Charlottie Havlicak, Pastor February 2018 Volume XXVII Number 2 Lenten Meals and Studies To Be Held Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The Lenten Season is a time of renewing our commitment to follow the pathway of Jesus. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. It is a time of simple meals of soup and bread to feed our bodies and a short study to feed our souls. This year s Lenten study at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ will focus on the body of Christ and how we can be His hands, feet, mouth, ears, eyes and heart to those around us. It will be led by Pastor Char. Lenten meals will be held each Wednesday, beginning February 21, and continuing through March 21. At 5:30 p.m. a meal of soup and bread will be enjoyed, followed by the study at 6:15 p.m. A sign-up sheet is being circulated for those who would like to help with the meal. Everyone is encouraged to join in this time of learning and fellowship as we prepare for Easter.

(Malachi 3:6) A small child offered this simple prayer: God bless mommy and daddy, my sister and brother, and dear God, take care of yourself because if anything happened to You, we re all sunk. Indeed, we would be. But isn t it wonderful that we know that nothing can happen to God. God is always our source of strength, because we are assured that God does not change. God assures us over and over, I am the same, yesterday, today and forever. I change not! We live in a world of change, our lives are often like roller coasters. One day we are up and the next day we are down. The changeless nature of God is not only a source of comfort, but a source of peace. God is holy, God is consistent in forgiveness, grace, mercy and love. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. May we know that constant unchanging love of Christ in our lives today, is my prayer for each of us. As we enter the Lenten season, it becomes a time to nurture our inner life. It is the time when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus, but also to explore the mystery of the death and resurrection that constantly takes place within each of us. Lent is an occasion for us to journey with Christ into tomorrow. For we never walk with Christ long but what the dawn will break, the sun will shine through and hope becomes a reality. On Sunday, February 18, during our worship service, we will celebrate the Service of Ashes. During this service we will be reminded that as we travel from ashes to ashes and dust to dust, God holds us in loving hands and breathes Spirit into us, creating, shaping and enlivening us every day. As we enter this Lenten Season, we prepare ourselves for the wonder of the Easter Season. We will again be sharing Lenten meals of soup and bread each Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., beginning on February 21. We will engage in a special study called The Body of Christ. Week by week, we as God s people, who are the Body of Christ in God s world today, will study and meditate on the human body with which our Lord first brought God s saving (Continued on Page 6)

4 In Memory and Honor Robert Bob Franklin DeBord, 84, passed away December 26, Born July 1, 1933 in Fruitland, Idaho, Bob was the best you could ask for in a human being. He was kind, honorable, hardworking, giving, and loyal. He had a sparkle in his eye and ready smile to pass around especially if it came with a bit of wit, a good story, and a wink or two. Bob was the youngest of three boys, however their family lost his middle brother, Jimmy, when Bob was just a toddler. In 1937 the family moved to Payette where Bob's mother and father ran DeBord Construction and helped grow Payette, building by building. From houses to churches to bank buildings and factories, the family business touched every corner of the county and beyond. At Payette High School Bob focused his efforts on sports and charming just about anyone who crossed his path. He was proud to have played baseball with the likes of Harmon Killebrew and Denny Barber both who Bob DeBord played professional ball. Bob parlayed his membership in the High School ROTC to a stint in the Army, where he proudly served his country at bases in California, Colorado and Germany. Upon his return he headed north to the University of Idaho, where from day one to his last day he was a Vandal through and through. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. In 1959, Bob met Anne Keim of Nampa. Six weeks later they were engaged and six months after that they were married. This past July they celebrated 58 years as husband and wife. Bob and Anne soon expanded the family with a son, Chris, in A few years later, they relocated to Payette where they became partners in the local Barger-Mattson Auto Salvage dealership. A few months later, another son, Eric, arrived. It was Anne resumed her teaching career and Bob (Continued on Page 5)

