4 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 PAGE 4 A LESSON FROM RABBI SCOTT ROLAND EXECUTIVE ORDER NEW SEATING ARRANGEMENT FOR ALL SERVICES AND PROGRAMS TAKING PLACE IN THE CONGREGATION SHAAREY TIKVAH SANCTUARY By the authority vested in me as Rabbi by the Board of Directors and the bylaws of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, as well as the Babbleonagain Talmud Masechet Shtuyot 36c et seq. and in order to ensure the proper fulfillment of the mitzvot associated with the upcoming Purim holiday I hereby order as follows: Section 7. Purpose. Pews are critically important to the comfort of congregants and visitors when attending services and programs at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah. Sitting during services is a longstanding tradition of The Jewish People in order to allow for the settlement of food in our stomachs, which therefore allows for the maximum consumption of Kiddush food, and for deriving the maximum benefit from one s synagogue membership dues. Section 26. Argument. However, it is also well known that the word pew itself was originally a shortened form of the word pee-yew, indicating one s option of moving to a different seat should one find themself in a particularly stinky situation. Additionally, Jews shuckle in an effort to keep their bodies moving during prayers as an effort to keep themselves from being bored out of their minds. On Purim especially, Jews have the custom to v nahafoch hu, to turn things upside down as the decree against the Jews was turned upside down in the Purim story. Section 18. Policy. Therefore, it shall be encouraged that all members of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah switch sides of the sanctuary on and around the First of Adar, which corresponds to the evening of Sunday, February 27, 2017 in the Gregorian calendar. At that point, a wall will be constructed and a temporary ban will be placed on immigration to the other side of the sanctuary until the day after the Purim holiday, the Fifteenth of Adar, which corresponds to the evening of March 12, 2017 in the Gregorian calendar. Section Invitation. Please join us on the Fourteenth of Adar, which corresponds to the evening of Saturday, March 11, 2017 in the Gregorian calendar, for Esther: A Persian Musical, Congregation Shaarey Tikvah s Hamilton-themed Purim spiel. Services and Megillah reading will begin promptly at 7:15pm followed by dinner, spiel, and further holiday shenanigans. RABBI SCOTT B. 6 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 PAGE 6 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT RICK KODISH...FROM THIRTY THOUSAND FEET... As we fly west across the country, I have a chance to share some Shaarey Tikvah thoughts from way up here. Two separate topics are on my mind: security and openness. And as I write I begin to see some connections. We just celebrated Tu B Shevat, and Perach s WhatsApp group of Israeli siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins featured this very nice wisdom related to what we can learn from trees (translated from the Hebrew): Stand tall Drink lots of water Generously share your shade with others Enjoy the view Always stay attached to your roots Appreciate your own natural beauty So let s begin by looking at our roots and how we might stay attached. We are a synagogue founded in 1940 by Jews who were refugees from Germany. As the turbulence of our current national debate around immigration and the proper balance between security and openness as a country seems to intensify each day, it helps to know who we are and from whence we came. I am not of German Jewish descent, but the issues seem equally applicable to my great grandparents who came to these shores at the end of the 19 th century-jews from Poland, Russia and Hungary. Come to think of it, the same considerations pertain to my wife s parents who immigrated to Israel from Baghdad and Basra respectively in Our history as a people is one of diaspora and homecoming, drifting and settling. Where does this leave us in 2017, as the gates of hope are closed to many who might have been us or our family? At the same time, the need for attention to our security is an ever present concern and one that I do not take lightly. We must recognize the connections between the macro level debate currently taking place in our larger society, and our own more local conditions and context in regard to these questions. At our January Board meeting, your synagogue trustees had a vigorous discussion about security. As a result of that conversation, I have appointed a CST Security Committee to review all aspects of our safety at the synagogue. I am grateful to Michael Goldberg for his leadership in the effort, and we look forward to future recommendations that we can use to enhance security in a way that does not unduly diminish the welcoming atmosphere that we have come to appreciate at CST. In February, the Board had an even more robust discussion. This one related to the Executive Order of Friday, January 27, 2017 entitled Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States. As a synagogue, we are not in the habit of entering the fray when it comes to major public debates. My role as President, and one I take very seriously, is helping to set the agenda and decide what comes to the Board for discussion and possible action. When Peter Shulman approached me about our Board making a statement that would address the Executive Order as it relates to our own synagogue history and Jewish values, I reflected and spoke with Rabbi Roland and other lay leaders. We decided that a special meeting was warranted. As one would expect, there was some diversity of opinion. More importantly, there was an intense level of respect and deep listening to one another. The outcome was that the Board authorized the Executive Committee to incorporate the important feedback that was given, and revise the initially proposed Resolution and transform it into a Statement. The clear consensus was to express serious reservations about the Executive Order, but to be very circumspect in how the statement was phrased. Specifically, the Board was clear that it is speaking only for itself and not by any means suggesting that the statement represents a unanimous view of the entire congregation. I could comment a great deal more on the content of the statement, but would rather point out something about the process. Many other synagogues and Jewish organizations have expressed similar concern. What I want to convey with regard to CST is more about kavannah. The degree to which members of your Board took their responsibility seriously was so impressive, and in the words of our opening prayer for Board meetings we were able to listen to each other carefully, treating one another with respect, and assuring that our honest differences do not overshadow our unity of purpose-to carry out the important work that this congregation has entrusted to us.

