JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 PAGE 4 A LESSON FROM RABBI DAVID KOSAK A Blessing is the Present Rising Up to Meet the Future A number of years ago, on Erev Rosh Hashanah, we turned to one another and offered words of blessing for the new year. It was a happily charged moment for those of us who were present. As some of us struggled to find words, it was also a reminder that we contemporary Jews do not bless one another with any sort of frequency. This is somewhat disheartening when we consider how central an activity blessing is in the Bible and in later Judaism. Perhaps that is because we are not exactly sure what a blessing is, or if we have the power to make spontaneous or individualized benedictions. Such uncertainty highlights the many different concepts our tradition has enveloped in the single word of brakhah. The standardized formula we are most familiar with is: Barukh atah adon elok melekh ha olam. Blessed are You, Our God, Ruler of the Universe, followed by a particular description of God s power. Blessed are you, God, who creates the fruit of the vine, or brings bread from the earth, or gives the rooster understanding to distinguish between natural cycles such as dark and light. In these cases, we really use this word blessing as a form of praising God and offering up gratitude for our many gifts. We do not presuppose that we have the power to extend any sort of shefa, of divine flow to God (although the medieval mystics did think this). There are many other cases, though, when we are indeed directing some sense of shefa to other people. We say, barukh ata b voekha, barukh ata b tzeitekha. May you be blessed in your coming and your going. Sometimes, we depart from the standard formula, such as when we bless our children on Friday night using the words of the priestly benediction. May God bless you and watch over you. May God s countenance shine upon you and grace you. May God lift up the Divine Face to you, and place peace upon you. Here we do offer blessing as a conduit, hoping and praying that safety, peace and abundance will accompany our children. This latter form of blessing fellow people finds much expression in the later Midrash and Talmud. Abraham blesses Isaac, and, more importantly, transfers to him the ability to bless others. In Masekhet Megillah, our Sages even exhort us not to take the blessings of a commoner lightly. In other words, what began with Abraham as a human capacity to bless in a personalized manner is extended to all human beings. I learned that lesson on the back streets of Jerusalem. There, a toothless man in ragged clothes and of questionable sanity would regularly approach a friend and me, place his hands on us, and recite birkat kohanim, the priestly blessing mentioned above. Then he would add his own addition, Tihiyeh bari, v lo tihiyeh choleh! You should be healthy, and you should not be sick. To receive these words from someone who was clearly touched by illness always felt like an encounter with a holy meshugeneh. They were also a startling reminder that indeed, we all have the power to confer blessing on others. With that in mind, and with this most likely being my final bulletin article, I want to offer you the following brakhot: May you be blessed to care for and to support one another in this kehillah kedoshah. May you encourage one another to ever greater acts of kindness and of holiness. The story of Avraham has echoed through history. May this congregation be blessed with similarly robust PR, so that all of Cleveland will understand the depth of CST's contributions and its ongoing example of a caring, passionate and learned community. 5 PAGE 5 JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 A MESSAGE FROM LESLIE SOBEL For the past few weeks, each day I receive in my box an article written in the Daily Newsletter Beachwood Patch titled, Can we do better than happy? We hear about being happy a lot and though I don t consciously think about my personal happiness, I am aware of how my interactions affect my happiness and the happiness of others. We all know the story of lottery winners who are no happier after their winnings than before and we all probably know an entrepreneur or two that has worked virtually 24/7 for perhaps many years who is happy every day. Though studying happiness may seem silly, within the context of Jewish thinking on happiness, Purim comes to mind. Though not the costume type, I dressed in costume for Purim these past years and I found that when people don t look like themselves they give themselves license to be happier. Perhaps we forget ourselves, have a schnapps, shed our inhibitions and act happy. Ilana Kurshan writes, Purim reminds us that happiness is sadness dressed in borrowed robes. We wear painted clown masks over our furrowed brows and can t help smiling when we see our friends in their silly disguises. Yet happiness is often not sustained by the external masquerade of happiness. The Jewish Magazine quotes Lance Lentel as he exclaims that happiness is found behind the closed doors of people who do not live for the attention of others, the people who do honest work