4 FEBRUARY 2019/SHEVAT/ADAR I 5779 PAGE 4 A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SCOTT ROLAND AND PRESIDENT JEFF EPSTEIN When the Holy One of Blessing was about to give the Torah to Israel, God asked, Will you accept My Torah? Indeed, they replied. Then give me a surety that you will fulfill it, God said. Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rivkah, and Jacob, Leah and Rachel will be our surety, they answered. Whereupon God responded, Your patriarchs required guarantors for themselves Then our children shall be our guarantors, they exclaimed. The Holy One of Blessing immediately accepted them as sureties and gave the Torah to Israel, as it is said: Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings you have found strength (Ps. 8:3). **From Midrash Tanhuma Vayigash 2:2** Dear Friends, At the foot of Mount Sinai, our ancestors made a commitment with God that our children would be the ones who support our relationship with God s Torah. In many communities, young couples wait until they have children, or even until it is time for b nai mitzvah prep before seeking out a synagogue. One of the reasons that our families fell in love with the Shaarey Tikvah community is that many in our community choose early on to bring their children to shul. By doing so, our children fulfill their obligation to support our relationship with God, Torah, and the Jewish community. Our children s questions encourage us to dig deeper into the well of Torah to find them the most honest answers. Our children s sense of awe moves us to stand before God with childlike wonder. Their example should welcome us to sing out to the Holy One of Blessing without embarrassment or self-doubt. We must also be exemplars for our community s children. When we take our conversations with God seriously, so will they. When we refrain from extraneous talking, show proper respect to our synagogue and its leaders, and prioritize our sacred rites, so will they. It is important for our congregation to give parents and children the space to learn in this way. Likewise, it is important for parents and children to take care to minimize behavior that distracts from focus and prayer. As we welcome children at Shaarey Tikvah, we must also recognize the role that each adult in the community plays in preserving the synagogue as a special place for learning, prayer, and community. In this spirit, our synagogue board approved the following guidelines to serve as reminders to regulars and visitors alike: 1. We expect that children will be active participants in the ritual, social, and educational life of our synagogue. During services and other programs, we ask parents to assure that your children remain with you or in children s programming, when available. 2. We trust parents to recognize when your children may be interrupting the solemnity of certain parts of our services and to act upon that recognition. 3. Our bimah is just as much a place for children to express their relationship with the Holy Blessed One as it is for the rest of the congregation. However, there are certain times when their presence on the bimah may be a distraction and certain behaviors that are inappropriate on the bimah. Do not permit your children on the bimah during the kedusha, Torah and Haftarah readings, the sermon, and during mourner s Kaddish or quietly guide them off. At other times, coming close to see the Torah, or to visit the rabbi is acceptable. Climbing on furniture and swinging on railings is not. 4. One of the best ways for children to learn our prayers is through osmosis. Consider providing books, blocks, or other shul-appropriate toys for your children to enjoy while taking in everything else that is happening in our educational, social, and ritual life. Reach out to the Rabbi, or our educators, for suggestions if need be.
5 PAGE 5 FEBRUARY 2019/SHEVAT/ADAR I Only parents are responsible for guiding their children. If you take issue with a child s behavior, first take a moment to remember that a little understanding goes a long way. A child s presence in the synagogue is ultimately to the benefit of the entire Jewish community. If you continue to be perturbed by a child s behavior, communicate with that child s parents in an appropriate way, time, and place. It is never appropriate for you to speak in front of a child as if his or her presence is not welcome in the synagogue. 6. We will make every effort to provide amplification, even in small venues, so that normal and appropriate child-like noises do not interfere with anyone s ability to hear in services or during a class/guest speaker. 7. As a community that warmly welcomes the participation of our youngest congregants, we should prepare any guests and speakers to expect children wherever our community gathers. And all your children [banayikh] shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children (Isaiah 54:13). Do not read your children [banayikh], but your builders [bonayikh]. **Talmud Brachot 64a) Our children have been giving us opportunities for sacred relationship since their souls joined us at Mount Sinai as we received our Holy Torah. May they continue to do so, and may we let them. Bivracha, with blessings for our entire community, Jeff Epstein, President Rabbi Scott B. Roland Mary Poppins Purim Wednesday, March 20 Seudah, Spiel, abbreviated Megillah reading 6:30pm Full reading 8pm
