1 THE HERITAGE HERALD Heritage Christian Church New Hampshire Avenue Silver Spring, MD Phone: (301) Website: Heritage Staff Rev. Annie Smith, Interim Minister Rev. Jim Cole, Associate Minister Charles Worle, Summer Pianist Nancy Gebicke, Executive Assistant Rev. Kathy Kohl, Pastoral Counseling ( ) Volume LII, No. 8 August 2016 P.U.S.H. Many of you liked the story I told on Sunday about the boy and his request for chocolate chip cookies from his mother in the supermarket. The child was relentless in his request. Although he heard NO many times from his mom it did not deter him. He was resolved not to leave that store without his chocolate chip cookies. In Luke 11:9-13 Jesus tells the disciple to ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks the door will be opened. The disciples are told how to access the will of God, and the plan of God for their lives through the Holy Spirit. He was in essence telling them they could not expect to know the will of God without asking. They cannot expect to have access to all God has in store for them just by praying one time but they must P U S H (Pray Until Something Happens) like the little boy in the supermarket. The child knew this was not the time to quit, this was not the time to give up but this was the time to dig his heels in and move that chocolate chip mountain. Church we must believe that this is our season to seek the very face of God until he shines the light from heaven down on us. Whatever you are facing whether a sickness, financial needs, concern for your child, job instability, trouble in your home you have been given the green light to pray to God but not just pray; but keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking until you see the doors open that no man can shut. Pray until you see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are disciples of Christ therefore we have a right to ask; seek and knock at the heart of our heavenly Father for everything we need in life. I want to get to heaven knowing I received God s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, everything my heavenly Father had in store. As your minister I will be persistent in my prayers and request of the Lord. I ask that you join me in praying for increase in every area of the life of the church and in your life that we might continue to be that bright light not only on the corner but in the world. God Bless, Rev. Annie
2 Notes from the Board On Monday, July 18 th, the Board met to discuss the future life of Heritage and ways to rejuvenate our church community. Pastor Jim Cole led a well-attended meeting with information from Allen Harris, our Regional Minister. Some of the ideas presented: joining with other Disciples churches, partnering with the region, adding a more contemporary service, and possibly selling some of our land. The discussion was very lively and robust about ways we can affect change. Because attendance and revenues have been rapidly declining, NOW is the time to make some decisions and act. In that context, as a church family, everyone needs to pray for guidance and discernment about how we can survive and thrive and continue to do the work God has called us to do. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for Monday, August 15 th, at 7:00 p.m. Rev. Allen Harris will join us and all are encouraged to attend. May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 THANK YOU... THANK YOU! Our Annual Picnic on July 10th, was a huge success! Many thanks to Melvin and Jody for the delicious chicken, to all who came, brought food, setup, cleaned up, and helped in any way, and for the special fellowship we all enjoyed! 3 From the Elders -- Lori Kaufman, Kristy Petersen, Gloria Powell, Frank Taylor, Judy Walter and Eleanor Warburton The Shepherding Groups have been organized and had their first meeting after church on July 24 th. Many ideas about what we need and want to do as a church family were shared. Four things stand out that we can do now. They are: 1. Pray for one another and our church. 2. Take time to call, send a card or visit each other more often. 3. Plan a monthly social event that is open to the community. 4. Have a monthly Pot-Luck. We can begin these things now. Numbers 1 and 2 are already happening. The subject of the Tuesday Bible study is prayer. I'm going to try harder to get there at 6:00 p.m. Many of us are calling and sending cards. We can all do that. We will begin number 3 on Friday, July 29 th, at 7:00 p.m. by watching Amazing Grace together. It is a great movie so we hope you will come and bring a friend! FREE: ICE CREAM AND COLD WATER We helped cool some people off with free ice cream and cold water bottles on Thursday, July 21 st. We had a lot of fun! See Jan doing her special "ice cream wave", and Pat and Jan - our lovely hostesses! And again on July 27th, the free bottled water was a hit. Gave out forty bottles in about one hour - served a student taking driving lessons, some landscaping guys and other workers, a MoCo police officer and many others. Thanks ladies! God is good, we will do this again. Blessings, Jeanne Taylor And we will soon have a date for a Pot-Luck after church on Sunday. If you have any other thoughts or ideas, please let your Elders know. Blessings to all, Gloria Powell