and are certainly not perfect. This is my experience with CST. We work hard and we play hard for our own happiness and the success of our kehillah and the greater community. As we begin to close our chapter with Rabbi Kosak, the leadership is building a search committee and reviewing options for both an interim and permanent rabbi. By the time you receive the bulletin, the search committee will be seated and will begin the hard work that is necessary. Also, the 75 th anniversary committee will soon reach out to update you on the creative programming for our future that will happen late this summer and the final event in the fall. As we move forward please think about your contribution to the 75 th anniversary campaign. We have matching funds for every dollar you donate and it is at this time that we need to invest in our future. It has been my pleasure to serve as President of our warm and welcoming congregation. The work I have done has made me happy. Really. I hope that you can find your place at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, perhaps on a committee, or as a teacher, or a learner. Our programs are a means to get to know each other at a different level. This past Shabbat Roulette lunch was such a program. I had the opportunity to spend time with others that I knew only peripherally. Conversation and lunch even made up for a drizzly Shabbat afternoon. I look forward to more conversations with you. Please join me on June 7 th at the annual meeting. We will discuss the past and the present and enjoy being with each other. Lastly, I will continue to work with Rick Kodish, the executive committee and the Board of Trustees to help with the transition of lay leaders and professional staff. As I sign off I want to wish you and Shaarey Tikvah many more Happy Birthdays. My thanks, Leslie To my CST Family, Friends, and Supporters, I really appreciate all of the help of the kitchen mavens and all of the generous donations to honor my milestone birthday. Thank you again, Shirley Hoffman

JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 PAGE 6 A NOTE FROM CANTOR GARY Musical Archaeology: The Mystery of Selah The word Selah occurs seventy-one times in thirty-nine Psalms and three times in Habbakkuk (3:3, 9, and 13). It appears either once at the end of a psalm, or multiple times in the middle of a psalm, placed at the end of a clause. The meaning of this word has been variously interpreted by scholars, and remains doubtful. Several commentators translate it as forever, derived from the word l'almin or l almo, which the Targum (Aramaic translation of the Bible) refers to as selah. Another opinion is that selah is a word of emphasis, meaning so it is, thus, or and the matter is true and right. For example, in Psalm 81:8, I proved thee at the waters of Meribah selah" could be read as I proved thee at the waters of Meribah so it is true. The word could also be an affirmation, such as Amen and Shalom, or an exclamation like Halleluyah, found at the end of Biblical writings. Could Selah have a musical connotation? Scholarly detectives have found that thirty-one of the thirty-nine psalms containing the word selah have the word lamenatzei-ach in their headings. One translation of lamenatzei-ach is for the leader, to the conductor, or to the chief musician, which infers some instruction regarding the melody or the accompaniment of the psalm. Another interpretation is to be performed. Psalm 4 begins with the words Lamenatzei-ach bineginot, to be performed on stringed instruments. Yet another possible meaning of lamenatzei-ach is to the conqueror (from natzei-ach, to win. This is based on the efforts of King David to conquer evil and establish virtue through melody and song. The appearance of other words with musical connotations such as neginot, mizmor, and al-alamot in the opening of these psalms are further clues pointing to selah having a musical meaning. Neginot has various meanings: (1) A general term describing all stringed instruments, derived from naggan, to strike; (2) A melody adapted for stringed instruments; (3) A satirical type of song; (4) Wordless melody or chant from the Hebrew niggun; (5) The term used for the musical accent signs (tropes) in Torah cantillation. Mizmor also has a variety of meanings. The Aramaic translation of the Bible (Targum Onkelos) translates it as my praise. The Greek and Latin versions of the Bible translate mizmor by the Greek psalmos, indicating a poem or hymn sung with instrumental accompaniment, probably a stringed instrument plucked with the fingers, taken from the Hebrew zamar, to pluck. Other meanings revolve around zemer (tune or melody). You have often seen the psalm headings L David Mizmor and Mizmor L David. The Talmud says that L David Mizmor means the Shechinah (Divine Presence) rested upon David and he then uttered that song; Mizmor L David means David first uttered that song and then the Shechinah rested upon him. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch interprets the idea of zemer as tune or melody being derived from these two psalm headings, in which an expression of feeling and emotion through melody makes the Divine Presence felt. Al-alamot (on alamot) appears in the heading of Psalm 46:1. The word is generally translated as a musical instrument. It may indicate an instrument of high soprano pitch, from the noun almah, meaning maiden. The main clue to this words definition is found in I Chronicles 15:20 with psalteries set to alamot, or set in the high range of the female singing voice. Alamot may also signify a kind of Persian lute. Since the word alam means hidden or to conceal, the word may denote a kind of lyre with a mute attached for the purpose of subduing or deadening the sound. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, with his usual penetrating insight, says that al-alamot refers to the inner ecstacy of song, a fervor or hidden inwardness of expression not apparent in the musical notes. Selah may very well have a musical significance. But what does it actually mean? Some explanations given are a silence or pause in the psalm, an instrumental interlude, a change of meter at places where the term appears, and a change of choir, or indication of which section of the psalm was to be sung by another choir. Psalms were often sung antiphonally, with two choirs answering one another. Selah could signify a raising of the vocal dynamic, equivalent to our fortissimo, deriving from salal, to raise. Just as plausibly, it could be an indication to lower the volume, deriving from salah, to lay low. Another possibility is that selah meant an interruption in the singing when the priests raised their trumpets and cymbals, and, with strong tones, marked the words just spoken, while the singers' voices stopped, or became hushed. Could selah be an acronym from the initial letters of siman leshanot hakol, sign to change the voice, or sov lema-alah hashar, go back to the beginning, O singer, the equivalent of our musical direction da capo? It has also been suggested that the Continued on page 9

JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 PAGE 8 FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARTHA SIVERTSON Every month Roz asks for our articles for the next month of Gateways by the 10 th. I have to admit, it is usually a scramble as I slide my missive into her box the day of or slightly after well, maybe a few days after. This month, maybe, for the first time, I have a good excuse. A Kosher Taste of Cleveland! I cannot say enough about our KTC Committee. From our fearless co-chairs, Rene and Irit Rawraway and Steve and Rena Wertheim, to our day of set-up and clean-up crew, you have my undying admiration and thanks. Look how happy our co-chairs are in these pictures. This could be YOU next year! Please let me know if you would like to serve in any capacity for KTC 2016 Sunday, May 15. No experience necessary. Aside from the highlights of the fabulous food and dramatic décor this year, it was a total family affair for me, personally. My husband, on drums, brought his band together with my younger daughter, Annie, singing an occasional tune. Annie actually lives in Boston where she is a singer/songwriter and works as a producer for the NPR station, WBUR. My older daughter, Julia, came up from Columbus with her boyfriend to tend bar and develop what turned out to be the best of all signature drinks. The CST 75 is really a French 75 with a splash of Stirrings grenadine (pomegranate). Julia is a craft beer specialist and can t wait for her first invitation to do a tasting up here! We have some extra Recipe and Sponsors booklets so feel free to pick one up in the Atrium next time you are here. The booklet lists the entire committee including our Mashgiach mob of Toby Rosenberg, Ellen Greenfield, Natalie Barr and, of course, Rabbi Kosak. It s pretty amazing how much someone can learn about kashrut when you are hit over the head with it! Events like A Kosher Taste of Cleveland bring together not just the CST community but many others in our area. Why, we even had a couple come from Ashland, Ohio this year! I will be looking for their feedback as we invite the entire planet to our upcoming 75 th Anniversary events in August and October. Then, collaborating with the Maltz Museum, we will bring the Cleveland s Funniest Rabbi Contest to CST on Sunday, November 15. We will be looking for help to revive the Chanukah auction which will also be held on November 15. Call me. Write me. Tackle me in the halls. We ll need your help as we continue to build on the success! Martha

