1 March 2014 Saturday March 29 th 6:00 p.m. Sunflower Room Bonner Springs Community Center 200 E. Third Street $10.00 per person (Ages 13 and older welcome!) - Prizes - - Fun - - Coffee Bar - - Vendors - - Dessert Bar - HELP FEED THE HUNGRY! How many of you remember Ed Ames? He was part of the famous Ames Brothers Quartet, and later played Mingo on the 1960 s TV show, Daniel Boone. His errant axe throwing was a recurrent blooper highlight on the Johnny Carson Show. He also starred in several Broadway musicals and had a successful solo singing career, as well. Among his pop hits was Try to Remember and my favorite, My Cup Runneth Over with Love. Those words are brimming with the predominant theme of Lent. At its foundation, the words come from Psalm 23. A cup that runs over, is a cup that is full and overflowing with blessings. The singer, understanding the precious gifts he has (wife, family, home), pauses in the busy-ness of everyday life, to give thanks. He does not take the blessings for granted. The words explain: Sometimes in the morning, when shadows are deep I lie here beside you, just watching you sleep. Sometimes in the evening, when you do not see I study the small things, you do constantly I memorize moments that I'm fondest of My cup runneth over with love. The words have power in their simplicity. As we enter into this period of Lent, may we too, stop and recognize our blessings, both big and small. In the quiet of the morning and the stillness of the evening, let s pause and give thanks. And let s not miss the fact that these words can also be a reflection of the love Jesus offers to us. He watches over us, sharing the big and small moments of our lives, when we may not even be aware of His Presence. His cup - the cup of death - continually overflows with love for US.enough love and more, to face a cross and die in our place. That said, the season of Lent asks us: Does the CUP of our lives runneth over with love for HIM?
2 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 2 Each month as I write this article I pray that God will give me the words to touch a heart or encourage an action. Today I sit here and ponder what the result of that would look like if we as a congregation earnestly pray for ourselves. At first, I think that sounds a bit selfish but let me expand. I was thinking that we could pray for the entire church body, the entire church building, all of the programs and all of the staff. We could ask God to heal our hurts, reinforce our hearts and extend our hands to those who are near. We could ask that all evil be cast out of our midst and be replaced with love. Whether we want to admit it or not, we are a treasure to be fought for in an epic battle. There will always be a battle between good and evil. The question comes, to whom do you want to surrender? Good? Or evil? I believe that Satan is crafty and sneaky and often uses good people to do his work in the name of God. The truth is those people do not even know the evil one is using them, because they just want to do good things. In order to shift the power back to the true Good, we need to band together and focus on asking God to be actively present in our hearts, lives, and church. I believe what Jesus proclaimed in Mathew 18:20 For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst. So, I wonder how present He would be if a group of about 100 or so people were asking Him for the exact same thing? I do not know about you, but I am willing to find out. This month please pray the following together each week as we worship, as we meet as groups, or as we pray privately. Call on God to be more active in our lives. - Julie Roush March 2: Pray that the church and its actions will be worthy of the Lord and that we will please God in every way. Colossians 1:9-10 We continually ask God to fill us with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the spirit gives, so that we may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God. March 9: Pray that the church will do the will of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works everything in conformity with the purpose of his will. March 16: Pray that God will make our plans succeed. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. March 23: Pray that Jesus will carry out his good works in our church. That he who began a good work in you will carry it out to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 & Come to fellowship every Wednesday evening for five weeks of the Lenten Season at our traditional Bread and Broth. A light meal of soup and breads will begin at 6:00 starting March 12 th ending April 9 th. A short program related to the Lenten Sunday worship theme will follow the meal and the evening will conclude around 7:15. You can sign up in the narthex. We will need donations of soup and bread, as well as help in the kitchen throughout the season. Men's night is March 19 th. Hope to see you there! - The Fellowship Committee
