On Sunday, September 18 th, we held a congregational meeting in fellowship hall. The purpose of the meeting was to identify: 1) What we are doing administratively, 2) What we are doing regarding facilities, and 3) Give a report on the demographic studies of the congregation and community. Many people expressed surprise at all we are currently doing. The following is a brief summary of that portion of the meeting. 1) We ve been working on a 1 st draft of the Constitution and By-laws. Jane Hanks has been appointed chair of the committee to finalize these documents. 2) A personnel policy is being drafted, utilizing other DOC congregational manuals. 3) Job descriptions for employees and committee chairs are being updated and redefined. 4) We have a committee to review our mission statement. 5) A Nominating Committee has been formed to identify potential officers for ) Shawn is updating our membership information from all our old records and books. 7) Debbie has revamped our financial reports and made us compliant with federal and state requirements. 8) Sandy has organized the offerings so we know if money received is memorial, regular offering or a repay. 9) Funeral dinners, chaired by Paula Ellis, now include a hot lunch instead of sandwiches and salads. 10) Stewardship will send mid-year reports on tithes and offerings. 11) Worship is working on an in-house Advent devotional for ) The parking lot will be resurfaced and striped before the end of October. 13) We are currently receiving bids for a new furnace-a/c. One of ours is so old and rusted, we had to get carbon monoxide detectors last winter to be able to safely run it. 14) We purchased a new commercial 220 dishwasher for the kitchen. 15) The metal door to the kitchen is going to be replaced. 16) We have had trouble with the stove/oven. We are getting bids on repair. If we find it is not repairable, we will replace it. (Donor money is available.) 17) We are hoping the third stained glass window (in the chapel) will soon be completed. 18) As a trained licensed minister, Debbie is now Associate Pastor with emphasis in administration, Missional church, and youth. 19) We have new, higher toilets in the ladies bathroom and the two bathrooms downstairs have new paint, floors, and fixtures. 20) The carpet in the sanctuary is going to be re-stretched (again). 21) A riding lawn mower has been donated and Cory built a building in which to store it. 22) The new color camera has been installed in the sanctuary. 23) The sound system is now complete for the sanctuary, nursery and fellowship hall. 24) We now own the drums in the sanctuary. 25) We purchased a new computer this year for Margi. 26) A new men s group has been formed and is doing very well. DATE CHANGE The Nominating Committee is: Julie Roush - Chair Jack Manahan Steve Ashford Rick Achenbach Sharon Bracken The Nominating Committee is in charge of recommending nominees to the Board for the 2012 ballot. After it is approved by the Board, it will go to the congregation, at the annual congregational meeting on Sunday, November 20 th. The elected offices of the church are: Chairman of the Board Vice Chairman of the Board Secretary of the Board Treasurer Financial Secretary Historian Assistant Historian Trustees Elders Diaconate Associate Diaconate Some positions have people who are eligible to serve for an additional term. If you are interested or have a recommendation for any of the offices, please see someone from the Nominating Committee. All suggestions should be made to the Nominating Committee by Sunday, October 2 nd. / It s that time of the year for the annual stewardship and budget process. You have recently received an letter or a letter in the mail from the Stewardship Committee with the initial request for your consideration of your 2012 pledge. A letter will be mailed shortly to all potential givers enclosing the pledge card and requesting its prompt return. The Committee has been reviewing the progress we have made this year compared to our 2011 budget forecast. At this point, we are pleased to report that the income is somewhat more than had been anticipated and that expenditures are, overall, less than anticipated. Obviously, this is the best position to be in, but there are major issues on the horizon that we need to be prepared for - such as the repair or replacement of the stove, furnace, and air conditioner. Not only are there physical things that need to be fixed, but as the church moves towards being more mission -oriented, funding needs to be in place to support that effort. As you receive the pledge card, please prayerfully consider your ability to help achieve the church s goals. The congregation will vote on a budget in November, but we would like to get the cards back as soon as possible so we can make future plans on a solid foundation. -! The Tall Oaks Gala scheduled for October 28 th is almost here; there s still time to buy a ticket, contribute something for the silent auction, make a monetary contribution through the record board in the narthex or do it all as some of us will. If transportation to the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza is a problem, there will be car-pooling available. Each of us is encouraged to do all we can to make this 50 th Anniversary Celebration of Tall Oaks, which most of us know and love, a great success.

