of mental illness, but the need for healing these syndromes was as real then as it is now. Exorcism was a common practice in first-century Palestine. Some people had the power to heal the symptoms of possession. One of the strategies used was to invoke the name of a person or figure who was believed to have the power to heal. The disciples observed that the unknown exorcist invoked Jesus name and was successful in his healing efforts. This unknown healer recognized the power of Jesus name, yet he was not a follower of Jesus. In his reply to his disciples, Jesus acknowledges that deeds of faith can precede the words of faith. He also teaches that the disciples should not be reluctant to share Jesus healing powers with others. Later in this Gospel, Jesus teaches us not to create obstacles for those who are just beginning to have faith but to encourage even the smallest signs of faith. The Greek word used here for sin also connotes stumbling or causing scandal. In vivid terms Jesus teaches his disciples the consequences to those who would put obstacles before people who are on the road to faith. 4 2018 MEN S RETREAT Men of St. Mary s Church Longmeadow are again planning for their annual retreat weekend and wish to extend an invitation to other men from the diocese to join them. Please save the date for the weekend of Nov. 2-4 at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford, CT. This is a great opportunity to take care of all your spiritual health. Hadley Weekend Meals Ministry A project of MHR, First Congregational, North Hadley Congregational, and Take and Eat, supported by the Hadley Young Men s Club. Meals are delivered on the 1st Saturday and 2nd Sunday each month. MHR s team prepares meals on the 2nd Sunday every month. Want to help? If you, or someone you know, would like a visit while in the hospital, please call or the Office: About the Diaconate As the Church celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Diaconate in the United States, we are offering a seminar about the diaconate, explaining what a deacon is; where the role came from; and what deacons do in the modern Church. This seminar will be held on a Saturday and will consist of two parts. The first part describes the diaconate and answers your questions. After a break, the second part will explore the diaconate in our diocese and discuss the process of entering discernment and formation for the diaconate. All are welcome to attend both parts of the day. Men considering the diaconate should, with their wives, attend the full seminar. We ll have snacks and drinks. You may want to bring a lunch. The seminar will be held in 3 different locations and will be offered at 3 times. Each one is on a Saturday from 10 am-2pm. (The first seminar was held on Sept 29 at St. Ann s in Lenox, but there are 2 more opportunities to attend the seminar) : St. John Cantius Church, 10 Hawley St, Northampton, on October 6 or Mary, Mother of Hope in Springfield on October 20. The principal instructor will be Deacon Tom Lynch. He will be joined by members of the Diaconate Formation Board and area deacons. Piotr has been away on retreat, we ve been blessed by the visit of Father Tomasz Gorny, who celebrated all the morning Masses in our chapel and also the 4pm Vigil Mass on Saturday, Sept. 29. Solar Visitor Coming to Assist Interested Parishioners Brian Buzby, from the solar company Ampion, will be at MHR after the 4:00pm Mass on Saturday, October 6, to answer all your questions and to help you begin saving 10% on your electricity bills. If you think you might be interested, please bring a recent electricity bill (both pages) so that he can determine the amount of electricity you use. Brian can help you sign up and/or answer whatever questions you might have. No obligation. The Knights of Columbus Annual Tootsie Roll Drive for God s Special Children will be taking place on the weekend of October 6-7, The Knights will be collecting at the Saturday and Sunday Masses.
