1 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 9:00 A.M. Sunday School 10:00 A.M. Coffee Fellowship 10:30 A.M. Worship SHORELINES FIRST COVENANT CHURCH NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2018 In This Issue: Pastor s Corner November Calendar Church Events News From Sunny Days Other Events Area News & Our Views PASTOR S CORNER On the last Sunday of October I asked us to consider what might cause Jesus to weep. Was there something in you or happening to you or around you that was breaking Jesus heart. For both Kris and I we discovered that Jesus, as we pictured him, was weeping because of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. As a student of history I have found that anitsemitism is a symptom of a sick culture. Anti-semitism is one of those canary in the coal mine warnings that should tell us that we need to profoundly turn back to God and quickly. On the surface, aniti-semitism is counter to so much Christian teaching and heritage. Salvation comes from Jews. Jesus tells the woman at the well and Jesus is hanged on a cross under a sign proclaiming in three languages, The King of the Jews. On a deeper and darker level there is much evidence to suggest that Satan himself does all he can to destroy God s chosen people. From the bondage in Egypt to Nazi death camps; from Herod s slaughter of the innocent Jewish babies to Soviet programs and all of the anti-semitism in between there is darkness that, I believe, can only be accounted for by a deeper malevolent force than a nationalistic malcontent with some automatic weapons. Simply put: If one is anti-semitic they are no follower of Christ. Pray for our nation. Pray that this hateful moment will wake us up to seek the one true God of mercy and justice for all people. Amen. 1

5 COLIN O DONNELL KAYAKING ON THE MISSOURI RIVER BREAKS COLIN O DONNELL and several Twin Cities Covenant friends took a little trip last month. The trip began at Fort Benton, Montana at the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. It is called "The Breaks" by locals. It is a series of badland areas characterized by rock outcroppings, steep bluffs and grassy plains. Created by Proclamation by President William J. Clinton on January 17, It is 149 miles long ending at Kipp recreational Area. Colin said, We paddled the whole 149 miles, camped each night and took turns cooking the evening meals! 6 COLIN O DONNELL KAYAKING THE MISSOURI RIVER BREAKS CONTINUED Colin said We entered the Upper Missouri Breaks at Fort Benton, Montana, On September 29 and spent six days on the river. We were on the same trail as Lewis and Clark. Along the way we passed abandoned homesteads, bluffs, and the Hole in the Wall mountain (shown on page 1). We explored some caverns and took some hikes. Our expedition also took us onto the prairies to visit the homestead of Gus Nelson. The Gus Nelson Homestead is one of the best preserved of the eight or nine remaining homesteads in the Missouri River Breaks in Fergus County, retaining four buildings and two sites. A main cabin, small cabin, henhouse, and collapsed privy are grouped among the buildings; the sites consist of a scattering of historic farm equipment Abandoned farm equipment at the Nelson homestead
7 Back in October 2014 we did an article in the AREA NEWS AND VIEWS about the folks who went South for the winter. This month we want to update a story of the snowbirds who have been added to this list. Bob and Pat Ludlow go to Naples, Florida every winter, Doug & Marcia Anton go to Mesa, Arizona, and DALE AND SHIRLEY MARTIN also go to Mesa, Arizona. Dale said, We were finding the winters here were getting longer and that some of our friends were leaving for the winter, so we decided to visit my sister Lucy who lives at Towerpoint Resort. We found it to be a very friendly park with a lot going on, so in the summer of 2015 I flew down to look at different park mod.pickle BALL els that were for sale. I liked the location of the COURTS one we bought. We have a nice back yard and lots of room. A canal and dog walking path are right behind our back yard. The park model we purchased needed some updating and repair which we have just about completed. Our park model has an Arizona room (similar to the one pictured here ) which includes a large living room, laundry room, and small work area. We have a covered patio that faces the walking path is an age 55 Plus RV and canal. So we get to visit with lots of people park located in Mesa, Arizowalking their dogs. Shirley says, our church is located in our park about three blocks from where we live. We both sing in the choir every Sunday and we have a concert every spring. I play in the 60 member Towerpoint band. Our neighbor and Dale head up the float building for a parade that is held the middle of March. We both play pickle ball several times a week. We walk a lot with our Bassett Hound, Speckles! I also take Spanish classes. Dale plays cards twice a week and goes swimming. Dale has two sisters that winter in Arizona and urged us to join them, so after visiting some other states we decided on Arizona! We love to entertain our guests. We took our cousins to visit the Roosevelt Dam when they were here. There is always something to do in the evenings! Photos courtesy of Dale Martin & Internet na and has sites. It is close to the picturesque foothills of the legendary Superstition Mountains. There are endless activities here woodworking, cards, games, biking, hiking, swimming, parties, concerts, darts, Chapel services and Bible studies, tennis, softball teams, shuffleboard, sewing, reading, and of course, dancing.

10 SUNNY DAYS PRESCHOOL NEWS We have had a busy month in October. We learned about Noah s Ark and the kids got to bring two stuffed animals; they thought that was fun. The kids also got to dress up in fun costumes and bring treats for their friends for Halloween. We also had our school pictures taken by Rickers. In the month of November we will learn what it is to be thankful. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love endures forever. Psalm 136:1 Harvest Blessings, Miss Jen Faith at Home Connection How do we pass on our faith to our children? It requires us to be intentional in walking with Jesus and living out our faith for them to see. It also requires us to be intentional in communicating with our children. This can all seem a bit overwhelming. So what does intentionally showing our children how to live God s way look like? It looks like tiny steps taken every single day. It requires joyfully showing and telling them some of the same things over and over. It is being transparent with them from day one so they not only understand what the goal is, but they will also desire it themselves. It starts with the faith in your own heart. It starts today, whether your children are tiny or taller than you are. Let your children see you read God s Word and pray. Tell your children how you are growing and learning new things. Enjoy being together with other followers of Jesus. Pray with your children every day. Begin today. 10
