1 FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF BONNER SPRINGS (Disciples of Christ) TIBLOW TIDINGS March 2012 CHURCH STAFF Pastor Margi Colerick Associate Pastor Debbie Lohmann Secretary Shawn VanWagner Custodian Rick Achenbach Organist Gisela Weber Music Team Leader Katie Rebecchi Choir Director George Blume Tidings Editor Shawn VanWagner Nursery Devene Salvino TIDINGS DEADLINE MARCH 21st! Lent offers us an opportunity to reflect on our faith and remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us all. An intentional season, it s peppered with invitations to repent, change course, and come alongside the Saviour. As the days pass from morning to night, we are blessed with a reflective interval, set aside for prayer, praise, and penitence. Many years ago, I read a true story, told by a young soldier who was injured on the battlefield, during World War II. He reported that a man, dressed all in white, came to him and began ministering to his wounds. The soldier noticed that the man s hands were bleeding, and he asked what had happened to them. The Man in white replied: Son, these are old wounds, but they have bothered me much of late. In the days and weeks that followed, the young soldier tried to find the Good Samaritan, but he never did and he never really thought that he would. In these days leading to the Cross, we know these old wounds cannot heal, as long as people (including you and me), drive new nails in, every day. By sin, we hang the Son high, on battlefields, shopping malls, schools, and even churches. Since the first of the year, more than 170 people just in Baghdad, have died in terrorist attacks. Last month, another student lost their life, in a school shooting. Nine-year-old Samantha Hardin, died after being forced to run for three hours straight because she lied about eating a candy bar. And three-year-old Blake Litton, was beaten to death in Stover, Missouri. These events make the headlines, but we know the emotions of jealousy, envy, pride, anger, pettiness, short-temperedness, and even hate, can infiltrate any of our lives. These too, re-injure the precious hands and heart, of our Christ. Lent is a time to come together, take stock of our priorities, re-commit our lives to the Saviour, and determine to make His Message of Love, Compassion, Justice for all, and humble Servanthood, a part of our daily lives. We know, Jesus had a choice. He didn t have to die. He CHOSE to die for us to pay the price of our sin, so that WE might be changed; so that WE could experience Abundant Life and fellowship with the Father. In this time of renewal, may we find new direction. May we make Him proud. love, margi First Christian Church of Bonner Springs 148 N. 5 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 5 The Cancer Action Group has been a long-standing service organization in our church. It dates back to the late 50 s and was comprised of volunteers who met regularly to contribute their time in service to cancer patients in the Kansas City area. Today this group is still meeting in the Fellowship Hall once a month to sew bed pads for Cancer Action. In 2009 Jackie Heffley and Frances Haynes were honored at a Heart of Gold 50 th Anniversary Celebration and are still faithful in their devotion to this group s cause. Betty Dunivan, Lucy Soptic from the Methodist Church, and Jean Brown are also contributors as is Alice Zimmerman who crochets many afghans. Volunteers are especially needed to help make the bed pads, which are hand sewn using a running stitch. This work can, of course, be done alongside others at a table in the Fellowship Hall, but could be done independently in one s own home. It could even give purpose to television watching. This is a service that requires little time. The group meets for two hours once a month and need minimal skill (cutting and basic sewing). Contact Betty Dunivan ( ) for details on sewing at home or just show up to help Have you ever seen someone standing on a street corner holding a cardboard sign that says Will Work for Food, Homeless and Hungry or something similar? What are your thoughts when you look at that person? I m so blessed, I wonder how much they collect per day, will they buy food or alcohol, cigarettes or drugs if I give them money, or how can I help? As Christians, we want to help, but are afraid of being used or enabling habits. So, what is the answer? BLESSING BAGS are the answer. BLESSING BAGS are large ziplock bags filled with small non-perishable food items and a bottle of water along with an encouraging note. They could include toiletry items or even inexpensive hats and gloves. The bags are made to carry in your car. Whenever you see someone with one of these signs, simply hand them a bag. The middle school Sunday school class will be assembling bags for members of the congregation to carry and hand out. We would like to ask you to donate items to go in the bags. Here are some items we would like to include: Fruit Cups Bottled Water Granola/Cereal Bars Small packages of Nuts $5 Gift Cards (for McDonald s or Wendy s) Packages of Peanut Butter and/or Cheese Crackers Cookies Hard Candy Fruit Snacks Knit Gloves and Hats Tooth Brushes and Toothpaste Individually wrapped Beef Sticks/Beef Jerky There will be a container in the Narthex to drop off items. Once the bags are assembled, we will place them there for the congregation to pick up. (Please only take 1-2 bags at a time. If you need a larger number, please let us know so we can prepare.) We plan to keep bags ready and available for pick up all of the time. Our class will make encouraging notes to include in the bags, along with devotional booklets and information about how to be Saved. This is a wonderful mission project and a great opportunity for our class to take leadership of a project, so please help us make it a successful project that will help many people.