PAGE 9 JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 RABBINIC SEARCH UPDATE We are pleased to announce that Harlin Adelman, Rachel Browner, Deborah Coleman, Lora Cover, Jeff Epstein, Jay Geller, Rachel Lappen, Lois Novikoff, Mitchell Schneider, and Stuart Sharpe have agreed to serve on the newly appointed Rabbinic Search Committee. In seating this Committee, we have consulted with the synagogue s leadership and have carefully chosen a diverse group of congregants who will work together to choose our next Rabbi. We are grateful that Laurie Mitchell has agreed to serve as a consultant to the Committee, guiding us with her professional skills, insight, and long experience in employment and leadership recruitment. It was not possible for us to include all congregants who volunteered to serve on the Committee. We appreciate the willingness of everyone who offered, and we assure the entire congregation that there will be many opportunities throughout the process for everyone to have an ear and a voice in this important search and selection process. We urge you to share any comments or suggestions with us, or with members of the Committee, at any time. Our Committee will begin its work next week, and is committed to a diligent, thorough, thoughtful, inclusive, and unhurried process that will bring us through a successful search. We are excited about the task ahead and have confidence that we will find an excellent Rabbi who fits our congregation well and will join us in a strong and secure future. Sincerely, Ted Einhorn & David Hutt, Co-Chairs For continuous updates, go to our website at RABBI S ARTICLE CON T. FROM PAGE 4 May the work we have done together be a blessing of strength and a source of courage, as it is for me. May our past together be an inspiration for our futures. May the trust you have placed in Rick Kodish and Jeff Epstein as your future lay leaders be blessed and repaid in multiples; may their gifts of vision of concern guide CST during this time of transition. May you be blessed to acquire an interim rabbi who will hold a holy space for this community until a more permanent Rav appears. May you earn one another's trust, and see one another for who you each are, and may you cherish each other. Warmth and blessings as always, David CANTOR S ARTICLE CON T. FROM PAGE 6 verses in which selah occurs were repeated, either by another choir, or by the instruments, the same as our present day musical term ritornello. Try this one on for size: selah may possibly denote a drum in the shape of a basket, from the Hebrew sal, meaning basket. When struck, this basket-drum indicated either a change of melody or Fine, the end of the psalm. It is fascinating to imagine what the music of Solomon s Temple was really like. The more we learn about the sacred music of ancient Israel, the more we discover that there is much we do not know. We may never uncover the true meaning of the word SELAH in our Tehillim (Psalms), but isn't it fun to explore the myriad of possibilities? L shalom, Cantor Gary

JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 NEWS FROM FACE TO FACE DIRECTOR LOUISE FREILICH A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah A Trip South Visiting Museums on the Way Recently, on our way down to South Carolina to visit my husband s aunt and uncle, we spent a day in Cincinnati visiting The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education (CHHE) and also The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. At the CHHE, which is housed currently in The Rockwern Academy Jewish day school, we arrived just in time to join a tour with a group of eighth graders from a Catholic school and sit in on the talk by a Mr. Miller who shared his interesting Holocaust story with the students. Clearly, it was familiar territory. The section of the program beforehand, with the docent who led the tour, included a discussion of race as a social construct rather than a biological one. It is always interesting for me to see how Holocaust education for teens (and adults) is approached in other locations around the country and around the world. After lunch on our Cincinnati day, we headed over to The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to see a moving exhibition Unlocking the Gates of Auschwitz 70 Years Later. The exhibition, which was curated by the CHHE ran from January 30 until May 26 at the Underground Railroad museum. The exhibit weaved together artifacts, photographs and personal stories of Auschwitz survivors, Bella Ouziel and Werner Coppel. I was particularly impressed with a panel in the exhibit about the Nazi s use of deceptive language. The chart, which I studiously copied for future use with the Face to Face volunteers, students and teachers, covers such terms as Resettlement, Judenfrei, Extermination, Liquidation, Special Treatment, and Final Solution, outlining What they said, What it was and What it meant. The CHHE is hoping to tour the exhibit nationally. If it comes to Cleveland I hope that many of you will get the chance to see this well done exhibition. In the meantime if any of you get to Cincinnati both the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center are worth checking out. I wished we had arrived earlier to the Underground Railroad museum when I would have been fresher and better able to focus on the multitude of material about the history of slavery and the courageous people who fought against slavery. The section of the museum on current day slavery was the most emotional for me. I fervently hope that someday man s cruelty to others will cease. We certainly have a long way to go and that fact reminds me of the importance of Holocaust education at Face to Face and elsewhere. We are looking forward to our final Face to Face session for the school-year on Tuesday June 2 nd and our annual end of year staff and volunteer appreciation luncheon on June 4 th. This year we will be celebrating Face to Face s 21 st anniversary, a year during which we educated close to 3,000 students. 