1 New CCS Regitered Charity Follow u: Deigned and printed in houe by The Catholic Children Society New Home! Artit impreion of the new building! Twenty Eight year ago (1986) Sr Margaret Mary Bannerton DC. opened the CCS St. Franci Family Centre in Flora Cloe, Tower Hamlet. She did thi a he noticed jut how many familie were aking for ocial help from the local church. The centre building appeared nothing too pecial; not much pace indoor or out, quite old already and in need of frequent repair. It had een previou ue a a Working Men Club, hoted Irih dancing and other community activitie, but after 28 year of gloriou ervice to the local community the building at Flora Cloe i no more. It wa demolihed in May to make room for purpoe built flat for the elderly. However, for the lat 12 month building work a few hundred yard away have been gathering pace. The ite of the Holy Family primary chool wa being tranformed, firt with temporary claroom erected, then the demolition of the old chool and finally the building of a brand new chool newly named Our Lady and St Joeph. With it come the new home for CCS St Franci Family Centre. Alo moving into the new chool will be taff and pupil of Our Lady Primary School in Limehoue. Over the year, St Franci, ha uccefully poitioned itelf a a leading provider of community ervice in the area. A we are part of the Catholic and wider local community, it wa decided that we hould eek to move to the ame ite a the chool in order to encourage ynergie and greater community ervice proviion. One way would be to demontrate how early year community upport and intervention combined with on ite chool counelling proviion for older pupil can improve learning and community coheion commitment. Placing St Franci on the ite of Our Lady and St Joeph Primary School i a new miletone in our development. CCS, in partnerhip with the Diocean Education Service, the chool governor and the parih, eek to enhance and enrich our hared goal which i: The glory of God i a human being fully alive. St. Irenaeu. The Centre together with the School will be formally opened by Cardinal Vincent Nichol in March 2015.

Our abiding memorie are of a family man with an outtanding belief in hi faith, commitment to children and familie in need and the love he had for hi own family and friend. Hi ignificant voluntary work included involvement with the Britih Aociation for Adoption and Fotering which panned 16 year, whilt during the 1990 he wa a trutee of both the Children Legal Centre and the Family Right Group, a national voluntary organiation that advocate for the welfare of children who are in contact with ocial ervice from a family-centred perpective. He wa alo the Vice-Chairperon of the National Youth Advocacy Service. The etho of all three organiation reflected Jim belief in the principle which underpin the UN Convention on the Right of the Child, particularly that children need are paramount in any deciion made about them and that their wihe and feeling hould alo be taken into account in uch deciion. A Chief Executive Officer of the Catholic Children Society (Wetminter) between 1990 and 2009, Jim had changed the focu of our organiation from mainly family placement to a range of innovative community ervice; including work with Irih Traveller, family centre baed work with diadvantaged children and familie in area of high poverty, child and adolecent pychotherapy, counelling and play-therapy ervice delivered in chool and in non-tatutory etting. None of u want to think about our own mortality but remembering thoe le fortunate in your will can lead to one lating memory - a life changed for the good by your kindne. Jim wa a man of integrity and jutice. He not only talked but he alo acted with integrity and jutice; both within the public domain and the more private phere of hi family and local community. Married to hi wife Diane for over forty year, he wa a father of three children and a grandfather of four. For thoe of u who worked with Jim, it wa a privilege. Hi faith wa affirming and underpinned all that he did, he will be orely mied. 3 CCS New The Trutee, The Chairman, The Old boy of the Cruade of Recue and D Day! One of our Trutee; Victoria Nichol, together with her huband Richard, from St Mary Church in Hamptead did their bit to take part in the 70th anniverary of the D-Day landing of 6th June They drove one of the Willy Jeep ued in the famou landing back to the Normandy beach on which it landed. The Willy MB U.S. Army Jeep wa manufactured from 1941 to The mall four-wheel drive utility vehicle are conidered the iconic World War II Jeep, and inpired many other light utility vehicle ued in warfare. Setting out from a rainy Hamptead on 3rd June the journey to Normandy had a particular ignificance for Victoria, whoe father, a Royal Marine, landed on Sword beach. It wa the firt time that he had been to Normandy to ee where her father fought. A mall crowd gathered