1 Summer Tamuz Av Elul jewih recontructionit congregation jrc New Volume 6 Number 2 Rabbinical Commentary Brant Roen According to Jewih tradition, all law that deal with environmental conervation ultimately tem from two hort Biblical vere: When in your war againt a city you have to beiege it a long time in order to capture it, you mut not detroy (bal tahchit) it tree, wielding the ax againt them. You may eat of them, but you mut not cut them down. Are tree of the field human to withdraw before you in the city? Only tree that you know do not yield food may be detroyed. (Deuteronomy 20:19-20) It a tribute to the ubverive creativity of Talmudic tradition that the rabbi could take a text uch a thi coming from a litany of Biblical law concerning warfare and tranform it into Jewih tradition foundational environmental commandment. Indeed, the age of the Talmud would eventually apply the term bal tahchit ( do not detroy ) to apply to iue far trancending concern over fruit-bearing tree during wartime. The concept bal tahchit eventually became a Jewih legal term referring to the detruction of natural reource on a wide cale, ranging from the wanton killing of animal (Talmud Hullin 7b) to the wating of fuel (Talmud Shabbat 67b). Since the Jewih imperative to care for the environment i Biblically baed, it might come a a urprie to learn that many in the environmental movement blame Biblical tradition for promoting the exploitation of the earth natural reource. I till remember well when Time Magazine promoted environmental concern by chooing Earth a Planet of the Year in In it cover tory, Time made the following pointed obervation: Humanity current predatory relationhip with nature reflect a man-centered world view that ha evolved over the age. Almot every ociety ha had it myth about the earth and it origin. The ancient Chinee depicted Chao a an enormou egg whoe part eparated into earth and ky, yin and yang. The Greek believed Gaia, the earth, wa created immediately after Chao and gave birth to the god. In many pagan ocietie, the earth wa een a a mother, a fertile giver of life. Nature the oil, foret, ea wa endowed with divinity, and mortal were ubordinate to it. The Judeo-Chritian tradition introduced a radically different concept. The earth wa the creation of a monotheitic God, who, after haping it, ordered it inhabitant, in the word of Genei: Be fruitful and multiply, and replenih the earth and ubdue it: and have dominion over the fih of the ea and over the fowl Rabbi Roen can be reached through the JRC office: In cae of emergency, he can be reached at home: where an anwering machine will record your meage if he i out. addre: rabbi@jrc-evanton.org. 2 2 God call proclaim to you, Do not detroy anything! Rabbi Samon Raphael Hirch Board Summary of the air and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. The idea of dominion could be interpreted a an invitation to ue nature a a convenience. Ouch. In fairne, it hould be aid that the key phrae in the above i could be interpreted a. We might ay it i not Biblical tradition per e, but rather a corrupt miinterpretation of the Bible (pecifically the oft-quoted Genei 1:28) we might blame for introducing thi radical new concept. If Genei 1 teache u anything at all, it i that creation i the acred product of a divine proce. In thi context, God doe not imply hand the earth over to humanity o that we may run roughhod over creation a we ee fit. In thi regard, the Torah ue of the term dominion (kivhuha) clearly denote matery a reponibility, not exploitation. Thi point i powerfully driven home by the interpretation of Rabbi Samon Raphael Hirch, who commented on the Deuteronomy vere above by aying that humanity carele wate of God creation i nothing hort of idolatry: Yea, Do not detroy anything i the firt and mot general call of God If you hould now raie your hand to play a childih game, to indulge in enele rage, wihing to detroy that which you hould only ue, wihing to exterminate that which you hould only mater, if you hould regard the being beneath you a object without right, not perceiving God who created them, and therefore deire that they feel the might of your preumptuou mood, intead of uing them only a the mean of wie human activity then God call proclaim to you, Do not detroy anything! In truth, there i no one nearer to idolatry than one who can diregard the fact that creation and it creature are the property of God, who preume alo to have the right, having the might, to detroy them according to a preumptuou act of will. Ye, that one i already erving the mot powerful idol anger, pride, and above all, ego, which in it paion regard itelf a the mater of thing. (Rabbi Samon Raphael Hirch, Horeb, 56: ) A Rabbi Hirh would have it, it i not Wetern religiou tradition, but rather the idolatrou twiting of thi tradition that ha led humanity to it current predatory relationhip with nature. If we do indeed ue nature a a convenience, it i not religion, but rather our own anger, pride, and ego upon which we mut ultimately lay blame. The following i a ummary of Board action in recent month: Approved moving forward with a capital campaign to pay down the mortgage Approved the 2103 Fundraiing Plan ubmitted by the Development Committee Adopted a 2013 policy tating that member may not reerve pecific pace on the memorial culpture Authorized the term to renew the mortgage Held a Board retreat at the Evanton Ecology Center Adopted a new Peronnel Policy Adopted an updated B nai Mitzvah Policy (can be acceed on the JRC webite) Adopted a Board communication policy Reviewed, amended and adopted the budget for the fical year. Voted to deignate JRC a an immigrant welcoming congregation a part of the Chicago Religiou Leaderhip Network, making JRC the firt ynagogue to ign on.

