3 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. Gospel Reading Mark 13:24-32 Jesus teaches about the signs of the coming of the Son of Man. Background on the Gospel Reading This Sunday is the second to last Sunday of our liturgical year. As we approach the end of the Church year, our Gospel invites us to consider Jesus predictions and teaching about the end of the world. In the context of Mark s Gospel, Jesus words about this are spoken to his disciples as he prepares them for his passion and death. Before we consider Jesus words, it is important to note the political backdrop against which many think Mark s Gospel was written. Most scholars concur that Mark wrote his Gospel for Christians living in or near Rome about 30 to 40 years after the death of Jesus. This was a time of political turmoil in Rome. Some Christians experienced persecution by the Romans during the reign of the emperor Nero (about 64 A.D.). Jewish revolutionaries rebelled against the Romans, which led the Romans to destroy the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. In this time of political turmoil and persecution, many in Mark s community might have wondered if the end times predicted by Jesus were in fact quite near. Last Sunday we heard Jesus observation about the contributions being made to the temple treasury and the example of sacrificial giving that he saw in the poor widow s offering. If we had been reading Mark s Gospel continuously, we would have heard Jesus predict the destruction of the Temple, his teaching about the costs of discipleship, and the woes that will accompany the end times. Finally, we would have heard Jesus instruct his disciples about the need for watchfulness so that they will not be caught unprepared for this final day of judgment. In today s Gospel, Jesus continues this teaching by offering his disciples signs to look for that will indicate that the coming of the Son of Man is near. His words and images draw upon Old Testament imagery, especially images found in the Book of Daniel. Next, Jesus offers the lesson of the fig tree, a parable that teaches that if one knows how to read the signs, one can be prepared for the end times. Jesus also teaches, however, that no one knows when the end time will come, except the Father. In the verses that follow this reading in Mark s Gospel, Jesus continues to warn his disciples to be on watch for this end time. Jesus words are not spoken to frighten his disciples, nor should they frighten us. Rather, they are offered to prepare us for the changes we will experience during our lifetimes and at the end times. Our consolation and hope is found in the lasting nature of Jesus words and God s never-ending love for us. We stock our boxes from the Food Pantry. On Sunday, November 11, Sandy Wentworth Miller headed up the meal prep team that included Kathy Godek, Joe & Judy Pelis, and Donna Paddock. The team prepared a fall feast that included pork tenderloin, roasted potatoes, and root vegetables, corn bread, homemade applesauce, and apple crisp. Since Monday, November 12 was a holiday, a lunch of ham & cheese sandwiches, pickles, and brownies was also provided. Meals were delivered by drivers Sheryl Brighenti, Betty Faulkner, MaryAnn Mish, Diane Stengle, and Sandy Wentworth Miller. Abundant thanks to all for your time and talent in making this meal possible! Special thanks to Sandy who also donated the cost of the Sunday meal.

4 Pastoral Council Update The Pastoral Council met on Oct 22. Here are some highlights: Martha Boisvert has resigned from the Council. We thank her for her contribution and for serving as the chairperson. Frank Wilda, Jr. will take over that role temporarily. Report from the Finance Committee Buildings and Grounds: The October cash calendar yielded a profit of $1,100. An architect is in the process of drawing up plans for repair of the roof and skylight. We are in the process of looking at bids for the church renovation: redesign of the altar and wood panels behind the altar; refurbishing pews and kneelers; and replacing the carpet. Improvements have been made to the kitchen, including repair of the dishwasher. A manual has been created for use in the kitchen. The Spiritual Life Commission has arranged plans for a parish trip to Our Lady of La Salette Shrine in Attleboro on Dec. 15. The Council Approved the revision of the Parish Registration Form. Adult Formation: We are planning to start an on-going Bible Study Program in January. A prelude to that will be two presentations on an Introduction to the Bible in Advent. Follow-up to monthly Bingo: The monthly Saturday night Bingo and potluck supper have been a great success. Thank you to Felicia Fil for the fun! We are looking to continue this activity in some way. We welcome parishioners suggestions. What We Need at the Hadley Food Pantry The most needed items this week are cereal and crackers. 5 What s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer Confirmation at MHR Wishing all our confirmation candidates a blessed day on Sunday, November 18th! LA SALETTE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS The Most Holy Redeemer Church Spiritual Life Committee & Pastoral Council would like to invite you to a day of reflection and lights at the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, MA on Dec 15. Like Lent for Easter, Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. For many of us, though, it seems to be more of a time of rushing around and stress. Come take a little break from the gift buying, cookie baking, and card mailing by joining us on a bus trip to reflect on the Word of God during Mass and see His beauty in the festival of lights at the shrine. The cost is $30. per person, which will cover the bus ride to and from the shrine and a donation to the shrine. We are planning to eat in the food court at the shrine and each participant is responsible for the cost of his or her meal. Sign up in the office or leave your payment in full in an envelope clearly marked Shrine Trip with your name and phone number inside. Adopt -a -Tree at Holy Rosary Cemetery We now have three families who have each adopted a tree at Holy Rosary Cemetery! Trees are being planted in order to beautify the cemetery grounds and provide splendor and shade for decades to come. You can adopt a tree for $200. The trees are Red Sunset Maples, which we purchased from Wanczyk Nursery in Hadley. Stop in the office or put payment in an envelope clearly marked for Tree Adoption in the collection basket with your name and phone number included. KOC New Beginnings Harvest Dinner a Huge Success! On Nov. 3, the Knights of Columbus Council #1619 hosted the New Beginnings Harvest Dinner at MHR. One hundred fifty diners were treated to a fine meal provided by The Log Cabin in Holyoke. Music was provided by Lark Jazz Trio. A certificate of Congratulations and a personal letter from U.S. Rep. James McGovern were presented to Bill Dion, our parishioner and a Knight of Columbus! Bill also received the Knights of Columbus Lifetime Achievement of 50 Years plaque. Congratulations, Bill! Grand Knight Frank Lattuca and his wife Nancy were recognized as the KOC Family of the Year for Outstanding and Dedicated Service. Frank and Nancy are pictured below in the 2nd and 3rd seat to Father Piotr s left. Parishioners and friends are also seated with Father.
