4 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 PAGE 4 A LESSON FROM RABBI SCOTT ROLAND A D var Halacha: Sacred Posture and Demeanor A teacher of mine once told a story about his days living in an apartment in the Nachlaot neighborhood of Jerusalem. Nachlaot is a small area in Central Jerusalem with winding streets, hidden courtyards, and many small synagogues. The neighborhood s residents range from old Middle Eastern families with ties to the local synagogues, to young neo-hasidic hippies, to some of Israel s most famous musicians. With so many small synagogues in such a concentrated area, some unique issues are bound to pop up. My teacher told me that from the shower in his bathroom he was able to hear the tefillot of a neighboring synagogue. This raised some interesting halakhik questions. One day he was in his shower and heard, Nekadesh et shimcha baolam k shem shemakdishim oto bishmei marom Or, We will sanctify Your name in the world just as they sanctify it in the upper worlds. These opening words to Kedushah are meant to snap us into a certain posture and demeanor. However, the bathroom is traditionally considered an inappropriate place for prayer. What is one to do? Rabbi Eliezer Waldenberg , wrote in his halachik treatise called the, Tzitz Eliezer, that if one is in a restroom and hears devarim shebikedusha (prayers recited only in the presence of a minyan) he or she should focus their mind elsewhere. For example, if it is a weekday one might consider their finances to distract them from what they are hearing. This bit of legal knowledge might come in handy should you find yourself in the restrooms in the back of our sanctuary at such times during services. And what about the rest of us? What is considered appropriate behavior for those of us in the Sanctuary/Beit Tefillah during the kedusha? For this, we need only to look at the first line of the prayer. Nekadesh et shimcha baolam k shem shemakdishim oto bishmei marom Or, We will sanctify Your name in the world just as they sanctify it in the upper worlds. Our tradition understands our recitation of the kedusha as that which gives the angels in heaven the strength to offer their praises to God each day. Therefore, we stand like angels with our feet together. We refrain from speaking any words other than the devarim shebikedusha, literally, sacred words. We keep our feet planted and do not ask others to move from their sacred posture until after the end of the blessing, Blessed are you, Holy God. If we enter the sanctuary during the kedusha, we plant our feet wherever we are when we first hear the sacred words and join in the chorus of praise. As we read in Psalm 19:14: Yehiyu l ratzon imrei fi v hegyon libi lefanecha, Adonai tzuri v goali. May our utterances and the meditations of our hearts fulfill the will of God, our Rock and Redeemer. Bivracha, Rabbi Scott B. Roland LUNCH & LEARN SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 Following Shabbat services and birthday luncheon, Julie Kaufman, Director of Congregational Learning, will speak about Netivot. All members of our congregation, made up of learners of all ages and stages, are invited to participate in this new individualized learning venture. 6 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 PAGE 6 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT JEFF EPSTEIN What's Our Brand? The rhythm and changes brought on each fall is always one of my favorite times of year. By the time the emotional roller coaster of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur ends and the pomp and circumstance of Sukkot and Simchat Torah have concluded, Thanksgiving is often fast approaching. Outside the changes are highly visible, with the winds and leaves reminding us of the quick passage of time and the end of our secular calendar year. With all of these unique symbols and events which create a strong emotional response and reaction, one could say that fall has a strong and clear brand identity. I've been thinking about brand quite a bit lately, as CST has undertaken an effort to better understand and communicate our brand identity. Thanks to a grant from the Legacy Heritage Foundation in connection with the participation by two of our leaders (Josh Gordon and Jessi Shapiro) in the Legacy Onboard leadership program, we've been able to bring in an expert in branding and marketing to work with our board and staff on our brand. Dawn Hanson of the Fairmount Group has been spending the last few months interviewing congregants, staff, and board leaders about our kehillah. At our recent board retreat, we completed a fascinating exercise in which we studied photos of a variety of different types of particular objects - chairs, cars, and drinks were a few examples - and selected the ones that fit us best. As a shul, are we a truck? A subcompact car? A flashy sports car? An electric vehicle? These exercises and the rest of our work with the Fairmount Group will help us identify what makes us unique and do a better job of telling our story to prospective members, the broader community, and one another. In addition to a brand platform which identifies our key brand elements, Dawn will be developing a marketing and communication plan which maps out ways we should be using our brand to communicate to key audiences. I'm grateful for the leadership of Alyson Fieldman who has been coordinating Dawn's work with us with staff leadership from Martha Sivertson. As we seek ways to grow our community, this is an incredibly important process for us to go through. We expect to finish our engagement with Dawn before the end of the year, and you'll start to see the results of this process in the coming months. Global Day of Jewish Learning This year s theme is Beauty & Ugliness Sunday, November 12, 2017 at CST 10:00 AM 11:30 AM CST will be hosting a learning session simultaneously with many other communities around the world Rabbi Roland will facilitate the teaching session Community members are welcome! Bagels, juice, and coffee will be available at the start of the session

