MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 4 A LESSON FROM RABBI EDDIE SUKOL Backwards Day Years ago my youngest son s kindergarten class celebrated Backwards Day. On Backwards Day the children wore pajamas to school, put their shirts on inside-out, wore socks that didn t match and had their morning activities in the afternoon. They loved it because, for one day, their world was turned topsy-turvy. Though they did not realize it, the children were, in essence, celebrating their own personal Purim. For the Jews, Purim is Backwards Day. Some evidence to support my assertion: We read Megillat Esther as if it were an historical book, when it fact we know it is a tall tale. Esther, a precious Jewish maiden, achieves greatness by becoming wife to a gentile, and buffoonish king. We revel in the murder of the wicked villain and his ten sons. (Compare this to the Passover seder when we diminish our wine cup by ten drops to remember the suffering of the Egyptians during the plagues.) On Purim we wear masks to hide our true identity, enabling us to behave in ways that we normally would not. We drink to excess. We make noise during the synagogue service, raucously rattling our groggers and stomping our feet. Purim is the one day during the year when students in Jewish schools were allowed to have a spiel, a little play that would mock their rabbis and teachers. While every Jewish holiday has an element of joy and celebration connected to it, Purim is pure joy. Like a Jewish Mardi Gras, on Purim we eat, drink, and make merry. On Purim we are required not only to hear the Megillah, but also to hold a feast. Our festive meal commemorates the victory of the Persian Jews over their enemies. But it is more than that. Our Purim feast, along with all of the other Purim customs and rituals, acknowledges our trust in God, even when God s presence seems hidden. Purim is a holiday about hiddenness about what is seen and unseen. The very name Esther comes from the Hebrew root samech-tav-resh meaning secret or hidden. Esther hides her Jewish identity from the King. Nowhere in the story of Esther is God s name mentioned. God is hidden in the story, present perhaps, but not seen or heard. Is it possible we want Purim to affirm that it is all right to hide our identity? Do we want Purim to suggest that God is absent in the world? As Rabbi Arthur Green has written in The Language of Truth, his translation and interpretation of the Gerer Rebbe s great writings, Purim seems to be the most secular of Jewish holidays, a time when salvation takes place through human cunning and without benefit of divine interference at all. Of course the hasidic tradition cannot see it this way. Because providence here is hidden, it must be of a higher order, entirely transcending the realm of human action. Purim points to a higher realm, the nature of which will be revealed only in the mysterious future. Let us celebrate Purim with full-throated joy. May we enjoy our feast with family and friends and lift a glass in celebration. May we also understand that Purim is a holiday of hope and trust, that no matter what happens, no matter how dire our circumstance, the Jewish people are destined to enjoy an eternal future.

MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 6 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT RICK KODISH Thoughts from Israel on Erev Shabbat As I write this column, Shabbat is about to descend on Israel. You can see it as the traffic tapers, hear it as the music changes on the radio, and you can almost smell it in the air. You can feel it in your bones, and I will soon be tasting it after kiddush at the home of my mother-in-law. I am sitting in an apartment that we have rented a block away from the Mediterranean Sea. The sensory experience of Shabbat coming in here and now reminds me of an obscure song by Bob Dylan: "When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky." Some say that it is possible to have but one home, but I disagree. Since Perach and I have been married, it feels to me like both Ohio and Israel are home. Perhaps this parallels the way you feel, or the way Jews in the diaspora have felt for centuries. The street on which our apartment is located in Herzlyia Pituach is called Rehov HaMedinat HaYehudit: roughly translated as "Jewish State" street. A street sign teaches history in this place: Theodor Herzl wrote a book called "HaMedinat HaYehudit" in The possibility of having two real homes became a reality for Jews in If you have not yet been to Israel, or if it has been too long since your last trip here, I encourage you to come home. All the while, I am also thinking about Shabbat at Shaarey Tikvah. I recently had the absolute pleasure of getting to know Mr. Julius Rothschild, one of the founders of our synagogue. He was born 15 years after Herzl's book, in Mainz, Germany in In 1934, as Hitler rose to power, Mr. Rothschild moved to Cleveland. Six years later, Shaarey Tikvah was born. Some of you may remember Mr. Rothschild speaking from the bima on the occasion of our 75th anniversary celebration. I was not there but heard that he was charming and inspiring. Late in 2015, I was informed that his 104th Birthday was approaching. I sent him a letter of congratulation on behalf of our kehillah, and he called me on the phone to say thank you. This gave me the opportunity to update him on all the wonderful activity in our shul, and he was very proud to learn that we are a thriving community. He also recently let me know that he was featured in the January 14 edition of the Beverly Hills Courrier, which you can easily find on the Internet. I encourage you to read the article which mentions our synagogue and his role as a founder. I send along best wishes to you from Mr. Rothschild!!! Back to Shabbat in Israel and at CST. The past 2 weekends were wonderful Shabbat experiences with visits from our rabbinic candidate finalists. To say that the community is engaged would be a dramatic understatement. We now have the opportunity to welcome Rabbi Sukol back from his visit to Israel (we may have crossed airplane paths somewhere over the Atlantic!!), and look forward to celebrating Purim soon to be followed by Pesach. There is so much going on and I invite you to participate. Let's keep the momentum going as we move into the next 75 years in our history!! Shalom aleichem, Rick Attn: Families with students in college Sisterhood will be sending out Passover packages to all college students for whom we have addresses. Please contact Roz at x100 or her at roz@shaareytikvah.org with your child s name and his/her college address no later than March 15!

MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 8 A NOTE FROM CANTOR GARY The Cantor s Prescription MUSIC, as far back as Shirat Mosheh, has always been an integral part of the Jewish people s worship and celebration. It is an invaluable gift, and has brought us back from the brink of despair countless times. Our life experience does not always give us much cause for rejoicing. But the healing balm of music can help pull us through dark days. In a world where it is easy to be pulled down by the negative, we must strive to be positive. Yes, we may be tired of the cold and snow but wasn t the ride up Fairmount Blvd. beautiful this morning, with the snow lacing each little tree branch? And that heavenly music playing on WCLV made the ride seem effortless. Music, in prayer and in praise of what is so right in a world where so much seems wrong, can lift us up. Here is what one of my favorite spiritual guides, Abraham Joshua Heschel, has to say about all this: The Biblical words about the genesis of heaven and earth are not words of information, but words of appreciation. the story of creation is not a description of how the world came into being, but a song about the glory of the world s having come into being. And God saw that it was good (Genesis 1:25). This is the challenge: to reconcile God s view with our experience. The meaning of existence is experienced in moments of exaltation. Man must strive for the summit in order to survive on the ground. His norms must be higher than his behavior, his ends must surpass his needs. The security of existence lies in the exaltation of existence. The demand, as understood in Biblical religion, is to be alert and open to what is happening. What is, happens, comes about. Every moment is a new arrival, a new bestowal. How to welcome the moment? How to respond to the marvel? The cardinal sin is in our failure not to sense the grandeur of the moment, the marvel and mystery of being, the possibility of quiet exaltation. This is one of the rewards of being human: quiet exaltation, capability for celebration. It is expressed in a phrase which Rabbi Akiba offered to his disciples: A song every day, A song every day. Are not Heschel s words like music? This is my prescription for whatever may be ailing you: Sing two songs and call me (or me) in the morning. Spring is just around the corner. L shalom, Cantor Gary

MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 10 FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARTHA SIVERTSON Disrupt Yourself! A few weeks ago I heard an interview on NPR with Whitney Johnson, author of Disrupt Yourself: Putting the Power of Disruptive Innovation to Work. Basically, she spoke on how CEO s go along in their companies performing tasks and accomplishing goals but it s not until a real challenge arises that the true strength of their company is tested. How about when the challenge is actually injected and set as the new course for the company? This disruption, to Ms. Johnson s point, can be just the thing a company needs to do something new, something exciting, something everyone can rally around as a new goal a new way of operating. I couldn t help but relate this disruptive business model, so to speak, to my own position here at CST and to our search for a new spiritual leader. Could it be that Rabbi Kosak knew that, for Shaarey Tikvah to take the next step in our development, our membership, our friendships, he had to leave? He knew he had to disrupt himself to further his personal growth but, Shaarey Tikvah? Let me explain how I have seen only positive signs that we are a better place because of it not in spite of it 1) Now, don t get me wrong, I love Rabbi Eddie s humor and the humanness he brings to his job and to CST as a whole. We ve had some long talks and short talks where I learn something about Judaism, about communicating with all sorts of people and, yes, a joke here and there. However, since the interim word lurks, I know I have made a lot of decisions where collaboration with a non-interim Rabbi would have been the obvious route. I ve grown in my job not only due to my two and a half years here but because disruptions have put me in a place to grow. This is a very positive thing. 2) Our 75 th Anniversary celebrations disrupted our weekly Shabbat kiddushim from time to time but weren t they fun? As I write this article, I remember being in the thick of mounting the timeline and preparing a feast for the February 21, 2015 celebration of our past. March, August and October were also happy disruptions. Good, positive memories, for sure. 3) There were some worries that, without a full-time Rabbi, our 75 th Anniversary Endowment Campaign would be lacking the punch it needed to get us to the $1.5 million we projected. You will be hearing more on that progress in a few months as we rally again to celebrate the generosity of the donors with a meal and new donor wall. The Rabbinic Search process may seem long to you but it is sure to be the most positive disruption of them all. When you see an RSC member, please thank them for their time and effort over this past year. After reviewing 15 resumes, Skype interviewing with 10, choosing six for one day interviews and willowing down to two weekend visits, the job is not yet done but the time was well spent. I look forward to many more disruptions. This year is young! Martha

MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 12 NEWS FROM FACE TO FACE DIRECTOR LOUISE FREILICH That Time of Year Again A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah It is snowing and cold as I write this. But, we re starting to think about Purim, Passover, Yom HaShoah and Kosher Taste of Cleveland. Maybe we re even starting to make some summer plans. And, at Face to Face, we need your financial help again. Face to Face is now in the middle of its 22 nd successful year. We have brought more than 44,000 students through our doors since Rabbi Gary Robuck initiated the program in More than 150 schools have participated in our meaningful Holocaust education program. In recent years, 3,000 students per year have had the opportunity to learn the lessons of the Holocaust by: Meeting with a rabbi or Jewish educator Receiving an overview about antisemitism and the Holocaust Talking with our volunteer docents Hearing first-hand testimony from a survivor We need your help. Student fees cover only about one-third of the program s cost. Moreover, we would like to increase scholarships so that fewer children will be unable to attend due to lack of funds. So, when you get your Friends of Face to Face fundraising letter, please respond generously to support the work of our volunteers and to ensure that our program continues to be a vital part of Holocaust education for students in our community. 13 PAGE 13 MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 At Home with Leona Green On the fourteenth day of the month of Adar (Adar II in a leap year), Jews celebrate our deliverance from the evil Haman who plotted to kill us. Haman has come to symbolize all of the villains throughout our history who sought to destroy us and Purim celebrates our survival in spite of them. Purim teaches us that life has infinite value. Current dates to remember in March are: Mar 10-30th of Adar I - Rosh Chodesh Mar 11-1st of Adar II Mar 23-13th of Adar II - Fast of Esther, reading of Megillah in the evening Mar 24-14th of Adar II - Purim, reading of Megillah in the morning (not at CST) Mar 25-15th of Adar II - Shushan Purim KADIMA/USY TOBOGGANING PARTY

MARCH 2016 /ADAR I/ADAR II 5776 PAGE 14 UPDATE FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR MORAH ILANA YARES Growing up, each child has their own idea about God. The children at CST will be delving into their next MyArk TM unit this month to talk about God and hear about other s ideas about God. By exploring these ideas together, I hope that a belief in God is created and solidified. Enjoy these children s stories about God and tell me about your thoughts on God! Morah Ilana What Does God Look Like? by Lawrence and Karen Kushner What Is God s Name? by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso What does God look like? God looks like nothing. And nothing looks like God. But there are many things you cannot see And still we know they are there. Like wind on a summer night. Or the sun drying puddles of rain. You know they are there, But there is nothing to see. Like the long hours until suppertime, Or the short minutes of a day at the beach. You know they are there, but there is nothing to see. Like the hug in your dad s voice, Or the happiness in a song. You know it s there, but there is nothing to see. Like the love your mom adds To your good night story, Or your worry when your dog runs away. You know it s there, but there is nothing to see. God doesn t look like anything, Because there is nothing to see. But everyone and everything give us clues that God is here. Clues that point to the One we cannot see. In the most popular TED talk of all time, Sir Ken Robinson (Do Schools Kill Creativity, 2006) tells a story about a small child drawing a picture. An adult asks, What are you drawing? The child responds, G-d. The adult says, No one knows what G-d looks like. The child responds, You will in a few minutes. After God created the world all living things were given a name. But no one knew the name for God. So each person looked for God s name. The farmer called God Source of Life. The man who tended sheep called God Shepherd. The tired soldier called God Maker of Peace. The woman who took care of sick people called God Healer. The young woman who nursed her baby called God Mother. The young man who held his baby s hand called God Father. And the child who was lonely called God Friend. All the people called God by different names. Each person said My name for God is the best. But no one listened. Then one day all the people came together. They knelt by a lake that was like a mirror, God s mirror. They looked forward and saw their own faces. They saw the faces of all the others. At that moment, the people knew that all their names for God were good. All at once, all together, they called God One. God heard and was very happy.
