Affiliated with Jewih Recontructionit Communitie The article below wa originally ed to JRC member when Rabbi Don began hi aociation with JRC at the beginning of July. From Rabbi Don Donald Rooff, Interim Rabbi Word cannot fully expre how honored and excited I am to join you thi year a your Interim Rabbi. I have heard JRC referred to a a flaghip Recontructionit congregation and have peronally experienced what an exceptional acred community JRC ha been and continue to be. I have been epecially impreed by the dedication and expertie of the lay leaderhip, the Jewih commitment and level of involvement of the memberhip, and the whole-hearted and loving commitment of JRC amazing taff. In addition, JRC heritage i inpiring. I admire the value of the ynagogue: dedication to ocial jutice, commitment to Jewih learning and intellectual life, liturgical innovation, and o much more. It i clear that JRC member own their Judaim! The Interim Rabbi help a congregation in thee main area: The Interim a Synagogue Rabbi Firt and foremot, I will erve a your rabbi. Patoral care i my highet priority. In addition, I will be leading ervice with my new cherihed friend, Cantor Howard and offering divrei Torah. I will teach clae for adult and religiou chool and pre-chool tudent, and be the rabbinic preence of the congregation in the wider community. I appreciate the challenge of working with an unfamiliar rabbi for Bar and Bat Mitzvah, wedding, time of illne, and funeral. I will work with you to make each life cycle event peronal and meaningful. I plan to hot a get to know you meeting with B nai Mitzvah familie a oon a i feaible. Along with my life-long ynagogue involvement, my 34 year in the congregational rabbinate, and my litening kill, I bring with me my peronal experience of celebration, lo, and growth, including the joy and challenge of raiing our four very different, now adult, children. Pleae do not heitate to call me for your rabbinic need at the ynagogue or on my cell: Affirmation of Synagogue Tradition A key quetion for the Interim Rabbi i: What are important tradition, value, and enibilitie of the ynagogue that hould be affirmed? My goal a Interim Rabbi will be to provide continuity, to maintain the important tradition of the congregation, and to articulate and honor what JRC member cherih about their community. (Continued on next page)

2 2 A Veel of Congregational Tranition The Interim Rabbi erve a more than a bridge or place-holder between a previou ettled rabbi and the next ettled rabbi. It i difficult both for the rabbi and the congregant for a new, hopefully long-term rabbi immediately to follow a rabbi of long and ditinguihed tenure who ha had a particular tyle, ha et a particular tone, and who ha found a place deep in the heart of congregation. It i the miion of an Interim Rabbi to aborb the dicomfort, diappointment, and even anger that are typical and neceary apect of mourning a previou rabbi. The ame word coming from a different mouth i a change; my job i to be that different mouth. A key quetion for the Interim Rabbi i: What are important tradition, value, and enibilitie of the ynagogue that hould be affirmed? My goal a Interim Rabbi will be to provide continuity, to maintain the important tradition of the congregation, and to articulate and honor what JRC member cherih about their community. Viion for the Future The year with an Interim Rabbi alo provide ynagogue that wih a time to explore idea for program, innovation for worhip, and experience of Jewih learning. Synagogue innovation i a proce which hould be enitive and incluive. I am available for you a a reource for peronal quetion about Jewih life and, a the ynagogue would like, for learning from new experience in the Jewih world. I pray that our year together will be a time of peronal and congregational growth, of intropection and healing, of rededication and renewal, with friendhip formed and friendhip deepened. I am looking forward to working with each of you to learn about your idea and ideal, your hope and hurt, a we bring the congregation together with renewed hope and viion for the future. Again, pleae call me if I can be of help to you, if you have a family member with a pecial need, or if you know of a congregant whom I hould contact. I believe we are here to erve God by erving each other. Pleae know that I am here for you! Rabbi Rooff can be reached through the JRC office: In cae of emergency, he can be reached on hi cell phone at addre: DRooff@jrc-evanton.org

3 3 During thi challenging year we all grew and learned and were trengthened by each other talent. A Note from our Cantor Howard Friedland Firt thing firt: It i my great pleaure to welcome Rabbi Don Rooff and hi wife, Fran, to the JRC community! Rabbi Don i impreive on many level. He called me week in advance of hi firt viit with u to introduce himelf and to get the prayer melodie that we ue. Once here, he did all that anyone poibly could to learn JRC culture. Don warmth, widom, ene of humor, and hi ability to liten will erve u very well thi year. My congratulation to all the member of the earch committee who made uch a fine election. I would alo like to welcome our new Early Childhood Director, Claudia Rozenberg! Claudia i a very warm and relaxed peron. You ll love getting to know her, and we are grateful that the Early Childhood Program i being turned over to uch a terrific ucceor. Thank, alo, to the entire congregation for all of your help and aitance during thi challenging year. We all grew and learned and were trengthened by each other talent. Now to talk about pet! In Hebrew, the term for animal i ba alei chaim or mater of life. How intereting that i. Epecially o, ince our on, Ben, found a tray cat living on our deck two week ago and adopted it. Our adopted on, Jerry the Cat, i now living in our houe, jut a Ben went off to camp for eight week. Jerry i not only a mater of life, but a mater of the good life, he now ha three quare a day and live in a climate-controlled environment. He alo leep on a Serta mattre with my wife and me, and our poodle, Choco. Any animal lover know there i much we can learn from watching and living with animal. I watched Choco, who ha lived with u for eight year, become the model of compromie, a he hare her houe and human with the cat. The cat i very loving. I have come to be quite fond of him, and I m not a cat peron. Choco and Jerry are ba alei chaim becaue they live for the eential. They want a roof over their head and food in their tomach. They want omeone to love who will love them back and how them affection. A far a meaningful work goe, I don t know about you, but I think leeping 18 hour a day i a lofty goal! Baruch he emar al habriot. Bleed i the one who act kindly toward all creature. Cantor Friedland can be reached through the JRC office: In cae of emergency, he can be reached at home: where an anwering machine will record your meage if he i out. addre: cantor@jrc-evanton.org. It not too late!! Click here and check thi out! Then contact Danny Wallenberg to join the JRC choir!