8 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 PAGE 8 A NOTE FROM CANTOR GARY The Soundtrack of Our Prayers: A Cantor s Journey There was once a popular radio station where an announcer with a mellifluous voice would intone the call letters followed by the slogan the soundtrack of your life. As a cantor, I am concerned with the soundtrack of our prayers. I first became acquainted with Jewish sacred music through the voice of Cantor Saul Meisels of blessed memory at the old B nai Jeshurun Temple On The Heights. I heard him and the choir (accompanied by organ at that time) chant the Sh ma on a Friday night with such power and dignity. The modal character, strength, and passionate lyricism of the music made an impact on me. I was twelve years old, and did not yet know what modes were, but I knew I liked what I heard. My family had just joined the synagogue, and I had begun studying for my Bar Mitzvah with the imperious Rev. Ben Cantor. As I watched the expressive face of Cantor Meisels and heard the glorious music pour forth, I could actually see myself doing what he was doing. I was a rather quiet young man, and did not possess an over-abundance of self-confidence. Wanting to get to know Cantor Meisels, I joined his Cantor s Club, a children s chorus which rehearsed at 4:00 P.M. on Friday afternoons, just before Shabbos. I helped the cantor file music in a large closet lined with tall metal filing cabinets. Each folder was meticulously labeled with the piece s title and composer. I was amazed that there were so many versions of prayers like Mah Tovu, Hashkiveinu, Bar chu, V sham ru, and Adon Olam. I sometimes would watch quietly as Cantor Meisels sat at a special slanted table and painstakingly hand-copied music on staff paper. I learned later that he did this either to write the music in another key, or to improve the Hebrew word placement. Often, in printed music, Hebrew words are placed awkwardly with incorrect accentuation. This was one of Cantor Meisels pet peeves. After my Bar Mitzvah, the cantor I had quietly revered for a year came up to me and my parents and said Get this young man some music and voice lessons he is very talented! And, young man, I want you in my Cantor s Club I have some solos for you! I was, of course, thrilled to be receiving such praise and recognition from this man I so much admired. I responded, Thank you, cantor, but I am already in your Cantor s Club!! I told you I was quiet! The great cantor had not even noticed me before then! The following Shabbos morning, Cantor Meisels gave me a solo during the service; a May the Words he had composed himself. Fast forward five years I graduated from high school and joined Cantor Meisels professional choir, which sang every Shabbat. I met a bass in the choir named Morton Katz alav hashalom, an incredible gentleman who sold soap for a living. Mort had a beautiful, rich baritone voice, and an indomitable spirit. He had always dreamed of being a cantor, and often substituted for Cantor Meisels. It was Mr. Katz who introduced me to Reuben Caplin of blessed memory, an extraordinary person who became my voice teacher, mentor, and spiritual guide. Mr. Caplin was not a cantor, but he knew everything there was to know about the history of Jewish sacred music, hazzanut, nusach, zogachts (Yiddish term for the emotional cantorial art of modal improvisation) and the mystery of life. Reuben was the music director at Fairmount Temple for over thirty years, taught voice at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and directed the Cleveland Jewish Singing Society. It was through Reuben Caplin that I learned about an opening for a part-time cantor at Mayfield Hillcrest Synagogue. I was hesitant about applying for the position. Was a love of Jewish music enough to be a good cantor? I had so little Jewish background at that time. Mr. Caplin urged me to go forward without hesitation and submit my name. He said he knew I was meant to do this. I auditioned and got the position. This put me in touch with a third person who would have great impact on my life: Rabbi Jacob Shtull zichrono livracha. Rabbi Shtull patiently encouraged me and taught me about Jewish observance, inviting me to share many a Shabbos lunch with his warm and wonderful family. He taught me how to chant the Birkat Hamazon. Through evening Hebrew courses at the College of Jewish Studies, I gradually came to understand the meaning of the liturgy. All the while, my day job was on an assembly line at Royal Appliance making vacuum cleaners, and later in retail sales at a record store. I m sure I was the only member of the Teamsters Union to work as a blue-collar cantor! The five years I spent here with Rabbi Shtull during the early 1980 s were invaluable. I left Mayfield Hillcrest to study at the Jewish Theological Seminary Cantors Institute. Upon returning home, I gained valuable experience by serving at several area congregations. Con t. on page 9

