1 winter he vat adar jewih recontructionit congregation jrc New Volume 7 Number 3 Team JRC to the Recue! Water line break cannot dampen Shabbat pirit Back in September, omeone reminded me of the o called Chinee Cure, May you live in intereting time. I don t know how much more intereting it can get around here. At about 5:45 am on Saturday, January 10, the fire alarm went off due to a burt pipe in the prinkler ytem. When I arrived at the building, there wa about an inch of water over almot the entire firt floor (two EC claroom had been pared) and the firemen were trying to hut the water off. A it turn out, there were two burt pipe, one in the prinkler ytem and one in the heating ytem. The firemen had hut off the water in the prinkler, o my firt concern wa to top the flow of water in the building from the heating ytem. There mut be ome unwritten rule that thee thing only happen onweekend, and it wa everal hour before I wa able to get omeone out to repair the radiator pipe. My econd concern wa to find an alternate location for Edith Edward-Mizel bat mitzvah and notify the minyan. Jill and I tried everal potential location for the bat mitzvah with no ucce. Fortunately, I wa able to get in touch with Rabbi Jeffrey Weil at Ezra-Habonim, Nile Townhip Jewih Congregation. Rabbi Weil didn t heitate to ait u and he arranged for u to ue their chapel for Edith bat mitzvah. I am o very grateful to our taff and the JRC community for mobilizing o quickly and helping out. Thank you to Alan Saponik who anwered my call at 6:45 am and came to help reolve the problem. Thank you to David Forte. I don t know how I could have managed without hi expertie and inight. Thank you to David Tabak who wa here the entire day, cleaning up water and pitching in where ever he could. Thank you to the Edward-Mizel family for being o, o graciou about thi unexpected turn of event. Thank you to Elliot and Sam Frolichtein-Appel and Ron and Bonnie Silverman who chlepped book and tallit to Ezra-Habonim for Edith bat mitzvah (I m ure there were other too). Thank you to Darlene Groman for hoting the minyan and doing a wonderful job of communicating the ituation. Thank you to Jill Perin, who helped to make ure all bae were covered. Thank you to our wonderful, wonderful cutodian, Erneto Vega, Loui LeBlanc and Roy Vega who worked very hard all day long. It wa 7 pm by the time the prinkler and fire alarm ytem were fixed. And at the end of that very long day, I went home feeling thankful for thi wonderful JRC community. 2 2 Team JRC continued from page 1 I woke up Saturday morning believing that I knew what wa in tore for me. Then I heard of the call that my mom had gotten at 7:15 that morning. A pipe had burt, diabling the fire alarm and prinkler ytem and the elevator. For afety reaon, my Bat Mitzvah would not be taking place at JRC. My parent bigget concern with thi wa letting everyone who wa coming know about it without being able to tell them right away where it would be intead. My brother and I were on the job. We put together a mailing lit to notify people about the ituation and to be alert for another . It wa difficult, epecially becaue of ome people handwriting on their rvp card. Alo, certain people who were coming did not have and needed to be telephoned, and then there wa my Roger Park couin, who i homer habbo, and needed to be informed in peron. We got out to mot people, but how many people check their at 7:45 on Saturday morning? There wa no way of knowing who would get the meage and who wouldn t. It wan t until 9 am, an hour before my bat mitzvah wa due to begin, that we knew the ynagogue that would hot u, Ezra Habonim, the Nile Townhip Jewih Congregation. My Bat Mitzvah took place in the mall chapel. To get everything there from JRC took a lot of people, to whom I am very grateful. Cantor Howard wa epecially kind to bring the Torah from JRC o that at leat one thing would be familiar to me. Overall, it wa a very ucceful experience and I wa happy to become Bat Mitzvah, even in a ynagogue that wa not my own. I actually think thi epiode wa a bleing in diguie. It ditracted me from the worrie of meing up and all the other illy, unimportant thing I d been thinking about and helped me focu on what needed to be done. No matter where it wa, what mattered wa the friend, family and JRC member around me and what wa happening my Bat Mitzvah. Edith Edward-Mizel * * * * * If the ancient Hebrew could carry the Aron Kodeh on their forty-year trek through the deert, why couldn t the minyan do the ame lat Shabbat when JRC cloed due to flooding caued by frozen pipe burting? Darlene and Ray Groman generouly opened their home and quickly ent out word to alert participant of the location change. Like aembling a huge bubbling cauldron of tone oup, twenty minyan member pontaneouly gathered, each bringing whatever wa at hand iddurim, chumahim, tallitot, wine and challot. Led by Darlene and myelf we had previouly elected the theme of acred ground a a focu for our ervice Helga Low-Harper chanted the Torah portion and Nina Rakin delivered a facinating d var on Sh mot and the importance of name and naming. Following the ervice, a bountiful potluck oneg wa enjoyed by all, before heading off to face the frigid temp and enjoy the ret of the weekend. A i common in our JRC community, when need arie, we find creative and caring way to come together and celebrate what we hare with one another in a ene, dicovering acred ground wherever we happen to be. I have found thi column urpriingly hard to write. Even though I reach out to you weekly, a quarterly column eem to require a level of remove that my weekly letter lack. My weekly letter are deigned to provide you with information on our tranition to a new long-term rabbi and other matter of importance to the daily operation of our ynagogue. A column require me to be more circumpect, riing above the iue that keep me up at night: healing our community, reaching out to former and future member, enhancing volunteer opportunitie, and retiring the building loan. Thee iue do not allow for much large cale viion. But I hall try and ak your indulgence. During the 18 month that I have had the honor to be JRC preident, I have een the bet of our community at it lowet. Depite the feeling that JRC wa pulling apart, I have been truly heartened by how many member many of them who diagree on recent event have come together to upport our community. They ee JRC a being omething bigger than themelve, and they not only are the firt one to volunteer to erve on a committee or generouly contribute financially, they are often alo the lat one who reach in a bit deeper to give more. Every week, I receive report from our many committee and tak force that are committed to the future of our community. It i truly humbling to ee the level of belief in our community. We all benefit from their love and care of JRC. Clearly, thi i one pecial place. I am aware there i till great pain in our community and it will take time for u to heal fully, but I hope we can all tep back and take a long view of what community we are building for our children and their children. Sometime it i good to get out of the trenche and look around; the view i pretty wonderful from here. My deepet gratitude to thoe who lend u their talent, time and financial reource. Your generoity will not be forgotten. Todah Rabah and Yaher Koach.