3 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 3 First Christian Church of Bonner Springs will be sponsoring a Life Line Screening Event on March 24 th. This program is an opportunity for you to participate in health screenings that can recognize potential risks, before they present symptoms. Every year, 750,000 people in America suffer strokes. Every 45 seconds, someone in the USA has a stroke. Every 3 minutes, someone dies of a stroke. Life Line Screening utilizes current medical technology to determine if you are at risk for a stroke. They don t prescribe medications or schedule procedures. They simply test and if problems are present, they alert the participate. They also offer several other health screenings in addition to stroke, including tests for abdominal aortic aneurysm and osteoporosis. Most, if not all, are noninvasive. If you sign up in one of the three ways below, you will receive a $10 discount AND $10 will be donated to the Church. Life Line Screening will not be making a donation for every attendee, rather they will make a donation for every person who signs up through one of these exclusive Helping Hands methods: PHONE: ONLINE: FAX: Our Lenten schedule is about to start. There will be Lenten devotionals available to pick up and enjoy as we prepare our hearts for the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus. Here is a current list of the planned worship times. March 5 th 7:00 p.m. - Ash Wednesday Service March 12 th - April 9 th 6:00 p.m. - Bread and Broth - Wednesdays April 17 th 7:00 p.m. - Maundy Thursday Service April 18 th Good Friday Walk-in Communion April 20 th Easter Sunrise Service led by the Youth Continental Breakfast by Fellowship 9:30 a.m. - Easter Worship Please join us as we participate in worship and fellowship throughout the Lenten season. We come to church each week and hear of all that God has done for us, all He has sacrificed and how much He loves us. The most amazing thing about this is that God is working in our lives every day, not just on Sunday at church. It would be wonderful to hear what God is doing in your life each day. The Worship Committee is inviting you to share your story, your testimony, of how you see God working in your life with the congregation during worship. If you feel that you cannot speak publicly, think about how God can use your story in someone s life and talk to a member of the Worship Committee or Margi and we can work something out. Some stories are just too important not to share. Please pray about sharing the work of God in your life with us.!?
4 TIBLOW TIDINGS PAGE 4! Presently I fill several volunteer positions at First Christian Church. I am Representative to the Region s Board of Director s, serve on Membership Ministry, sew for Cancer Action and participate in preparing food for Feed His Lambs. Outside of First Christian Church, I served as President and now Treasurer of Friends of the Bonner Library. I deliver books to shut-ins, usher at several venues in the Kansas City area, and I organized a group to work monthly at the clothing closet at PACES, a part of Wyandotte Behavioral Healthcare. Formerly, I served as a Deacon, Christian Education Chair, Fellowship Committee Chair with my husband Jim, taught Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School and was Volunteer Coordinator for the Tall Oaks Gala. Outside the church I have served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, Wyandotte Behavioral Health Care Board, Representative to State Friends of the Library and received Community Service Award in The snow is melting and the weather is getting warmer, so there soon will be no reason to make excuses to stay indoors. Lets get out and start getting in shape for the 5K fun walk/run or mountain bike ride at Tall Oaks on May 4 th. If all that movement isn't your thing there will be plenty of other activities for the entire family including a picnic during the afternoon. May seems far away, but it will get here sooner than we think, so put the date on your calendar and stay tuned for more information. Beside being a time of fun and fellowship, the day is also a fundraiser for Tall Oaks. We recently learned from the state fire marshal's inspection that over $40,000 worth of upgrading needs to be done. What better way to help out than by having a great time with friends and family at one of the best places for enjoying God's great outdoors? FLAMINGO FUNDRAISER for The DOCK will kick-off March 23 rd. Start thinking about who you would like to FLOCK! All proceeds will benefit the summer mission trip and CIY. ROLLER SKATING EVENT for Elementary and Middle School Youth We will be going to Skate City from 1:00 3:00 p.m. on March 23 rd. Cost will be $5.00 per person. HAND OUT FLYERS FOR INVITE A FRIEND SUNDAY: Please gather at the church at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 23 rd to walk Bonner and hand out flyers inviting our community. INVITE A FRIEND SUNDAY is March 30 th. It is time to reach out to friends, neighbors and family and invite them to church! The DOCK BINGO PARTY will be Sunday, April 6 th at 6:00 p.m. This will be a fundraiser for the summer mission trip and CIY conference. Dinner will be provided and fun for all!
