MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 4 A LESSON FROM RABBI DAVID KOSAK Rebirth In recent weeks, I ve gotten to speak with many of our own about how their Pesach sedarim went. At least one dedicated family with grown children ended their seder at 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning, and several others went till 2 am. Our second night seder, the longer of the two, ended at 1:30, which just goes to show that sometimes rabbis may not be as long-winded as the old borscht-belt jokes would have it...(if you don t know that reference, go take a look at Google and you will discover an important part of American Jewish history). In childhood, all of the seders seemed long, but not in an onerous way. When we got tired, we were permitted to take a quick snooze in my grandparents living room, one of the only times we were allowed to stretch out on Nana Mimi s pristine white sofa. Yet really, who could sleep for long? There were candied fruit slices to nibble, and my mother s anxiously awaited schaum torte, a confection of German origin, which consisted of a slowly baked, cracklingly crisp sweet meringue shell filled with fresh strawberries. Apart from the food, there were the songs. My grandfather s haggadah was the Union Haggadah. It was illustrated with powerful black and white prints and interspersed with many songs traditional and then-popular. One of these was entitled, Behold it is the springtime of the year, and continued, over and past is winter s gloomy reign. The happy time of singing birds is here... These past days, that song has been reverberating in my head. Our crocuses came up, followed quickly by the deer who ate them (oh well!), and then the daffodils and hyacinths, which the four legged wildlife seem less interested in. Lawns have turned green, as has the weather; mild days are interspersed with warm. All about, one can sense the collective sigh after a frigid February and a melancholy March. The joggers have returned. But back to those crocuses and daffodils, whose bulbs I planted in late November at the last possible moment. It was my first time putting in bulbs--that was always my father s task, and his mild-manner would turn slightly dour as he cursed the squirrels ( rats with bushy tails ) who found them good eating. Flower bulbs remind us that not all is as it seems. They instruct us, of course, of the need for preparation. Additionally, they notify us that winter is not just a time of dreary cold, hibernation and relative inactivity. Winter solidifies us. It is often a period to complete plans as well as form new ones; it permits us some space to reflect forward and back. As with the bulbs, it is a time of taking root in order to flourish. Given that, I too want to look both forward and back. Leslie Sobel is completing three years of hard work and incredible commitment to our shul. She has lent us a discerning operational eye and, under her tenure, many of our policies and procedures have been revamped or created. We ve moved from a happenstance synagogue where anything goes (yes, there are occasional advantages to that also), to one where clearer guidelines help streamline the experience you will have when arranging a simchah, or acquiring a final resting place for a loved one. Leslie planted the seed for our participation in the Sulam board leadership training program, and our board has been engaged in serious thinking about its own structure and process. This is critical work, and I ll return to it momentarily. In many ways, Leslie took the strategic work that we began under Amy Einhorn, and fulfilled its calls. The largest areas of our strategic plan have successfully been crossed off. Beyond any of her initiatives or the countless queries that she has fielded, Leslie worked incredibly hard and with a single-minded dedication to CST. Many months, it seemed like she had two full-time jobs in the building. We owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude, and a very special thanks to Allyn Sobel for his patience while she labored on our behalf and was out countless days and evenings. Thank you, Leslie! It has been my privilege to partner with you. I hope you all will save the date for our June 7th annual meeting so that we can formally thank Leslie for her tireless efforts. Continued on page 21

MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 6 A MESSAGE FROM LESLIE SOBEL Five years ago we completed a strategic plan. We built a mission statement and a vision and began using it as a guide into the future. It has taken us on a path of study, tikkun olam and community celebration. Here we are and I am happy to say that so many of the pieces of this plan have been put into action partially or in full. We are stronger today for it. We are strong, possibly stronger than you realize, and still we can be stronger. Many of you have seen the timeline of our kehillah that is in the social hall. So many visionary leaders throughout the years, and I believe they all did their best to lead from a position of strength to a new position of strength. As our lay leaders transition, our new leaders may find that their impact lies in their vision for community from within and/or how we can extend our vision in the larger community. Our leaders come from all ages, CRUSY President, our 20 something single and family leaders, our young families with day school, private school and public school children, our Kadima families, our B nai Mitzvah families, our post B nai Mitzvah families, our empty nesters, our newly retired couples, our Hazak members, and our single