The word Shavuot (or Shavuos) means weeks. It marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. The Torah was given by G-d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai on Shavuot more than 3,300 years ago. Every year on the holiday of Shavuot we renew our acceptance of G-d s gift, and G-d re-gives the Torah. The giving of the Torah was a far-reaching spiritual event one that touched the essence of the Jewish soul for all times and is compared it to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. Shavuot also means oaths, for on this day G-d swore eternal devotion to us, and we in turn pledged everlasting loyalty to G-d. In ancient times, two wheat loaves would be offered in Holy Temple on Shavuot. It was also at this time that people would begin to bring bikkurim, their first and choicest fruits, to thank G-d for Israel s bounty. Congregation Shaarey Tikvah is an egalitarian Conservative congregation whose members are passionate about Judaism. By combining meaningful and joyful worship, serious Jewish learning, social action and compelling Shabbat and holiday experiences, we create a vibrant spiritual community.
2 Iyar/Sivan - May 2018 Page 2 A Message From Our President Jeff Epstein Dear Friends, Spring continues to be a busy time at CST with activity on many fronts. We are excited that Cantor Beth Schlossberg will be joining us starting this summer as a part time visiting Cantor. The musical futures committee is working on collecting feedback from the community to continue to plan for our future. The Va ad is starting the planning process around our educational vision as they look to replace our director of congregational learning, Julie Kaufman. By the time your read this the first of our Entrees and Insights programs will be complete with many more exciting dinner-and-a-speaker events to follow. We are also in the midst of our annual cycle of budget planning and board nominations as summer and our annual meeting will quickly be upon us. The phenomenal volunteers who make up our board and committees continue to work tirelessly to make CST a great place! Jeff Epstein CST Board President Cantor Beth Schlossberg grew up on the Main Line of Philadelphia. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2001 with a Bachelor of Music, she spent several years singing professionally in the classical world with the Philadelphia Opera Company and the Da Ponte Concert Opera in NYC, and singing in the Jewish world as a cantorial soloist. Cantor Beth also taught piano and voice, and ran the Hebrew School and Pre School music programs at Har Zion Temple, the synagogue she grew up attending. In 2003, realizing that the Cantorate was a perfect fit to combine her love of Judaism and of music, she decided to enroll in the Jewish Theological Seminary at the H.L. Miller Cantorial School. After being invested in 2008, Cantor Beth moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she spent 4 years with Beth El Synagogue before joining the Kol Ami family in Cantor Beth and her husband Michael are delighted to share in the warmth and vitality of our community. 3 Page 3 Face To Face Louise Freilich, Director of Face To Face Iyar/Sivan - May 2018 Reaching Out-Moving Forward at Face to Face Every year at Face to Face, we welcome back teachers who have brought us their students previously for a morning of learning about Judaism, the Holocaust, and tolerance. We love having them come through our doors with each new batch of their students. As you can see from the chart detailing our new and returning schools over the past five years, we have a great retention rate. Each year we also need to welcome new schools and new teachers in order for the program to grow and move forward. With that in mind, on April 10th, Martha Sivertson and I attended Fair on the Square at Playhouse Square to reach out to potential teachers who might be interested in bringing their classes to Face to Face next schoolyear. Fair on the Square is an event put on by the Playhouse Square Community Engagement and Education Department. Several hundred teachers were able to explore more than 50 exhibit tables, set up back stage at the KeyBank State Theatre, representing organizations which provide fieldtrip or other educational opportunities for students. Martha and I had a fun afternoon talking with dozens of people, collecting addresses from hot prospects, and giving out Face to Face information to teachers of students in younger grades to give to their colleagues and friends who teach middle and high school students. Now begins the work of keeping our wonderful Holocaust education program on prospective teachers radar. In May, you will still have 3 chances to visit us. On May 10th we ll be hosting a new survivor speaker, Eric Kisch, whose family escaped from Austria to Shanghai during the Holocaust. We ll finish up the year with sessions on May 17th and May 24th and our annual staff and volunteer appreciation luncheon on May 31st. Please don t forget to visit us this year and also, don t forget to put your Friend of Face to Face check in the mail if you have not done so already.