7 PAGE 7 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 And I will let the content speak for itself. The final version of the CST Board Statement on the Executive Order reads as follows: Our Torah teaches the Jewish people that You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt (Deut. 10:19). Over the last two thousand years, Jews have been strangers in many lands, sometimes comfortably, too often subject to discrimination, persecution, expulsion, and, during the Holocaust, wholesale extermination. We are a people who have been set apart, stereotyped, and demonized. Congregation Shaarey Tikvah ( Gates of Hope ) was founded in 1940 by Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi terror. Sixteen years earlier, the United States had imposed an immigration law that severely restricted the flow of immigrants from countries in which Jews were most likely to reside. The law did not mention Jews, but it did not have to. This law, and others like it, sought to preserve the ethnic, racial, and religious makeup of this country for Americans threatened by the arrival of Eastern and Southern Europeans, especially Jews, as well as migrants from China and Japan. The founders of Shaarey Tikvah were among the few Jews of this era who managed to reach the United States. Tens of thousands of others if not more might have been saved from suffering or perishing in the Holocaust had immigration restrictions not been in place. Shaarey Tikvah s history as a congregation of refugees reverberates to the present day. Our congregation has developed the Face to Face program, which has taught over 40,000 students since 1994 about the Holocaust, prejudice, and the value of tolerance. We have continued to welcome immigrant members from at least four continents. In greater Cleveland, the founders of Shaarey Tikvah joined a region home to over a hundred different immigrant communities. Today, our East Side Cleveland suburbs contain friends and neighbors from around the world, including the seven Muslim-majority countries singled out in the president s Executive Order restricting immigration. Throughout American history, people of different faiths, ethnicities, and national origins have not only become Americans but strengthened the fabric of our society. The words of George Washington to the Jews of Newport, Rhode Island are no less true today than they were in 1790: It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights, Washington wrote, for, happily, the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support. From our congregation s history and the values of our faith, the Board of Shaarey Tikvah expresses its opposition to the Executive Order of Friday, January 27 th, 2017 entitled Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States and any future measures curtailing the entry or immigration to America of Muslims or people of any faith, and affirms America s foundation as a pluralistic and welcoming society. We are committed to the twin goals of security and openness. Stay tuned for updates on both of these issues, including action steps our Mitzvah Corps will take to help us be more open and welcoming and contribute to the broader societal goals of chesed. And at the same time, we will keep vigilant with regard to our safety and security and thank our newly formed Security Committee for their efforts. In the end, we will find the right balance!! L hitraot, Rick

10 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 PAGE 10 NEWS FROM FACE TO FACE DIRECTOR LOUISE FREILICH A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah We are having a very busy and productive year at Face to Face. We expect once again (for the fourth year in a row) to have close to 3,000 students attend our Holocaust education program. We also expect to have a record 39 sessions, including a special program for adults, scheduled for Wednesday, April 26. The special adult Face to Face Holocaust education session will provide two CEUs (continuing education units) for social workers, counselors, and psychologists through Cleveland State University. Participants will learn about Judaism and the Holocaust through a slightly modified Face to Face morning, will have the opportunity to hear the personal testimony of Nina Frankel (one of our Holocaust survivor speakers) and will explore, over lunch, responses to trauma with a social worker, Irene Marocco. Please let all of your friends who are social workers, psychologists and counselors know about this very interesting way to earn CEUs. Those wanting CEUs should register through the CSU website course/course.aspx?c=896&pc=1&mc=&sc. Those interested in attending but not requiring CEUs should contact Rabbi Shalom Plotkin at Right at Home (a co-sponsor of the program): shalom@ohioseniorcare.net. For more information, please check out this website: It is time once again to ask for your support for our wonderful program. We could not do all we do without you. We could not teach students from across the region about this tragic period in Jewish and world history. We could not give students the opportunity to visit a synagogue and meet Jews, many for the first time in their lives. We could not inspire students to stand up against injustice and intolerance in today s world. We could not provide materials to teachers to help in teaching their students about the Holocaust. We could not provide scholarship assistance to cover student fees for needy schools. We could not make connections and friendships throughout the community. We could not provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for our congregants. We could not provide a forum for Holocaust survivors to tell their personal Holocaust stories and have those stories be heard. In short, we could not run Face to Face without your support. Please respond to your Friends of Face to Face letter in the mail as generously as possible. We need all the help we can get as we complete our successful 23 rd year and move into planning for our 24 th year this summer. 