5 Bob DeBord (Continued from Page 4) dedicated himself to managing the growing business. Bob was a member of the Payette First United Methodist Church, an avid gardener, and a 50+ year member of the Elks. Bob loved golfing and skiing and was instrumental in the development of Scotch Pines Golf Course in Payette and was an early season pass holder at Brundgage Mountain in McCall. He and Anne spent many weekends at the family cabin on the lake in McCall teaching their boys to ski, fish, golf, pick huckleberries, and cut wood! Once their boys made their way north to the University of Idaho, Bob and Anne redoubled their Vandal Spirits and remained season ticket holders for Vandal Football games for many years. In anticipation of their golden years they built their golf cottage on the course in McCall in the early 1990's, doing much of the work themselves. It was here that they spent their summers for the last 20+ years, hosting friends and family and making the most of every day. Bob and Anne became members of McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Bob's life with two sons was full, but he was thrilled to welcome, and loved dearly, his sweet daughter-in-law Fafa, of whom he was so immensely proud. A grandson and granddaughter rounded out the tribe and Bob could not have loved them more. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 58+ years, Anne, his son Chris DeBord of Boston, son and daughter-in-law, Eric DeBord and Fafa Alidjani and grandchildren Kian DeBord and Ayla DeBord, all of Boise, brothers-in-law Don (Ann) Keim and Ken (Priscilla) Keim, sister-in-law Mary DeBord, along with numerous special nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Gerry DeBord and Mary Fretwell DeBord, his two brothers Don DeBord and Jimmy Ransom, sisters-in-law Vera Keim, Wilma DeBord, and Miriam (Ellis) Albright. A Celebration of Life will be planned for this coming spring in Payette with a summer celebration to follow in McCall. To honor Bob's life and his Vandal Spirit, the family suggests donations be made to the University of Idaho Foundation for the Bob DeBord Memorial Scholarship: University of Idaho Foundation, Inc., 875 Perimeter Dr., MS 3143, Moscow, ID Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity. --Henry Van Dyke

6 The Service of Ashes To Be Held This year Ash Wednesday will be February 14. This is the beginning of Lent and the Easter season. The Service of Ashes at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ will be held Sunday, February 18, during the worship service. If you have not yet done so, please bring your palm branches from last year s Palm Sunday service to the church office so they can be burned to provide the ashes. The feet of Christ to lead the way, the hands of Christ to help and heal, the mouth of Christ to speak God s Word, the ears of Christ to hear our prayers, the eyes of Christ to see our needs, the heart of Christ beating with love. I encourage each one of you dear friends to make plans to come and eat a simple meal together and join this exciting study. New Officers Installed A special ceremony was held during worship on Sunday, January 28, to install the newly elected church officers. This was also a time to honor those officers who were retiring for their years of service. The officers who were installed are Mark Robinson, Moderator; Bobbi Hoover, Treasurer; Helen Eimers, Clerk; Kermit Peterson, Historian; Mark Robinson and Helen Eimers, Financial Secretary and assistant; Linda Hallock, Deacon Chair; Helen Eimers, Marilyn Krahn, Linda Corder, Teresa Mapp, Jet Johnson, Barbara Hershberger, Helen Moore, Dixie Johnson and Pat Thompson, Deacons; Bob Hallock, Trustees Chair; Tom Mapp, David McQuade, Tom Henderson and Gary Thompson, Trutees. Those officers who are retired are Amy Miller, Deacon; Chris Westwater and Kayrene Tanner, Historians; and Diane Graham, Financial Secretary. We are very grateful and proud of those folks who are willing to give of their time and talents to the church and serve so faithfully. * * * * * * * * * * Love is a symbol of eternity. 7 South Hill Guitars To Perform South Hill Guitars will be the featured performers at the February Second Sunday Six recital. Guitarists James Reid and John Paul Shields share a love for South American music, as well as contemporary compositions, and this is reflected in the repertoire of South Hill Guitars. The duo received a grant in 2016 to record their debut CD, Lonesome Coyote. In addition to his activity as a member of South Hill Guitars, James Reid has had a long and extensive solo career. He currently directs the guitar program at the University of Idaho. John Paul Shields plays multiple genres of music, including classical, Latin, folk, and rock. Most recently, his career took him to Peru, where he studied Andean folk guitar music. He also teaches guitar at the Holy Names Center and Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane, Washington. The recital will be held Sunday, February 11, at McCall Community Congregational United Church of Christ. There is no charge for the performance, but donations are welcomed. Birthday Greetings...