members of all ages. I like tag lines. Our 75 th anniversary tag line, Small Shul, Large Community, is one that I hope stays with us for many years as well. I think it encapsulates our essence. We will have more times together to celebrate our 75 th anniversary during the year. The next two months though we will celebrate just being that small shul that we love to be with those that we love to share in our celebrations. A sampling of May and June programs and celebrations include a Family Shabbat Dinner, a Bat Mitzvah, Tikkun Olam Ice Cream, Kosher Taste of Cleveland, new Shabbat morning Jerusalem Minyan, Senior Café, Shavuot, Face to Face, Men s Club Shabbat, B nai Emunah/B nai Torah, Sisterhood s Women s Night Out, Women s Study Group, Maltz Museum Outing, Josh Stone Game Day and the Annual Meeting. A large community of activities available for our small shul. Our Annual Meeting is Sunday, June 7 th at 10am, after morning minyan. At this time I will be able to share our accomplishments and we can say our goodbyes. (I m really not going anywhere.) It is also a time to nominate and welcome our new board and President Rick Kodish. You will receive a formal letter in the middle of the month with the official nominating ticket for the board AND two proposed amendments to the bylaws. One amendment will be with regard to the makeup of those serving on the executive committee and the other proposal will be about the size of our quorum. Following is a list of nominees: Jeff Cohen Rick Kodish Alyson Fieldman Michael Goldberg Harold Greenberg Ellen Greenfield Martin Kohn Rene Rawraway Please do your best to come to the annual meeting. We need 75 people to make our current quorum requirements. Quorum aside, I would really like to see all of you to thank you for all the support you have given me in these last three years. Your constant words of encouragement and well wishes have made this job a blessing for me. From strength to strength, Leslie

MAY2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 8 A NOTE FROM CANTOR GARY Akdamut and the Music of the Festivals The Melody Lingers On Akdamut Millin, which means literally in introduction to the Words (referring to the Ten Commandments), is a ninety-verse Aramaic poem which was once chanted responsively after the first verse of the Torah reading on the first day of Shavuot. Because this practice interrupted the reading, the chanting of Akdamut was later moved to just before the first aliyah. The poem is still chanted in some synagogues, and can be found in Siddur Sim Shalom on pages A full English translation is included in the old Silverman Siddur as well as the new edition of Siddur Sim Shalom. It is attributed to Rabbi Meir (Nehorai) ben Yitzchak, who lived in Worms, Germany in the 11 th century. Why do I bring up this lengthy and ancient hymn from the Middle Ages? While the poem itself has largely fallen into disuse, its melody is the same one used in the Festival Kiddush on the Shalosh Regalim (the three pilgrimage festivals of Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot). The same melodic pattern also finds its way into Hodu L Adonai and Ana Adonai in Hallel during Shavuot. It is also used on Simchat Torah to call up the Chatan Torah and Chatan Bereshit. Note the symbolic connection of Shavuot, which marks the giving of the Torah, with Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the end and the beginning again of the annual cycle of Torah reading. The tune does not use the Ta-amei hamikrah accents, or tropes, for Torah cantillation, but is in the majestic Adonai Malach (God is King) mode, which, like the other prayer modes, is based on Torah chant. Akdamut is a poem of ecstatic praise to God and gratitude for the Torah. It is written in a double acrostic, followed by an additional acrostic giving the author s name, Meir, son of Isaac, with the wish May he grow in Torah and in good deeds, Amen; Be strong and of good courage! Throughout the poem, each line ends with the rhyme ta (taf & aleph), the last and first letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This is to indicate that the Torah is endless; as soon as one finishes reading the Torah, he should begin to read it all over again. This reminds me of the verse from Pirkei Avot (5:26) attributed to Ben Bag Bag which appears in the beautiful mosaic on our ark doors in the Lewis Beit Tefillah: Hafoch-bah v hafoch-bah d chola bah; Turn it (the Torah) and turn it again, for everything is in it. I can t think of better words to consider as we celebrate z man matan torateinu, the season of God s giving us the gift of Torah. Chag Shavuot Sameyach! Cantor Gary OUR BAT MITZVAH Mollie Jo Stadlin will become a Bat Mitzvah May 2nd at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah. Mollie is the daughter of Abigail and Jamie Stadlin, and the patient, loving sister of Arthur and Charles. She is the granddaughter of Alan Silverman and Tammy Gould, of Beachwood, Ohio, Rabbi Dov and Maxine Elkins, of Princeton, NJ, and Steven and Michele Stadlin, of Philadelphia, PA. Currently a 7th grader at Gross Schechter Day School, Mollie plays for the Lady Sharks basketball team. She's an excellent student who also enjoys music, lending her talents as a trombonist in the Gross Schechter band, in addition to her free lance work with the ukulele. Mollie is a vegetarian who loves animals and nature, and spends part of each summer as a camper at Eden Village, in Putnam, New York. Universally loved by teachers, friends, counselors and countless small children, Mollie is a force for good wherever she goes.

MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 10 FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARTHA SIVERTSON Study Links Synagogue Affiliation to Better Health Established in August, 2004, The Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion surveyed American Jewish communities in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and New York. Jeff Levin, director of the Institute s program on religion and population health comments, People with a strong sense of religious identity and who participate in their faith seem to do better, on average, than people without an active spiritual life. Does this surprise anyone? Not me! Here are 5 obvious reasons committed Shaarey Tikvah congregants do better : 1) Synagogue Friends on Facebook have kept us active. I can t tell you how many times I have read posts about people skydiving, hiking the Adirondacks, skiing the Alps, etc. etc. Everyone knows that you can t do any of those things without being at least a little healthy. 2) Synagogue Friends on Facebook also like to post pictures of what they are eating. I have only seen salads or other colorful arrangements of foods that are NEVER chili fries smothered in cheese or triple layered burgers. VS 3) Going to services on Saturday morning means you have not overdone it on Friday night. Taken one step further, going to services on Friday night means you have not overdone it on Friday night. A nice quiet dinner with family can often guarantee a good night s sleep. It is estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans chronically suffer from a disorder of sleep and wakefulness, hindering daily functioning and adversely affecting health and longevity. -National Institute of Health 4) Active synagogue members are always in evening meetings ruling out a few more nights each week that could be spent in bars. 5) What could be more obvious than the Power of Prayer! Martha

MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 12 NEWS FROM FACE TO FACE DIRECTOR LOUISE FREILICH A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah A Must-Read Book Having met the author, heard him speak and read his book, I would strongly recommend reading an inspiring memoir by Carl Wilkens, I m Not Leaving: Rwanda Through the Eyes of the Only American to Remain in the Country Through the 1994 Genocide. Wilkens bravely chose to remain in Rwanda through the one-hundred days of terror, when Tutsis were being hounded by Hutu militia extremists. He did this in order to protect two Tutsi household workers whom his family employed. Carl Wilkens reconstructs in detail both personal and political events triggered by the April 6 plane crash assassination of the President of Rwanda and Burundi. Many people owe their lives to Wilkens. I met Mr. Wilkens when he spoke at a United States Holocaust Memorial Museum student leadership summit at Case Western Reserve University in January. His talk was inspiring and his memoir is definitely worth reading. In the introduction to I m Not Leaving, Wilkens talks about personalizing the 800,000 lives lost during the Rwandan genocide, writing, We lost: 18,465 gentle, never-a-harsh-word great-grandfathers 23,659 searching wide-eyed infants 178,147 do-anything-for-their-families moms 73,952 teasing, endlessly annoying grade-school boys 19,320 quietly excited, wedding-planning brides 16,834 nearly blind, always encouraging grandmothers pulled from their beds 22,465 disciplined, ripped, eager athletes in training 21,872 always-quick-with-a-kind-word aunties 34,298 young men working hard to save up the bride price 25,359 patient, encouraging school teachers 39,293 girls at the age of a first crush 17,426 sons who spoke to their elders with respect 214,589 protective dads I came to the point where I had to stop estimating numbers for the nurses, pastors, priests, artists and craftsmen killed. It s too painful to continue to come up with more categories to list after the numbers. 48,398 who? 15,763 who? I simply cannot describe in words and numbers the catastrophic loss experienced by Rwanda and by our whole global community. Wilkens words made me think that we could come up with a similar list when talking about the Shoah. The categories might be slightly different, we might not use the same adjectives, the aunties might become tantes and the numbers would be about 8 times higher but the idea would be the same; there are simply no words and numbers that can describe the catastrophic loss of lives during the Holocaust. Please visit us as we attempt to personalize the lives lost during the Shoah to the students and teachers who attend Face to Face each year. We have 4 sessions left to wrap up another successful school year for the program and visitors are always welcome.

MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 14 UPDATE FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR MORAH ILANA YARES In trying to think of a topic for my May article, I wanted to do some research. Each month, there is a theme that we can write about. For May, I thought that I would write about Shavuot as it is at the end of the month. However, my research led me to learn that by proclamation of the President in 2006, May became Jewish American Heritage Month. May is the time for us to celebrate our over 350 years of contributions to America as a Jewish people. There have been all sorts of Jews who have contributed to American society. I am sure we all know that Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg are famous Jewish baseball players who were not afraid to stand up for their religion and both refused to play on Yom Kippur. Ralph Lauren and Levi Strauss both were tailors and fashion designers with their own lines, making way for others to be able to follow in their footsteps. The multitude of entertainers include Henry Winkler, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, Billy Crystal, Mel Blanc, and more. But what about the lesser known famous Jews. Did you know that Daniel Libeskind, the architect who oversaw the rebuilding of the World Trade Center is the child of Holocaust survivors? What about Roy Sparkia, who designed and created the Empire State Building? Benny Friedman (I m sure the name gives it away) was a great football player who invented the forward pass. And Lipman Pike was the first Jewish professional baseball player and paved the way for others to play such as Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax. Ruth Handler, the creator of the Barbie doll, was Jewish. And how many of you love drinking coffee from Starbucks? You have Howard Schultz, the chairman and CEO of Starbucks, to thank for that. There are plenty of famous Jews who helped in the 350 year history of Jewish contributions to American culture and this is the time to acknowledge their achievements from sports, arts, and entertainment to medicine, business, science, government, and military service. So, now is the time to honor these Jewish Americans. We should be building awareness of the important contributions of Jewish Americans to our nation s history and culture. We are the Jewish people. The chosen people. We want to make sure everyone knows how we have helped and contributed to society. By educating your children, The Open Dor Academy TM has the opportunity to ensure the Jewish future, and you have the opportunity to share our important past with others. Check out jewishamericanheritagemonth.us for more information and possible events that could be happening in our area. Shalom, Morah Ilana

PAGE 17 MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 MITZVAH CORPS We are making a difference! Below is a letter from a Little Free Library volunteer to the coordinator. You can see how much the LFL impacts others. Hi Judy, Just FYI -- yesterday, I was at the P.O. near Shaker Square & as I drove away, I realized I should have checked on the LFL at Dave's; so after I ran another errand, I drove back to Dave's & found that the LFL was EMPTY!! So I put 40 books in it! As I was putting in the last books, a woman walked up with what looked to be her young granddaughter, who I think were just coming out of Dave's. They were so excited, as the older woman said "Oh, we looked in here earlier & there were no books". So the older woman told her granddaughter that she could take one book. (I said she could take two!). Then I handed the "grandmother" a book that she could read to her pre-school granddaughter. They both thanked me. Then this afternoon, as I was driving home from a Slavic Village activity, (& adding 30 books to the Miles Park LFL) I decided to check on the Dave's LFL (just for curiosity sake)! Believe it or not, just after one day, I had to add 30 more books! Again, while I was filling it, a man walked up & took several children books, which he said he takes to read to children & seniors!! He also took one adult book for himself. He stopped to chat about how important reading is!!! Rewarding experiences!!! Nancy - And here is a note from Debbie Picker, who attended A Very Special Seder: Hi All- I am the proudest of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah during and after the Special Seders. These unique events welcome individuals who are generally marginalized in our community, and though it may be unintentional, it limits their inclusion in the celebrations of our traditions. The Special Seder is a warm, spirited experience unlike any other. No other synagogue in our area opens their doors in this way. They don t know what they are missing. The participants were so engaged in the experience, even the non Jews! They all had a wonderful time, enjoying the Pesach story and the music, but they weren t alone in the feeling. I am still beaming as I reflect on it. Thank you all so much for making tonight possible! Debbie

MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 PAGE 20 Shalom; I have been really lucky during my time as Youth Director at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah to have been pulled aside by many of you thanking me for being a role model, a person that the kids can relate to and communicate with about a variety of Jewish and secular topics- a role I truly do not take lightly. Over the past two and a half years though, I think the one who has gotten most inspiration out of this position has been me. From seeing our teens go across the world to Africa to volunteer, to hearing about leading fellow students through a rigorous and dangerous outdoor hiking experience, to watching our teens stand up for what they believe in and going against the thoughts of their peers- I have been blessed to be inspired by our teens on a daily basis! I was recently inspired by Sarah Borow and Noa Immerman - the three of us along with some other girls across CRUSY (and Ilana Yares!) got together and decided to donate their hair for those in need of wigs. Noa donated 12 inches to Locks for Love and Sarah donated her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths I, along with Ilana Yares, donated to Wigs for Kids. With these donations, individuals who have lost their hair due to illness or side effects from treatments, will be able to have a beautiful wig to help restore self esteem and confidence! Talk about inspiration- our very own Hannah Borow was elected to serve as the Central Region USY President! Her hard work and dedication to not just the region but also to STUSY is inspiring. I cannot wait to see the big things to come from Hannah's leadership and am so proud to call her one of our own!! I cannot wait to keep finding inspiration in our teens! B'ahava, Katie L to R: Sarah Borow, Katie Mintzer, Noa Immerman Hannah Borow being installed as CRUSY Regional President

PAGE 21 MAY 2015 / IYAR/SIVAN 5775 THE SENIOR CAFÉ AT CST GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! Join friends and peers once a month for our free midday coffee klatch. Conversation, a changing selection of light, breezy activities and occasional speakers on topics of interest. When: May 20 1:30 3:00 pm Contact: Judy Friedman (216) Shirley Hoffman (440) Steve Friedman, Director Cleveland Sight Center, will speak on: The Variety of Services that the Sight Center Provides to All Ages RABBI S ARTICLE CON T. FROM PAGE 4 I hope you ll save the date for another reason as well, one that brings us back to bulb-planting and Sulam. As has already been announced, Dr. Eric Kodish will officially be accepting the presidential reigns from Leslie at our annual meeting. Rick serves as the Director of Cleveland Clinic's Center for Ethics, Humanities, and Spiritual Care; is the F. J. O'Neill Professor and Chairman of the Department of Bioethics, Executive Director of the Cleveland Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics, and Professor of Pediatrics at the Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. We are so glad he will be leveraging his deep leadership experience on our behalf. As we complete this first strategic plan and begin to implement the refresh that Leslie, Allyson Fieldman, Ethan Karp and I have been working on, Rick s keen intellect, oversight experience and big-picture approach will be incredibly valuable to us. To help him in that work, and to keep CST a viable and quick-moving institution, one of our constitutional by-laws is up for amendment; the change will adjust how we count a quorum--so that it is based on 25% of members in good standing. In today s busy world, this small technical change addresses how we participate, and will allow the institution the flexibility to address those changes. The Jewish tradition and our people have always managed to merge the subterranean work of winter with the energy and new life that follows. The daily Amidah prayer speaks of God s work in reviving life (m chayeh meitim). As we continue hope s momentum and pass the mantle of leadership, I hope you ll join your friends and congregants on Sunday morning, June 7th. Behold, it is the springtime of the year! David