4 4 Now i the time for u to decide who we want to be and what we want in a rabbi. Thi i a tremendou opportunity... Preident Meage Robin Trilling What a difference a year make. Lat ummer I could not have imagined what JRC would look like in a year, much le that I would be Preident of the Board. July begin our new memberhip year and I hope you will join me and hundred of our JRC community in renewing your memberhip. There never been a better time to be a member of JRC. We are approaching the month of Elul, a time for intropection and a time to review our deed and piritual progre over the pat year, and prepare for the upcoming Day of Awe of Roh Hahanah and Yom Kippur. JRC ha jut been through a challenging year, and I believe we can all take pride in how our community pulled together. The true tet of any organization i how it repond when the chip are down. And we can have faith in our repone to lat year event becaue we were guided by our miion: to create an engaged Jewih community that practice a Judaim reponive to the time and culture in which we live. I have been a member of variou group political, artitic and ocial and I know that without clear miion, viion and goal, they are unlikely to ucceed. Becaue JRC had a miion and a trategic plan, we were able to navigate our way through a tumultuou year. Baed on what we learned in the pat year from member meeting, forum for the future and our member urvey, we fine-tuned our trategic plan. I know that a number of current and former JRC member are taking a wait and ee approach to renewing their memberhip. They are waiting to ee who JRC elect a it long-term rabbi before they renew or rejoin. But I ay why wait? Now i the time for u to decide who we want to be and what we want in a rabbi. Thi i a tremendou opportunity, o be part of thi acred converation, and help anwer thee important quetion. Not ure about renewing or rejoining? Talk to omeone talk to Rabbi Don, to omeone on the memberhip committee, to Jill, or to me. I epecially encourage you to reach out to Rabbi Don at drooff@jrc-evanton.org. A our interim rabbi, it i hi role to upport and encourage our congregation during thi year of tranition a we trive to form a clear viion of who we are. I ve heard JRC referred to a the congregation where you come a you are, and thi offer u the opportunity to expre our Judaim in our own way. Pleae keep thi in mind a you conider your own memberhip. Not only that, but encourage any friend who are hul hopping to join JRC. Let them experience what it feel like to be part of the converation a we craft our viion for the future. At the rik of eeming ridiculou, let me ay that the true revolutionary i guided by great feeling of love. Che Guevara Thi i one of my favorite quote. I don t mean to imply that I am a true revolutionary, but rather that I am guided by great feeling of love. Love for JRC, love for the member of thi community, and love for creating a afe place where we peak and liten to each other with Kavod: dignity, repect, and honor. In Aramaic, the word Elul mean earch. Elul i a time to earch our heart. So, thi Elul, I offer a bleing a we open our heart and our mind to one another. Imagine your JRC our JRC a congregation where we treat one another with repect and honor a we recognize the divine in each other.

Learning and talking about the many innovative initiative bring energy into our plan for the new year and I am excited to hare them with you. Thi i an excerpt from a pot by Rabbi Eric Bram, z l. What I like about it i how it ground me and remind me what it i we re really teaching and why. Rabbi Arnold Wolf taught me a a kid not to believe thing I know are fale, o when I hand my b nai mitzvah kid their parahot, I tell them the following True thing: The Torah wa written by your great great grandfather/mother. It i not a book or five book (or ix). The Torah i a letter written by omeone in your family a long time ago who did not know you by name, but knew you would come along. It wa written by omeone who loved you and wanted you to be from omewhere; to have ome idea of what it i all about; to have ome emblance of Faith and Optimim and Struggle and Meaning. The Torah i an inheritance, not a book. When you read Torah, you don t read it like Tom Sawyer, or Archie comic. You read Torah like a fragile, handwritten letter addreed to you (uing your Hebrew name on the envelope), which you found in your grandparent attic. You read it, not with your eye, but with your heart. It a family treaure that God and Moe and one hundred generation of your family made ure you got. Although September eem a long way off, I know by the time you read thi, you ll be buying backpack, neaker and chool upplie for the tart of a new year. By thi time in the ummer, the hallway are too quiet and too dreary: there are no cat-off jacket trewn on the floor outide the office, and no voice echoing in the tairwell. Following our long-term plan, the JRC Garden prioritie are two Serviceberry tree, a Redbud tree, and two Alpine current buhe. We will alo take tock of the perennial in the garden currently. Some of them may need to be divided and tranplanted into area that are relatively empty. And we will plant the pring-flowering bulb that we ordered (wholeale!) during the JRC Bulb Sale. Where i the money coming from for thee plant material? The bulb are wholeale, and the cot i more than covered by the profit of our bulb ale. There will probably be enough in the budget to cover the Alpine current and Serviceberrie, becaue the work the Garden Hand have been doing ave the high cot of a landcape contract. However, to buy and plant a Redbud about the ame ize a the two exiting Redbud will cot more than planting buhe or Serviceberrie. We are hoping that people will donate money to the JRC Garden in memory of Syd Lieberman, who tilled the garden of hi own life, Jewih tradition, and JRC to create organic torie that delighted u all. If we get enough donation, we will be able to plant a Redbud tree in our front yard.