October 9 th - 12:30-4:30 p.m. We will be doing the ropes course at Tall Oaks. We will send forms home next week. They will also be ed when I get them. We will leave the church promptly at 12:30 p.m. Feel free to bring a sack lunch! October 16 th - 6:30-7:30 p.m. Regular Meeting October 23 rd - 6:30-7:30 p.m. Regular Meeting October 30 th - TBD We are working on getting together with the Bonner United Methodist Church for some fun! - Did you know you could help Vaughn-Trent Community Services raise badly needed funds by not only attending a movie but also receiving a DVD of the film and two books at the same time? An out-of-area resident, concerned that small organizations need help, has arranged for a showing of the film The Lamp. The event takes place on Tuesday, October 11 th at 7:00 p.m. at the AMC Ward Parkway Theater. For $50.00 you will get two tickets to the event along with the novel of the same name. Author Jim Stovall also wrote The Ultimate Gift, which was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. The other book is Just Believe by award winning director Tracy J. Trost. Half the proceeds of the evening will be shared between Vaughn-Trent and Kids TLC which works with troubled and abused children. Saturday, September 3 rd, we studied flag history and etiquette with a video of Woody Ridgway, American Flag vexillologist, following our monthly potluck meal and short business session. Alice, Marlin, and Dorothy were hosts and used a back to school theme. We chose to cancel the winery trip in favor of Harrah, Frie Kansas! German Struggle Against Slavery in Kansas Territory, presented by William Keel at the Monticello Historical Society, September 8 th. This proved to be an excellent choice because he was a knowledgeable, humorous speaker. (The Society also served excellent refreshments.) Eight BEAS gathered for dinner at Ruby Tuesdays preceding the presentation, which also proved to be an excellent choice. October 13 th at 7:00 p.m. Jim Hoy will be the Monticello Society s speaker on Boots and Stetsons: The Kansas Cowboy. We had scheduled a trip to Emporia October 15 th, but with the price of gas we thank Dr. Hoy, who is a professor at Emporia, for saving us a trip. Hosts for our October potluck are Mary, Janet and Vicki. Twila Williams, Secretary/Treasurer The Friends of the Bonner Library are offering a book delivery service to residents of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville who are shut-in, either long-term or during a short period of convalescence. The friends deliver books of your choice on the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of each month. Call the library at and ask for information about Books in Motion. The Friends are also sponsoring presentations by three Kansas authors. On Sunday, October 16 th at 2:00, Jeanne Glidewell, a Bonner resident and writer of cozy mysteries will speak. Sunday November 20 th brings nationally acclaimed mystery writer Nancy Pickard to the library. These programs are sure to be interesting and informative to all book lovers.

6 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 6 by Lorine Shannon On September 7 th, CWF met at 9:30, for breakfast at Tall Oaks. What a pleasure and pure delight! The day was beautiful, and the sky clear. Our food was served to us and delicious, as it always is. After breakfast, we moved into another section of the room to pray and count our blessings. The lesson theme was entitled, Greatly honoured are the Humble. From the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells us blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. The Greek word for meek really means humbled. We talked about the word and I asked the ladies what it means to be humble in our culture today? The various answers were very interesting. We also discussed what it means to mourn. As Christians, we look at mourning differently than they did in the Old Testament days. But we can all relate to an ancient proverb from Jesus day, All sunshine makes a desert. Sorrow isn t fun, but it often makes us stronger and by contrast, intensifies times of joy. Our next meeting will be October 5 th at 12:30 p.m. Jean Brown is leading the lesson. Greatly honoured are those who are famished and parched for justice!