at St Mary Church where our Chair of Trutee Mgr. Phelim Rowland, parih priet and formerly Vicar General of the Army between 2002 and 2006, bleed the Nichol and the jeep before it hitoric journey acro the channel to join with the veteran remembering the event of 70 year ago and their colleague who made the ultimate acrifice for a free Europe. Many old boy from the Cruade of Recue took part in military operation during the war, including Brendan McGurk who landed on the Normandy beache on D-Day. Sadly he wa killed within 12 hour of landing. Jame Jimmy Langrell erved a a Sergeant Oberver (Navigator) with the RAF. In January 1943 following a Lancater bombing raid over Hamburg Jimmy wa reported miing. Several month paed before official confirmation wa received adviing of hi death and hi burial ome 60 mile from Hamburg itelf. The Korean War followed on quickly from the end of World War II where another Cruade old boy Lionel Eex (pictured above) erved with ditinction. Injured and captured by the Chinee at the battle of Imjin River, Lionel wa tortured but gave no information other than name, rank and erial number. He eventually ecaped and wa found by a patrol from a Greek Battalion. After month in a Japanee and later Englih hopital, he recovered to give a peech introducing the King on Chritma day We alute all thoe who erved. They hall grow not old, a we that are left grow old: Age hall not weary them, nor the year condemn. At the going down of the un and in the morning, We will remember them. Much of the reearch for the above piece wa conducted by one of our Cruade of Recue Old Boy; Norman Taylor who wa formerly alo reident at Blaidon Hall. We were addened to learn that Norman departed thi life for higher ervice on 18th June Wartime Memorie St. Joeph wa a quiet backwater. Very little of what wa going on in the world filtered through to the boy. There wa limited acce to the radio and programme that we were permitted to liten to were carefully elected. What we had been told in the month leading up to the declaration of war with Germany wa that the German air force would unleah terror raid on London and the other major citie in Britain and thi would caue thouand of caualtie. We had everal rehearal of what we were to do when the air raid iren ounded and we learned to march quickly to our allotted place in the cellar. We received our ga mak and were taught how to ue them if we had a ga attack. The air raid iren ounded almot immediately after the declaration of war on that unny Sunday morning in September 1939 and 150 terrified boy and taff, quickly made their way to the cellar expecting intant annihilation. It wa a fale alarm and we emerged into the playground thankful that we had urvived what we believed wa the firt German air raid. In September 1939 time wa et at double Britih ummer time and darkne did not decend until 9 o clock in September. On 6th September we had gone to bed at our uual time of even o clock and becaue of the daylight we were unable to leep. The boy became retle and a with all young boy it wan t long before, noticing that the duty Siter wa no where to be een, they began to make their way to the fire ecape to admire the view acro London. There had been ome limited German air activity during the afternoon and the ound of the iren had ent u running to the cellar for helter. Once again although we heard gunfire and the droning of German aircraft overhead they quickly paed u by. The boy who had made their way to the fire ecape oon came running back to the dormitory. Come quickly they cried, it look a if there i a big fire omewhere in London. I wa among the group of boy who made their way to the fire ecape to ee what the caue of all the excitement wa. When I reached the fire ecape platform, I could not believe what I wa eeing. The ky wa a bright crimon colour. Smoke wa riing high into the ky. London appeared to be burning from end to end. Burting anti aircraft hell could be een exploding in the air, the gunner attempting to drive away the attacking bomber. We tood there in awe of what we were witneing. We were brought back to our ene by the ound of approaching aircraft. The local anti aircraft gun tationed nearby opened up to intercept the intruder. We could not move we were o facinated by what we were eeing. Suddenly we heard one of the Siter telling u to come inide and make our way to the cellar before we were killed. It i now ixty eight year ince that gloriou ummer and autumn of The un really did hine every day of that ummer and autumn. It wa the clear kie that enabled the boy of St. Joeph to enjoy witneing hitory in the making. We urvived one the mot dangerou time in the hitory of thi country. Looking back it would eem that very little attention wa paid by outide agencie to enure that we were in afe keeping. Enfield wa attacked on everal occaion. Over 250 of it citizen lot their live and hundred more were caualtie. Norman Tayor
