2 2 A Note from Our Cantor Howard Friedland Thi i the eaon when we are told to remember that we were lave in the land of Egypt, but what do I know about being a lave? I wa raied in an upper middle cla home in Springfield, Illinoi where Jew have lived quite comfortably ince the middle nineteenth century. We lived a Jewih life centered around Jewih intitution. Not becaue we had to; we choe to live that way. Jew lived in every neighborhood, fancy and modet. There wa no blatant anti-emitim, no croe burned on our lawn, no lur at chool. Young people... will jut be Jewih in ome new way. Click here and check thi out! Then contact Danny Wallenberg to join the JRC choir! My European-born grandparent experience wa quite different. Even my American-born parent felt like outider during their formative year, facing univerity quota, job quota, and the like. Jew of their generation were drawn together and bonded for the very reaon that they were outider. Jew belonged to Jewih intitution becaue, I imagine, they had an interet in Jewih life. They alo belonged to Jewih intitution becaue they couldn t gain entrance to non-jewih intitution. American Jew who are my age or younger didn t have that experience. Thi poe a quetion: If we do not feel the connection to being lave, or an approximation of that life, what keep u upporting Jewih intitution or being Jewih at all? So much of Jewih olidarity wa U againt them or Jew againt everyone ele. Now, we are the victim of our own ucce. We have gained admiion into the non-jewih world. We work, live, and tudy in every phere of ociety. I m fifty-five year old. Many Jew my age till feel an obligation to upport ynagogue, even if they don t utilize them o much. Jew who are twenty-five year old find Judaim in bowling alley, bar, park, and other alternative venue, which i great! Young people are alway on the cutting edge and bring needed new blood and idea to the table. I don t think they will top being Jewih. They will jut be Jewih in ome new way. I m willing to bet that when they hit their thirtie and tart familie they jut might be driving car pool to ynagogue religiou chool. But if that i to happen, we can no longer offer the Judaim of we were lave or u againt them. It will be that Judaim bring joy and meaning to our live, and we want to pa that down to the next generation who jut might find that appealing. Cantor Friedland can be reached through the JRC office: In cae of emergency, he can be reached at home: where an anwering machine will record your meage if he i out. addre: cantor@jrc-evanton.org. JRC preent Shir Aviv: A Celebration of Spring in Muic Sunday, April 19, 3pm Featuring JRC Adult and Junior Choir with member of the JRCymphony Highlighting a brand new Bob Applebaum piece: Two by Two Alo by Applebaum: Shalom, vhalom, vhalom And by Choir Director Danny Wallenberg: The Niggun Thi i a free event. 3 3 A I think of the lat two year, and thi pat year epecially, one number come to mind 258. Thank You to Shabbat Oneg Hot Erev Shabbat: Sara Polonky, Melia Mizel and Mike Edward, Debbie and Keith Porter, Diana and Jim McNeli, The Brooke Family, The Meller-Underhill Family, Bonnie and Ron Silverman, Carolyn Shapiro and Joh Karh, Paula Kamen and David Beazley Shabbat Minyan: Helga Lowe-Harper, Ether Kaplan, Ruth Wenger & Jonathan Markowitz, Marie & Gerry Davidon, Ilene Lebovitz, Rebecca Rubin, Nina Rakin, Judith Helzner, Cookie & Al Goldberg, Ellie Routtenberg Welcome New Member Sonia Yaco Tuche Afn Tich David Tabak, Preident Thi will be my lat newletter column a JRC preident, but, of coure, not the lat time you hear from me. Come July, JRC will have a new preident and, of coure, my family and I remain in it for the long haul for the community that ha given u o much. A I think of the lat two year, and thi pat year epecially, one number come to mind 258. Two hundred and fifty eight. Before you tart paging through your Big Book of Gematria or even turning to Google for the eoteric meaning of 258, let me explain. Two hundred and fifty eight i the number of Yaher Koach ticker I have ditributed in the lat fical year that began July At the end of each board meeting, we go around the table to nominate JRC member or employee for a Yaher Koach (Good job!) ticker for ome good deed they did on behalf our community. A you would expect with a congregation a divere a JRC, thee good deed take many form: greeting people on Erev Shabbat, leading worhip ervice, working in a oup kitchen, helping clean up after our two flood, even marching with Doctor King in Selma fifty year ago. Each peron who i nominated for a YK ticker i ent a note of thank and a nifty YK ticker, uitable for ticking. Some intrepid volunteer have taken to decorating their notebook or laptop with the ticker a if they were on a college football team or a world tour. If you ee omeone porting a YK ticker, pleae thank them for their effort on behalf of our hared community. But in addition to thanking people for their volunteer effort, each one of thoe 258 Yaher Koach ticker i a vote of confidence in the future of our community. I certainly will not minimize the trauma we experienced a a community when Rabbi Roen reigned. I will not reviit thi ubject at thi time, a I, too, am till contemplating how we arrived at the unfortunate circumtance and what we collectively or I individually might have done to either prevent or minimize the pain. That i for a future column or a quiet converation. No matter what each of u think about what happened to u a a community, I hope you agree that, to paraphrae Mark Twain, report of JRC demie have been greatly exaggerated. Each one of thoe 258 YK ticker attet to the trength and vitality of our community. A I wrap up thi column and tart to wrap up my term a JRC preident, I am grateful for the honor you betowed upon me. It ha been the mot meaningful and challenging two year of my life. There are people too numerou for me to thank. They have rolled up their leeve and done the hard work when it needed to be done, whether in full view of the community or in private. They were alway available to provide age advice. And when I needed a hug, there wa a urfeit of arm to embrace me. For all you have done, I offer you my perpetual gratitude and a YK ticker. We have much work to do together over the next couple of year. Given our many committed and talented member, I have no doubt that JRC will ucceed in way wondrou which we cannot imagine today. I look forward to continuing our hared journey together. See you at Shul. B halom, David
