3 ...His heart was moved with pity for...they were like sheep without a shepherd... July 21-22, 2018 Gospel Reading Mark 6:30-34 Jesus invites his disciples to rest after their ministry, and Jesus is moved with pity for the crowds who pursue them. Background on the Gospel Reading In this today s Gospel, we read the report of the return of the Twelve, who were sent by Jesus to preach repentance, heal the sick, and drive out demons. When the Twelve return to Jesus, he invites them to come away from the crowds and rest. But the crowds will not give them peace. As the Twelve have shared in Jesus ministry, they now appear to share in his popularity. The crowds continue to approach them, and Mark reports that the disciples don t even have time to eat. In an effort to get away, Jesus and his disciples board a boat in hopes of finding a deserted place. But the crowds notice this and arrive ahead of them. The crowds are so persistent that Jesus and his disciples cannot find a place to be alone. Mark s Gospel tells us that Jesus is moved with pity and begins to teach the crowds. Our Gospel for today stops here, but Mark s report of the unyielding demands of the crowd continues in the verses that follow. If we were to continue reading from Mark s Gospel, we would hear Jesus instruct his disciples to feed the crowd in the familiar miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The work of Jesus and his disciples appears to be a round-the-clock job. In the next few weeks, we will hear the story of Jesus feeding of the multitude, but our Lectionary will turn to the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John to report and reflect on this story. In today s Gospel, we hear the Twelve referred to as apostles. The word apostle is a Greek word meaning one who is sent. Jesus chose twelve men from among his disciples whom he sent to share in his ministry of preaching and healing. The first report of this is found in the third chapter of Mark s Gospel, where the Twelve are also called apostles and the names of this select group are listed. We who are Jesus disciples today have also been sent to share the Gospel with others. Perhaps our commitment to following Jesus as his disciple leaves us feeling tired and overwhelmed. In today s Gospel, we hear Jesus affirm the importance of times of rest and renewal. Jesus wanted his disciples to come away and spend time alone with him. This is what we seek and find in our life of prayer and in our celebration of the Eucharist. Dr. SCOTT HAHN Coming to MA! Our canned soup and vegetable shelves are full at this time. We appreciate your continued donations. Monetary donations are also appreciated by including extra cash or a check in your regular envelope and designating it for the Food Pantry. Come visit us to see what we do and what you can do. Volunteers are always needed. The pantry serves between 4 and 12 families each Sunday from 12-1 pm. Are you in need? The Hadley Food Pantry is here to help. Stop by the Most Holy Redeemer Parish Hall any Sunday between 12 and 1! We are able to offer this program through donations received from the parishioners of Most Holy Redeemer and the First Congregational Church, and we would like to thank all of the volunteers and all of you who continue to donate.

4 The Maryland State Boychoir LIVE IN CONCERT FREE ADMISSION THURSDAY, JULY 26, :30 pm at St. Mary s Church 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, MA Come listen to the Concert Choir in a thrilling performance of a variety of music, including sacred masterworks, contemporary pieces, gospel, spirituals and folksongs. The choir is singing as part of a 9-day tour through Massachusetts, Quebec City, and Montreal. Founded in 1987, the Maryland State Boychoir (MSB), Maryland s Official Goodwill Ambassadors, is comprised of a diverse group of about 130 talented boys, ages 7 to 20, who love to sing. The choir s reputation for excellence has resulted in invitations to perform in a variety of venues such as The White House, Kennedy Center, National Cathedral, St. Patrick s and Holy Trinity Cathedrals in New York, Saint Patrick s Cathedral in Ireland, and Coventry Cathedral in England. As the one Roman Catholic Church in the Town of Hadley, Massachusetts, our Mission is: To be a welcoming place of worship for all. To proclaim the word of God and celebrate the sacraments. To attend to our ongoing formation in Christian living and support one another in spiritual growth. To dedicate our service to God. To recognize and support our responsibility for God s people, for spiritual and corporal works of mercy to the larger community, area and world. To celebrate our belief in the message and teachings of Jesus Christ and the Roman Catholic Church and demonstrate our appreciation for the many gifts we have received.

5 What s Happening at Most Holy Redeemer WELCOME DEACON MIKE! It is with great pleasure that we welcome Deacon Mike Perkins to MHR. Deacon already introduced himself to parishioners on the weekend of July14-15, but here are a few highlights: Deacon Mike credits his family for giving him a good Catholic formation. He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart as well as Cathedral High School. He completed a year at STCC and then joined the Navy. Apparently, Deacon Mike has had an illustrious career in both the Navy and the Marines. One of the most important aspects of the Navy was meeting and marrying his wife Martha, whom he met during his last year there. Deacon joined the Marines in He later joined the Hampden County Sheriff s Dept. and stayed on for 24 years. He says his calling to be a deacon was really a culmination of his entire life. God chased me, he says. If you ask Deacon Mike where he is from, he responds with great joviality: I m from God. Deacon Mike and Martha live in Springfield, MA, and they have two children: Jeremy, aged 33, and Brenna aged 31. It is clear that Deacon has humor and grace and a good dose of humility. He says he is looking forward to walking the journey with the parishioners here at MHR, and he is, above all, here to serve. As you can see from the picture at right, he and our beloved Fr. Piotr are getting along fabulously, sharing a laugh and two thumbs up for their new partnership. If you haven t met Deacon Mike personally, please say hello after one of the weekend Masses.