3 3 A Note from Our Cantor Howard Friedland A few year ago, I wrote a newletter article praiing my mom, on the occaion of Mother Day. She wa tickled and touched by it. She ha ince paed away, and my father died 25 year ago. It an odd feeling, a many of you know, to not be buying flower, weater, electric haver, or a tie no one will ever wear for my parent at thi time of year. I ay the feeling i odd becaue, while it i certainly not a happy feeling, neither i it ad. I take time on Mother and Father Day to meditate on my great fortune at having been raied by uch loving and caring parent. I alway ay that the greatet gift parent can give children i to end them into the world with love and the confidence it build. My parent did that for my brother and me. My wife, Terry, and I have done that with our children. My parent alo paed down their value: love of Judaim, the political proce, ervice to your community (the Jewih community and community-at-large), ene of humor, and honety. They paed down their love of tenni, the art, an openne to travel to different place and meeting new people, and of coure, love of Sanford and Son, the 70 TV how my dad and I never mied. (We watched it every Shabbo before going to ervice, and alway laughed until we cried it wa that funny!) Whenever I officiate at a wedding, I alway mention omething that I truly believe: love i a great mytery. We can t explain why it hit u, or the way in which it hit u. It jut doe. Love ha the power to uphold the fallen and heal the ick. The trength of love doe not diminih with time, nor doe it end when thoe who were the object of our love leave thi earth. Anyone who i open to love can receive it or give it anytime. I will repeat thi favorite bleing from one of our b not mitzvah. It i from the Seneca tribe, aid by parent to their children: Thank you for being. A imple declaration of unconditional love that ay, We love you, not for what you have accomplihed, but for who you are. So a happy Mother and Father Day to the parent we love and who love u, unconditionally. May God turn the heart of the parent to their children, and the heart of the children to their parent. And may your houe be called a houe of prayer for all people. Bleed are you, Eternal One, who bring everlating peace. Haftarah bleing, Kol Hanehamah Recontructionit Prayer Book There been a change in the newletter format. To make it eaier for online viewing, the newletter ha been reformatted a a ingle page document with torie running from page-to-page intead of kipping.

Thi year, there are 270 tudent in our religiou chool and 59 children in our early childhood program. During the lat two year, we have accomplihed a great deal at JRC. We began ome new tradition, including Billy Kaplan original folk/rock ervice, A Shabbat Sweet, and monthly community potluck Shabbat dinner at JRC before Friday evening ervice. We combined fundraiing and community-building at Dinner, Donor & Domicile, where JRC member enjoyed dinner or deert in the home of other member. At that event, guet made donation to JRC, while the hot donated the meal or deert. We continued our tradition of high-quality adult education, including clae on a variety of ubject by our Rabbi and by highly regarded academic, a well a more divere program, uch a a viit to the Willow Creek Community Church, a hand-on cla on the art of Jewih paper cutting, and clae on parenting and mindful Jewih living. Our religiou chool, early childhood program and youth group continued to grow and thrive, with increaed participation in 7th and 8th grade, the youth group and the high chool program. We adopted a trategic plan, and our board, committee and tak force are in the proce of implementing the recommendation developed during the planning proce. We refinanced our mortgage at an attractive interet rate, and we have begun a capital campaign to raie fund needed to repay a ignificant portion of our mortgage loan. 5 5 Needing the Egg David Tabak, Incoming Preident It remind me of that old joke you know, a guy walk into a pychiatrit office and ay, hey doc, my brother crazy! He think he a chicken. Then the doc ay, why don t you turn him in? Then the guy ay, I would but I need the egg. I gue that how I feel about relationhip. They re totally crazy, irrational, and aburd, but we keep going through it becaue we need the egg. Woody Allen, Annie Hall JRC... recognize there i no ingle definition to what it mean to be Jewih. JRC ha alway been more than a ynagogue to me ince Denie and I attended former JRC rabbi Arnie Rachli Chanukah/Chritma Dilemma program in Up to thi point, organized Judaim reaction to my engagement to a Lutheran woman could be ummed up in one word: wrong. And yet, here wa a rabbi who wa not only tolerant of the idea of intermarriage, he wa willing to dicu it openly and honetly. JRC welcome and challenge it member by offering a community that i committed to developing a meaningful Jewih exitence for the 21t century and recognize there i no ingle definition to what it mean to be Jewih.
