Community Congregational Church United Church of Christ P.O. Box 762 McCall, ID Website: mccallucc.org Rev. Charlottie Havlicak, Pastor October 2015 Volume XXIV Number 10 Stewardship Campaign Begun Our Stewardship campaign for 2016 has begun and will run through the month of October. Letters will be mailed to members and friends of McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ, which include pledge cards to be returned to the church with your pledges for next year. John Hucks is our trustee in charge of stewardship and the theme of this year s campaign is The Power of Kindness. God calls us to use our time and our talents, but we are also urged to give of our substance, returning to God a portion of what has been given to us. Sunday, November 1, will be Loyalty Sunday. This is the day we present our pledges for the support of the 2016 budget. Just as each family needs to know the amount of its income so that financial commitments can be met, our church trustees need to know what we can expect to receive to help us carry forward our mission work and gospel message. On Sunday, December 6, the congregation will participate in a Service of Dedication for the pledges for the year 2016, asking God s blessings as we move into the year. If you do not receive a letter or you need another pledge card, contact the church office. Please prayerfully consider what you can to give in the next year to help the mission of the church go forward.
Pastor s Writings We are called to be witnesses to God s blessings in our lives. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to God s power that is at work within our lives to God be the glory. Ephesians 3:20 The month of October is our stewardship month. A time we each one pray over our pledge and tithe offerings and make decisions regarding our support for this wonderful church and our mission projects. On September 20, we were blessed with eight new members joining our church family. I know deep within my spirit that it is because of our abundance of love and friendliness that this church continues to grow and be a warm and friendly place to come together for worship. It remains our ministry for each one of us to make this house of worship all that it can be all that God calls us to be. We, as a body of believers, can do a great mission work here at home and out into our community through our pledges and tithes. We are called to give back to God as God has given unto us. We have the opportunity during this month of October to celebrate the joy of giving. Some of us are called to sing or play an instrument, some to preach or teach, some have gifts of caring and compassion, all according to the gifts given to us by God. We are still in need for some of you who will give more of your time and talents to help our Sunday School. Thank you to Joy Miller and her teachers for their continued teaching gifts given to our young people. God has gifted some of you for this special ministry. This is one of the most important missions we have nurturing our children and young people. If God is speaking to your heart, please listen to God s voice and respond. In the last twenty years, we have completed many exciting dreams and goals. One reason for our giving of tithes and pledges during this time of stewardship is gratitude love and thanksgiving to God for God s love for us. We are each one thankful for the gift of God s forgiveness and mercy and our individual experiences of God s grace working in our lives. Our gratitude flows more deeply when we realize fully the depths of God s love in our lives. Please pray about your pledge gift and remember that we give because God first gave to (Continued on Page 6)

Let s Get Re-Acquainted David and Leslie Siegle David and Leslie Siegle have lived in McCall for over fourteen years. They met in the San Francisco Bay area and have been married for sixteen years. They have a blended family five adult children and eight grandchildren, with another arriving in seven months. After attending San Francisco State University, where he majored in Motion Picture Filmmaking, David joined the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam. For four summers he was Harbormaster and Program Director at a Young Life camp (The Malibu Club) in British Columbia, Canada. He later co-owned a hunting and fishing retail business for 25 years with his dad and brother in California. David also directed Big Game Fishing Tournaments in Baja, Mexico, for a number of years and guided fishing trips as far north as the Arctic Circle. During that time he also continued to work part-time in the film and television industry, which included working in front of and behind the camera on feature films, commercials and documentaries. He worked with a number of film companies, including Lucas Films, Disney Pictures and Sony Pictures. Ten years prior to retiring and moving to McCall, David was an event producer in California, producing major sporting events, concerts and corporate events at indoor and outdoor venues. He was also hired by the White House to handle their events/speeches in the Bay Area. He has recently written a Christian novel that is an adventurous young, innocent love story, with a twist and mystery. It is now in the editing stage. Leslie was born in eastern Idaho, spending her younger years in St. Anthony. After living in Ontario and Boise, her family moved to San Francisco, where she attended high school and college, studying business and accounting. She has been a bookkeeper for over 40 years, working for CPAs, construction companies and recently has had a limited number of clients in McCall. She enjoys hiking, walking, gardening, cooking and boating with David. She fulfilled a life-time dream in 2003 by walking a marathon in Boise and in 2009 a half-marathon in San Antonio, Texas. She is an avid reader, sometimes reading a couple of books in a week. Both David and Leslie take pleasure in traveling, and do so whenever they have the oppor- (Continued on Page 5)
Neighbors In Need Offering To Be Received On Sunday, October 11, we will receive our Neighbors In Need offering. This is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network, Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. The 2015 theme for NIN is Unexpected Places. Please be in prayer about what you can give to help with this mission outreach of the church. Oktoberfest Party Planned An Oktoberfest party is being planned for the church family on Saturday, October 24. It will be held in the big lodge at Pilgrim Cove Camp. Brats and sauerkraut will be furnished by the church and the remainder of the meal will be potluck. People are welcome to bring their own beverage. A sign-up sheet will be circulated for those who would like to attend. Make plans to share in this time of fun, food and fellowship with the church family. David and Leslie Siegle (Continued from Page 4) tunity. The Siegles are starting a new journey in their lives at the end of October. They are relocating to Folsom, California (the foothills of the Sierra Mountains), to live closer to family and especially being closer to the nine grandchildren! Also, David has some health issues that make the winters difficult to deal with. This is a bittersweet move since they love McCall, their friends here, and they will miss their church family! However, they also believe that change can be healthy and exciting as they write the next chapter in their lives. The Siegles joined the church in March 2004.
Dena Holland and Robert Hatvani To Perform A classical music concert with contemporary insight and edge and live painting or sketching will be held Saturday, October 17, at at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ. Featured in the concert will be mezzo-soprano Dena Holland, along with pianist Robert Hatvani. They will perform works by Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Dvorak, Nin, and others, along with a short dramatic piece by Idaho s own internationally recognized composer, Daniel J. Bukvich. During the concert, artist Nettie Kaye Williams will join on some pieces, drawing or painting as the musicians perform, her work being informed and colored by the music. Dena Holland is a native of Riggins, Idaho. She has performed with the Washington-Idaho Symphony and is the winner of numerous awards. She is a 2015 finalist for the national competition, The American Prize in Art Song and a semi-finalist in opera. Robert Hatvani is a native of the Ukraine and has won many awards in Eastern Europe as well as in the United States and has concertized as a soloist, in ensembles, and as an accompanist. Locally he has performed piano solos with both the Boise State University Symphony and the Treasure Valley Symphony Orchestra. He is director of piano at Treasure Valley Community College and also teaches privately. Nettie Kaye Williams has been painting professionally and teaching art since Her works include several commissioned portraits of Nobel Laureate scientists for the California Institute of Technology and has also painted the commissioned portrait of El Presidente, the two-time National Dressage horse and its rider. This is a free concert, but donations will be accepted. Pastor s Writings (Continued from Page 2) us. As God is faithful, so we are also faithful to the ministry of this wonderful church. 7 Recital To Feature Opera Idaho The Second Sunday Six recital for October will be presented by members of Opera Idaho. For forty years under various names Opera Idaho has presented opera in Boise and throughout Idaho and is currently the only professional company of its kind in the state. While professional guest artists from throughout the United States are often brought in to perform lead roles, the backbone of Opera Idaho is its Resident Company, which consists of the best local artists. Opera Idaho has active educational and outreach programs which take opera to area schools, and the Opera Idaho Children s Chorus, which was formally founded in The recital will be held on Sunday, October 11, at 6 p.m. at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ.
