To the Editor Goveror Chris Suuu just kissed off every Commoer, Sportswoma ad Sportsma i New Hampshire i favor of the rich ad i-famous who thik they are etitled to their OWN Lake Suapee. Lake Suapee is more tha 10 acres or more public waters ad owed by the State of New Hampshire ad held i trust by the State for public use. That is the law, ad over the last 20 years plus, the high ad mighty of the Lake Suapee elite have challeged by law ad i kid the right of the Public to have their legal use of the Wild Goose Site o Lake Suapee for Public access to the Lake. We are all aware of politics ad big moey ad the isidious disregard for the workig stiffs that work hard ad like to recreate ad occasioally get o the water ad relax; too bad the Sportswoma ad Sportsme are ot treated i a way that politics ad moey are removed from the equatio. I fid it a sad commetary that the Goveror of the State of New Hampshire has totally igored the will ad the rights of the very people that voted for him. North Coutry Notebook Joh Harriga I just three weeks it ll be Labor Day weeked, ad the Lacaster Fairgrouds will be full of parked vehicles, exhibits, the midway, 4-H-ers, ad lots of people who just plai go to say hello. From caves to billowig sheets, ad the bliss of beig a Elder By Joh Harriga Columist REGION- New Hampshire is ot exactly famous for caves. Oh, there are a hadful of fairly well-kow caves, but compared to other states, ot may. What brought this to mid was a coversatio with a fellow heart-rehab participat who lives ear a cave up back beyod Maidstoe Lake, i earby (as i just across the river ) Vermot. I ve always wated to visit that cave. It s o my Bucket List. Oe of New Hampshire s more famous caves is the Paleo-Idia flit mie o Mt. Jasper i Berli. Mied for 9,000 years or more, its sigature material has bee foud i the Mississippi basi, evidece of the trade routes amog the cotiet s first people so log ago. There is a Cave Road i Stratford that makes me woder, ad there is a cave o the easter slope of Magalloway Moutai, i easter Pittsburg. I fact, there are caves all over New Hampshire, but most are quite shallow. Dave Cook ad I were fishig Boudary Pod oe afteroo a few decades ago whe I got sick of it, ad decided to explore the pickup-sticks of huge graite boulders o the pod s easter shore. I foud plety of caves, made so by the sheer jumble, ad oe i particular was quite deep, ad featured scattered piles of aimal boes aroud its etrace. It furthered my curiosity, but ot eough to go spelukig Oe of the simple pleasures i life is to hag out wash, especially whe a breeze is blowig, which is almost always. I was o the phoe Suday with my eldest sister Susa, who lives i Mahatta, ad after exchagig ews from a recet family reuio I said I had to go. I d hug sheets aroud the rooftop deck, ad they were at risk of blowig off to Bagor. There are t may Harrigas left, ad so it was fu to get some of the remats together at a reted house i Bartlett, although remats is ot fair, because the East Coast ad West Coast cousis have sprouted ew geeratios, ad we have t really bee i good touch with the Littleto-area Harrig- as. Susa could t make it because of various ailmets, ad I barely did so, ad was chagried yet pleased Strategies for Livig BY LARRY SCOTT I the New Testamet book of Hebrews, we read: By faith Moses, whe he had grow up, refused to be kow as the so of Pharaoh s daughter. He chose to be mistreated alog with the people of God rather tha to ejoy the pleasures of si for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value tha the treasures of Egypt. Of Hebrew origi, he was the gradso of society s most powerful ad wealthy ma ad everythig life had to offer was available to him. Oe caot imagie the sumptuous life-style that was his to ejoy. The wealth, the power, a life of wie, wome ad sog was his for the takig. But it was ot to be. By the time we fid him o Mt. Siai i persoal coversatio with God, producig the Te Commadmets ad the law that was to guide the atio of Israel, Moses had goe through a traumatic ad life-chagig trasitio. Despite the ease ad comfort available to him as a Egyptia Price, Moses chose istead to be idetified with his Hebrew family. Whe he was 40 years old, thigs fially came to a head. He killed a Egyptia who was abusig oe of the Hebrews ad had to flee for his life. For the ext 40 years, givig up o ay dreams of greatess he might have had, he became a shepherd to his father-i-law i souther Arabia. The pleasures of si, the sumptuous life-style, the educatioal opportuities, the beefits of power all lay behid him. But God had ot CASS INSURANCE INC. For istace, you abadoed him. At 80 years of age, God called o him to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt ito a 40-year jourey through the wilderess of Arabia, to the lad promised to Abraham ceturies before. Moses, who had spet forty years i Egypt thikig he was somebody, spet 40 years shepherdig sheep thikig he was a obody, oly to discover that God ca take a obody ad make a somebody out of him so log as he is willig to pay the price for his success. But that is God s way. He is more tha able ad willig to take us as we are ad where we are ad help make us the best that we ca be. That I believe to be true whether we ackowledge Him or ot. A godly life may demad self-disciplie ad surreder to His will, somethig that ufortuately most people do ot fid the least bit appetizig, but as Moses discovered for himself, it beats aythig a self-cetered ad godless life has to offer. God s pla for our life, however, ca oly be discovered from the iside out. I Jesus Christ we fid eough evidece to substatiate the fact that our faith i God is ot misplaced. It is to our advatage, far above aythig life without God has to offer, to take a step of faith, accept Jesus Christ as the Lord of our life, ad discover for ourselves that the promises of God have ot bee exaggerated; God is as good as His word! Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Paid Advertisemet Edward Joes: Fiacial Focus How Ca You Leave the Legacy You Desire? You may ot see it i the greetig card sectio of your local drugstore, but August is What Will Be Your Legacy Moth. So it s a good time to thik about the type of legacy you d like to leave. Of course, legacy ca mea may thigs. I the broadest sese, your legacy is how you will be remembered by your loved oes, frieds ad the commuities to which you belog. O a practical level, establishig your legacy meas providig your family ad the charitable orgaizatios you support with the resources you d like them to have. Ad that meas you may eed to take the followig actios: create your plas, commuicate your wishes ad review ad update your documets. Let s take a quick look at all these steps: Create your plas. You will wat to work with your legal professioal, ad possibly your tax ad fiacial professioals, too, to draft the plas eeded to fulfill your legacy wishes. These plas may iclude draftig a will, livig trust, health care directive, power of attorey ad other documets. Ideally, you wat these plas to do more tha just covey where you wat your moey to go you wat to impart, to the ext geeratio, a sese of the effort that wet ito buildig the wealth they receive. Without such a appreciatio, your heirs may be less tha rigorous i retaiig the tagible legacies you ve left them. Commuicate your wishes. It s importat to commuicate your legacy-related wishes to your family members as early as possible. By doig so, you ca hopefully avoid upleasat surprises ad hurt feeligs whe it s time for your estate to be settled ad you ll also Eclipse FROM PAGE A1 O March 7,1970, a total solar eclipse o the East Coast was memorialized i the Carly Simo sog You re So Vai, whe she sag about a former wealthy lover who flew to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the su. The last solar eclipse of ay kid i New Eglad however, was a partial eclipse, sometimes techically called a aular eclipse, which occurred i May of At that time the moo did t block the etire su but passed before it, leavig a halo of light aroud the perimeter. As luck will have it, we ll get to ejoy aother solar eclipse i April of 2024 though. This time we ll be very close to the path of totality, which will pass ortheast from Texas ad reach across orther Vermot ad New Hampshire. That s goig to be huge, said let people kow what tasks, if ay, they eed to perform. For example, if you re choosig a family member to be the executor of your estate, or if you re givig someoe power of attorey over your fiacial or health-related matters, they should be prepared. Update your documets. Durig your life, you may well experiece ay umber of chages ew marriage, ew childre, opeig a family busiess, ad so o. You eed to make sure your legal documets ad fiacial accouts reflect these chages. For example, if you ve remarried, you may wat to chage the beeficiary desigatios o your IRA, 401(k) ad other retiremet accouts if left utouched, these desigatios may eve supersede the istructios left i your will. Ad the directios i life chose by your grow childre may also dictate chages i your will or livig trust. I ay case, it s a good idea to review all your legacy-related documets periodically, ad update them as eeded. I additio to takig the above steps, you also eed to protect the fiacial resources that go ito your legacy. So, whe you retire ad begi takig fuds from your IRA, 401(k) ad other retiremet accouts, make sure your withdrawal rate is sufficiet for your livig expeses, but ot so high that it evetually jeopardizes the amouts you plaed to leave to your family or to your preferred charities. A fiacial professioal ca help you determie the withdrawal rate appropriate for your situatio. With careful plaig, ad by makig the right moves, you ca create the type of legacy you desire oe that ca beefit your loved oes far ito the future. Bak. However, oce that was cleared, I parked i my ormal spot, oe of the Bosto Uiversity garages ad walked over David Ortiz Bridge to the ballpark. Off to the city for a little baseball uder the lights gate o Yawkey Way. I radomly bumped ito a couple of local folks, Charlie Hossack ad Heath Keisto, there with their kids celebratig a birthday. Always surprisig to hear someoe call your ame whe your walkig o a radom street i Bosto. For the third time this year i three games, there was a giveaway at the gate, which was cool. I Baltimore, I got a home plate shaped welcome mat with the Orioles logo o it. I Housto, I got a Astros duffel bag, which proved useful o the trip home. Ad Thursday ight I got a Jackie Bradley Jr. bobblehead. The game started out pretty well, as the Sox jumped out to a quick lead i the first iig, capped by a three-ru homer by Rafael Devers. It was great to see the yougster go opposite field for the diger. However, Rick Porcello, who also started whe I saw the Sox i Housto, tried to give the game back to the White Sox by allowig a couple of quick rus. Thakfully, his teammates picked him up, as Mookie Betts had a homer over the Moster ad Adrew Beitedi had a couple of doubles ad the Sox built a 9-5 lead. Porcello was lifted i the sixth ad the bullpe was perfect from there, with Ferado Abad, Heath Hembree, Addiso Reed, Matt Bares ad Brado Workma shuttig the door. The biggest issue I had came whe I was leavig. I usually head out of the parkig garage, dow Commowealth Aveue ad tur right oto Storrow Drive. However, costructio had Commowealth shut dow before I reached the turoff to Storrow Drive so I had to tur aroud ad make my way back through the Feway traffic before I could get back o the road to home.