12 JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 PAGE 12 UPDATE FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR MORAH ILANA YARES Whenever someone does something foolish, we like to say that they are from Chelm. Chelm seems to be the place where we can explain away silly stories about problems in the world. Even children are able to understand these nonsensical stories. Although I enjoy all of the stories about the fools of Chelm, below are two of my favorites. A young scholar of Chelm, innocent in the ways of earthly matters, was stunned one morning when his wife gave birth. Quickly, he ran to the rabbi. Rabbi, he blurted out, an extraordinary thing has happened! Please explain it to me. My wife has just given birth although we have been married only three months! How can this be? Everyone knows it takes nine months for a baby to be born! The rabbi, a world-renowned sage, put on his silver-rimmed spectacles and furrowed his brow reflectively. My son, he said, I can see you haven t the slightest idea about such matters, nor can you make the simplest calculation. Let me ask you: Have you lived with your wife three months? Yes. She has lived with you three months? Yes. Together have you lived three months? Yes. What s the total then three months plus three plus three? Nine months, Rabbi! So what is the problem? Usually, though, the Wise Men of Chelm stories focus on the collective foolishness of the townspeople. They are forever meeting to solve the great issues of the time, as the following story suggests. The people of Chelm were worriers. So they called a meeting to do something about the problem of worry. A motion was duly made and seconded to the effect that Yossel, the cobbler be retained by the community as a whole to do its worrying, and that his fee be one ruble per week. The motion was about to carry, all speeches having been for the affirmative, when one sage propounded the fatal question: If Yossel earned a ruble a week, what would he have to worry about? It seems at the core that these stories are just ridiculous and who could ever make such a mistake. However, maybe the people of Chelm are not educated. They need to be provided with a good education in order to understand their nonsensical ways. At The Open Dor Academy (TODA) TM we have strived to do this all year. We have had tefillot, intensive MyArk TM units, special grade level programs such as Hagigat HaTorah, B nai Emunah, and B nai Torah, and weekly learning sessions. As another school year comes to a close, please remember that TODA is here all summer with learning opportunities available. May we all be educated, unlike the fools of Chelm, and I hope to see you all at shul soon! Morah Ilana Celebrate with the Wertheims! Shabbat, June 20 Lunch in honor of Walter who turns 90 years of age and 75 years in this country! Walter with Lottie Cohn at the Men s Club Barbecue, August 2014

JUNE 2015 /SIVAN/TAMMUZ 5775 PAGE 16 Dear Shaarey Tikvah; This could be seen as a love letter of sorts, a proclamation of appreciation, and a moment in time to utter my true thanks and gratitude. As many if not all of you know, I am going to be stepping down as the Youth Director at our congregation after the school year. This year will have marked my 9th year of affiliation with United Synagogue Youth, and the years are longer when you include Kadima. USY and, more importantly, Shaarey Tikvah, helped mold this lifelong public school attendee into a passionate and active Jew to someone who doesn't shy away from leading services, discussing halacha and debating about the place of Judaism in modern day. I was groomed as a leader, taught how to create minutes and flyers and had instilled in me the importance of being a good dugmah (example). I do not even have to hesitate to say I would not be the person I am today without USY and, bigger than that, without the Shaarey Tikvah family. It has been such a joy and privilege to help our teens grow into themselves, to work through the tough challenges life brings their way (you could not pay me to be back in high school...) and to learn how to make Judaism their own. I cannot wait to continue to watch the students grow and foster these relationships outside of the student/advisor lens. If you know of anyone who would make a good fit or enjoy this work please let me know, for this really is the opportunity of a lifetime and I cannot wait to see who takes the reins next. On the tone of what is next to come... STUSY has elected a new Executive Board! President Executive Vice President Communications Vice President Israel Affairs Vice President Membership and Kadima Vice Present Religion and Education Vice President Social Action/Tikkun Olam Vice President Honorary Board Member Emily Einhorn Keeva Schneider Sarah Borow Danny Simon Sophie Browner Ali Ninyo Noa Immerman Barak Spector, President Emeritus Hannah Borrow, CRUSY Regional President B'ahava; Katie CRUSY S NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD
