3 You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world to testify to the truth. Background on the Gospel Reading This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church s liturgical year. On this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. Each year we set aside this Sunday to reflect upon this title that we have given to Jesus. In Lectionary Cycle C, we read a portion of the passion from the Gospel of John, which is also part of the Gospel reading proclaimed each year on Good Friday. In John s Gospel, Pilate is shown in a more favorable light than in the other Gospels. In today s reading, we hear one of two dialogues between Jesus and Pilate that are reported in John s Gospel. Pilate questions Jesus about the charges brought against him. Caiaphas and the high priests have charged Jesus with a political crime, one that would require a punishment of death. Pilate distances himself from the Jewish leaders who accuse Jesus; he is not a Jew, and he seems to want little to do with this Jewish affair. In his responses to Pilate s questions, Jesus distinguishes his kingdom from the political powers of this world. King and kingdom may be appropriate terms for Jesus mission and promise, but only by analogy. Jesus is king, but not the kind of king we imagine or expect. He was certainly not the kind of king Pilate feared he might be. Jesus refers to a kingdom that does not belong to this world. This has been mentioned earlier in John s Gospel. Recall that in his prayer during the Last Supper discourse (see John 17:6-18), Jesus prayed for his disciples who are in the world but do not belong to the world. Yet like Jesus, they are sent into the world for the world s salvation. In today s reading, we see Jesus identify the final proof that his kingdom is not of this world: If his kingdom were of this world, then there would be people fighting to save him. Again we hear echoes of John s theme salvation is worked out through a cosmic battle. It is helpful to return to the first chapter of John s Gospel to understand the context for Jesus words to Pilate. Jesus came into the world, but the world did not know him. In John s language, the world prefers the darkness, and yet the light will not be overcome by the darkness. Truth has been another important theme in John s Gospel. We see it emphasized in the conclusion of the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Those who know the truth will recognize Jesus as king and will know how to interpret this insight. Yet Jesus kingship was hidden from many of his contemporaries. Only those chosen, those who have the eyes of faith, are able to see. As modern disciples of Jesus, we also struggle at times to recognize Jesus as king. Today s Gospel invites us to see with eyes of faith that we might recognize that Jesus, through his crucifixion and death, is indeed king and Savior of all. Prayer Shawl Ministry If you knit, crochet or quilt, the Prayer Shawl Ministry is looking for donations of prayer shawls or lap blankets. We can feel overwhelmed by the prospect of picking up a Bible and reading it. Where do I start? What Bible should I use? In anticipation of beginning an on-going Bible Study Program in 2019, Fr. Piotr and Joan Smola will present 2 sessions: 1. Introducing a basic understanding of the Bible and its place in the Church and our lives. This session will address such questions as: What is the Bible? Who wrote it? When was it written? How do Catholics understand the Bible? 2. The New Testament. This session will have a special focus on the birth of Jesus. The first two sessions will take place on Tuesday, Dec 4 and Tuesday, Dec. 18. Both will be held from 6:30pm-7:45pm. Coffee, anyone? 4 LA SALETTE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS BUS TRIP The Most Holy Redeemer Church Spiritual Life Committee & Pastoral Council would like to invite you to a day of reflection and lights at the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, MA on Dec 15. Like Lent for Easter, Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. For many of us, though, it seems to be more of a time of rushing around and stress. Come take a little break from the gift buying, cookie baking, and card mailing by joining us on a bus trip to reflect on the Word of God during Mass and see His beauty in the festival of lights at the shrine. The cost is $30. per person, which will cover the bus ride to and from the shrine and a donation to the shrine. We are planning to eat in the food court at the shrine and each participant is responsible for the cost of his or her meal. Sign up in the office or leave your payment in full in an envelope clearly marked Shrine Trip with your name and phone number inside. Our plan for the day is as follows: 12:30 pm Depart MHR parish (2hr15 min ride) 3:00 pm Arrive at La Salette Shrine 400 pm Mass 5:30 pm Dinner at the shrine food court 6:00pm Enjoy self -guided walk through the Festival of Lights 8-8:30pm Depart Shrine 10:30 pm Arrive back at MHR parish Correction regarding An Irish Country Christmas If you are planning to attend An Irish Country Christmas Concert at Pope Francis High School Auditorium on December 16, please note that the phone number given to us (and published recently in our bulletin) was incorrect. Important Notice for Diocese of Springfield Former Employees The Diocese of Springfield has important news for former employees who are vested in the frozen Diocese Pension Plan, and are not currently collecting their pension. If you or someone you know worked for the Diocese and terminated prior to 1/1/2018, with 5 yrs of service, you could qualify. Ascensus representative Donna Staryarsky is administering contact with former employees. Ascensus is the successor firm to Pension Associates, and Donna has many yrs of involvement with the Diocesan pension plan. Meals are delivered on the 1st Saturday and 2nd Sunday each month. MHR s team prepares meals on the 2nd Sunday every month. Want to help? 5 What s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer Senior Prom at MHR On Saturday November 11, 2018, the Senior Prom took place in the Parish Center. One of our beloved parishioners and Ambassador Girl Scout Felicia Fil hosted the event. She has been working toward becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout. The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. All of us here at MHR are very proud of Felicia s accomplishments. She made lots of senior citizens very happy on November 11!
