June 2011 "This Church is truly a community Church. It cares about the community." These words were spoken at a recent meeting of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Steering Committee. No, it wasn't from a member of First Christian, but instead, was shared very sincerely, by the new Secretary/Treasurer of the Committee. The rest of the conversation was to praise us for being THE CHURCH that is really involved and central to Bonner Springs. Everyone in the meeting thanked us for welcoming and supporting not just the King Event, but for having a significant presence in the community. Wow. What a compliment. More good news: Debbie Lohmann completed her Commissioned Ministry course work at Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Out of the 30 who began the classes last August, only nine graduated at Central's Commencement Program. As a Commissioned Minister, Debbie is now recognized by the Region as clergy. Celebrating this accomplishment, the May Board of Directors, voted unanimously to change her title from Youth Director to Associate Pastor... recognizing her accomplishment and the many other ministries she has been doing all along. What does it mean to be a commissioned minister? A commissioned minister is authorized to serve in a specified ministry, in a particular congregation. Paperwork has to be renewed annually. If, at a later time, Debbie chooses to seek ordination, that will expand her ability to serve wherever called, in whatever capacity, not just in one location, and without annual renewal. We are all very proud of Debbie's accomplishment and her commitment to serve Christ and this Church. One more good word: The Visioning Team (born from the congregational meetings we held last year) has proposed a first step to increasing our mission in the community. For the annual Relay for Life, June 10-11, we will be hosting a prayer tent, staffed by people committed to pray for the conquest of cancer and for those whose lives have been impacted by this disease. Letters have gone out to the Churches in Bonner Springs and Edwardsville, inviting them to JOIN US in this endeavor. Hopefully, many with a heart for prayer, will choose to gather with us, and pray. If YOU feel called to pray with us... or to be prayed for... or you would like to have a loved one prayed for... let Debbie Lohmann KNOW! 2 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 2 BEAS ARE BUZZING Bonner Edwardsville Area Singles (BEAS) observed Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) on May 7 at their monthly potluck meeting. Hosts Shirley, R.J., Jeannine & Twila shared their colorful Mexican souvenirs, music and serapes, as well as chili, Spanish rice, salsa chicken, etc. We also gained some information through games. Hosts for June 4 are Sharon, Sally and Ruth Ann and they have a good program planned. Two sites on our Osceola tour closed, so it seemed best to cancel, but Darlene Harrell stepped up to arrange a trip to the Overland Park Historic Homes Trolley Tour Saturday, May 21st. We were taken to each house by an old fashioned trolley. These selected homes were built from pre-statehood year of 1854 to the Roaring Twenties time of After the tour some of us ate lunch at the Great Day Café located in old downtown Overland Park on their patio. There were ten of us that enjoyed the outing. Twila Williams - Chairman Dorothy Sechrist - Co-Chairman PRAYER TENT As you heard last month, we will be hosting a prayer tent at the Relay for Life. If you would like to participate, but do not like to pray aloud, God can still use you. We have some other positions available. If you are feeling the call, please contact Debbie Lohmann at (cell) or at the church NIFTY FIFTY PLUS Everyone had a great time grilling at the home of Doug and Karen Thevenot s on May 15. The weather didn t cooperate for an outside gathering, but everyone seemed to have a good time anyway. The June event will be two separate events. On June 9, those who wish to, will go to the band concert in Bonner Springs. (No reservations needed!) The biggest event is that we are asking if anyone from the church would like to visit Ken and Edna Stewart on June 12. Plans are to carpool from the church parking lot at 2:00 p.m. that day and go visit them. Edna is going to ask if they can be visited in their social room at the nursing home. Plans are to stay for an hour or two and then maybe go out to eat as a group. If you are interested in joining us, please Karen at kthevenot@dkmetalsco.com or call I know Ken would love to see everyone and Edna was excited when Karen talked to her about it. THE CHALLENGE CONTINUES! The group that volunteered to help with the Micah Ministries dinner had a great experience. In spite of feeding hundreds of people, everything went so smoothly and everyone had a job that was important to the whole evening. Besides serving a meal, the project provides clothing and other items for those who attend. Plenty of clothing in all sizes is donated but there is one very important need that was in short supply: toilet paper! We all would agree that this is an important necessity and one we wouldn t want to do without. Our congregation is currently collecting toilet paper for those who receive services from Micah Ministries. Let s see how high we can build a T-P tower!

5 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 5 Stephan Kyule will be leading the way for Miles for Missions again this year! We want to thank everyone for their support. The group will be heading back to South Dakota this year to the same reservation. We will be leaving on July 10. On Sunday, July 3, we will start our run/bike ride from Tall Oaks camp at 7am and end our morning back at church. Please support our youth and help us to go out and show others God s love through our missions. NEED HELP? Do you need help this summer maintaining your lawn? If so, Jacob Korosec is the person to contact at MILES FOR MISSIONS FATHER S DAY BREAKFAST The mission trip youth will be hosting a Father s Day Breakfast on Sunday, June 19 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Please come and enjoy!! Wow! That s what I ve been feeling for months. The support this church has shown me has been so overwhelming. I appreciate my new Bible. It has four translations that I can see side-by-side. What a great tool for studying. The ministry survival kit will continually remind me of different aspects of ministry and how to treat others. On Saturday, May 14, I graduated with my Certificate of Ministry Studies from Central Baptist Theological Seminary. I plan to begin more classes at Central Theological Seminary in the fall.