13 PAGE 13 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 MITZVAH CORPS The first meeting of the Mitzvah Corps happened February 21st. The discussion centered on internal and external projects that the committee might focus on in A major issue discussed was recruiting enough volunteers to provide those in need of meals due to lifecycle events. Another need discussed was getting persons to Shul who would not otherwise be able to attend services due to age or disability. It was noted that there is now tracking software for synagogues in which you can store the needs of congregants as well as volunteer commitments. The committee agreed to research the feasibility of such software. The Mitzvah Corps discussed participation in Greater Cleveland Congregations. GCC is an interfaith organization made up of Churches, Synagogues and Mosques that have come together to deal with social issues such as criminal justice reform, transforming urban education, gun violence, joblessness, and healthcare in Cuyahoga County. Ten Jewish institutions are involved including B nai Jeshurun, Park Synagogue and the Jewish Federation. Attendees at the meeting felt that we should further research CST s possible participation in this group. ***************************************************** Please note that the Little Free Library is still up and running behind Dave s Super Market in Shaker Square. We can always use more people to stock the Library with books from time to time. Stop by the shul during regular work hours to pick up a bag of books or bring books from your home directly there. Thanks! 15 PAGE 15 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 Your guide to all things youth-y and STUSY Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this month and you know what that means six more weeks of winter. How are we going to get through snow, grey skies, and 20 degrees but with a wind chill of - 2?? The good news is there are plenty of activities and events to keep our teens occupied, engaged, and busy! And wow - have our teens been busy. They participated in the Shabbaton and enjoyed a conversation with Carl Cook. BBYO hosted its winter wonderland party at Happy Days Lodge. JCUSY (Jewish Cleveland USY) ventured down to Cincinnati for the speciality kinnus. This is one of the groups favorite gatherings as it incorporates a day of service in addition to the regularly scheduled activities. With so much happening around Cleveland, our teens still had time to come to the synagogue for Rabbi Roland s first Teen Torah Tuesday! A discussion about G-d s role in Judaism led to a lively debate among the participants. Mark your calendar for the next TTT which takes place on Feb 28 - come by for pizza and discussion! Please be sure to check out upcoming events and let me know if you have any questions. As I continue to meet with families and their teens, I m excited to see so many of our younger CST members take an active role participating in the Jewish Teen Torah Tuesday Takes Off community. It may still be winter in CLE but we re not letting that hinder our activities. Of course, if your teen is still nostalgic for warmer weather, I m always excited to meet them out for ice cream - Mitchell s is on me! Optimistically, Jennifer jennifer@shaareytikvah.org All events are open to any Jewish teenager in high school (grade 9-12) unless otherwise noted. 18 MAR 2017/ADAR/NISAN 5777 PAGE 18 A NOTE FROM CANTOR GARY Dear Friends, Towards the end of January, our president, Rick Kodish, offered me a month of family medical leave beginning February 1 st. My father had been hospitalized with pneumonia in early January and then spent some time in rehab at Montefiore Home. There was some concern about his ability to return to living alone due to other medical issues. I was moved by Rick s offer and gratefully accepted. For the past few weeks, I have been arranging and monitoring home health care, taking my Dad to doctor appointments, spending more time with him, and preparing to move in with him. In addition, I have been in touch by with Rabbi Roland regarding plans for our Purim celebration on Saturday night March 11 th and Sunday morning March 12 th. I have also been planning our 3 rd Interfaith Concert, which will take place at CST on Sunday, March 26 th at 4 pm. I am excited about these upcoming events and very much looking forward to being back at services the first week of March. I am happy to report that my father is improving, and appreciate the kindness of Rick and the congregation for allowing me some time away to take care of my Dad and myself.