9 PAGE 9 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 Cantor s article con t. How does one find the soundtrack of his or her life? In our affluent American society, we are blessed with the ability to find work which we love and have the aptitude for, rather than being forced into a meaningless job because of financial necessity. Otherwise, I would still be on a vacuum cleaner assembly line or working in a record store. To those of you still searching, especially those young people who are post B nei Mitzvah age, I can only encourage you to find something you have a real passion for and pursue it with all the energy you can muster. Everyone has special gifts and God means for us to develop our potential and fulfill our destiny. I hope you are as fortunate as I am to have met people who nurtured and encouraged me along the way. As I look back on my journey, I am grateful for every enriching experience. I will always carry with me those special people who helped shape my beginnings. Looking forward, I keep adding new songs to my life s soundtrack not only new prayer melodies, but new experiences and new people. Music is the motor that fuels the flow of our fervor as we pray. Just as the soundtrack of our prayers propels us to higher spirituality, the soundtrack of our lives keeps changing and moving us forward. What a wonderful ride! L shalom always moving toward peace; peace of mind, tranquility of soul, animated by the rhythm of music flowing in time, never standing still (or at least not for too long!!!!) 10 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 PAGE 10 NEWS FROM FACE TO FACE DIRECTOR LOUISE FREILICH A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah Remembering Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass Critical in Our Times This year, as we take stock of the escalation of Neo-Nazi and white supremacist activities in the United States, and as we try to respond to the rise of hatred and extremism around the world, it is more important than ever to understand that hatred will grow if left unchecked. It is more important than ever to remember Kristallnacht the Night of Broken Glass. On November 9 th and 10 th, 1938, synagogues in more than 1,200 cities and towns in Nazi-controlled areas were burned, looted, vandalized or destroyed. Windows of Jewish-owned stores were smashed. Jewish homes were destroyed. More than 300 Jews were murdered, and about 30,000 Jewish men were put in concentration camps such as Dachau and Buchenwald. It was a night we want to forget, but must remember. Kristallnacht has been called the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end. Our commemoration of Kristallnacht reminds us not to be complacent in the face of antisemitism and hatred. CST s commemoration this year will take place on Sunday morning, November 5, in conjunction with our Sunday morning minyan. The short commemoration will include a dramatic reading based on personal testimony about Kristallnacht from 11 of Shaarey Tikvah s founding or early members. Some of these eyewitness accounts will be read by relatives of those individuals. Greg Berlin, a violinist with Roots of American Music, will be adding musical inspiration. It will be a meaningful morning, so please put it on your calendars and plan to attend on Sunday, November 5 starting at 9am.

12 NOVEMBER 2017/CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5778 PAGE 12 FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARTHA SIVERTSON Unfiltered When I last wrote in the September/October GATEWAYS, I was just about to embark on my family s adventure to Norway. Needless to say, it was an incredible trip with so few snags that I considered getting into the travel business myself. Cleveland to Boston to Iceland to Oslo with Air B & B s, rented cars, train rides, boat rides, you name it! We even spent a day in Lillehammer (host of the 1994 Winter Olympics) where they have retrofitted the bobsled run to accommodate a sled with wheels they call a wheelbob. Going 70 miles an hour in a caged cart with my entire family was not my idea of fun, but it was just something I had to do. When will I go back to Lillehammer? Soon, I hope! On Wednesday, November 15 at 1:30 pm, I will give a full presentation of my trip to the Senior Café gang. I know most of you are far more travelled than I so some of my talk may be ho-hum but I hope to be able to combine my observations of this Scandinavian culture (I kept a journal) with pictures of my family doing silly things throughout the Norwegian countryside. Suffice it to say, we felt some gentle breezes, did some scary driving, and created some great memories. One thing I had arranged before going was activating two of our four cell phones for European travel. What a joy it was to not have mine be one of them! Each of my daughters took pictures, posted to Facebook and stayed in communication with their work and friends. The only (unspoken) rule we had about the phone was that no one visited Norway through their phone. Take pictures. Answer messages. Send messages. Put it away. Seeing the sites through a phone camera just does not make sense to me. The magnificence of a landscape, waterfall, or threatening sky can t be captured anyway so, why bother? Living a filtered life can be hazy, discolored and just plain boring. I know we did not digitally capture everything we saw. Impressions, all six senses, and reading my journal will fill in the blanks. Martha O to O (left to right) Amory, Tam, Julia and Me. This was Oslo s version of the Cleveland script sign.
