Page 3 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 Board Member Focus Karen Mintzer is a native Clevelander with a Master's Degree in Social Service Administration from Case Western Reserve University. Karen currently is the Services Manager for Help Me Grow of Cuyahoga County where she has worked for 20 years overseeing early intervention and other services for families with young children. Karen is married to Barry Mintzer and has two children - Katie (our Youth Director, who also works at United Way) and Sam who is a first year law student at The Ohio State University. Both Karen and Barry grew up at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah (which was then called Mayfield Hillcrest Synagogue) although the are SURE that they didn't know each other growing up! Karen and Barry joined their families at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah after they got married. This included Leanne Leavitt (Karen's mom), David Leavitt (Karen's brother) and many of Barry's aunts, uncles and cousins! Our Front Cover... Part of the 75 th Anniversary research has lead us to hear the story of the Ark windows. Dina Shtull, daughter of Rita and Rabbi Jacob Shtull, of blessed memory, wrote a children s book called Why the Rabbi Played Clarinet in the Sauna where the brief story is told. Rabbi Shtull s family business in Montreal was called The Egg Factory. It was housed in a building that was once a synagogue. These Star of David windows were doors in one of the back rooms. By combining meaningful and joyful worship, serious Jewish learning, social action and compelling Shabbat and holiday experiences, we create a vibrant spiritual community.

Page 4 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 A from RABBI DAVID KOSAK A number of congregants have approached me stating that it would be useful to include some laws and customs of an upcoming holiday in that month s bulletin. Below are a few laws of Hanukkah from our sources along with a few comments I have appended to each. I wish you all a happy and joyous Hanukkah, and hope those of you with children or grandchildren will join us on Thursday, December 25th, for the second annual Version 2.0 (see page 14). Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat 21b Our Rabbis taught: The hanukkiah should be placed just outside the door of one's home. But if one lives in the upper room - one places it in the window closest to the public domain. In a time of danger - leave it on the table and that is enough. These days, few of us place our hanukkiot outside the door, although in Israel many individuals have glass-walled tanks, like a small aquarium, into which they place their hanukkiot. This prevents the candles from being blown out, while fulfilling the true essence of the mitzvah, which is to let others know about the miracle of Hanukkah. If one can t do that, the next best option is to place a hanukkiah in the window facing the (busiest) street your home fronts. Finally, in times where persecution and antisemitism were strongest, one was permitted to light indoors, away from a window. In our day, in America, all who light indoors should endeavor to do so by the window. Shulkhan Arukh, Orach Hayyim 671:2 (Rabbi Joseph Karo, , Spain and Israel. Rabbi Moshe Isserles, , Poland) R. Karo: How many candles should one light? On the first night light one. From this point on add one each night until on the last night there are 8 candles. And even if there are many people in the household, do not light more than that. R. Isserles: And there are those who claim that each and every person in the household lights. And this is the straightforward practice. And they should be careful [when more than one person lights] to have each hanukkiah in a unique place, so that it will be easily known how many candles are lit. Candles are added to the hanukkiah from right to left, but lit from left to right. Since many families do light multiple hanukkiyot, these need to be placed apart so that a passerby who glances at your window will be able to discern what night of Hanukkah it is. If the hanukkiot are all placed together, it becomes difficult to count the candles. Normally a foot or so between hanukkiot will suffice. The requirement to perform the mitzvah in this way is to publicize it. שולחן ערוך אורח חיים סימן תרעו סעיף ג מי שלא הדליק ואינו עתיד להדליק באותו הלילה, וגם א אין מדליקין עליו בתוך ביתו, כשרואה נר חנוכה מברך: שעשה נסים, ובליל ראשון מברך גם: שהחיינו, ואם אח"כ בליל ב' או ג' בא להדליק אינו חוזר ומברך: שהחיינו. Concerning a person who did not light, and is unlikely to light (the hanukkiah) on a given night, and no one in his/her house will light on his/her behalf: When the person sees a hanukkiah elsewhere, he or she should make the blessing she-asah nisim. On the first night, one should also say the she-hekhiyanu... Con t. on page 20

Page 5 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 A from President LESLIE SOBEL Most of you know that I was an Agnon parent and most of you would probably presume that I was active in its culture. Like most parents, I was involved not only in the day to day activity of my boys but in the programming and fundraising of the school. I chose to help with the spring auction where I met one of our past executive directors, Nancy Kekst, and many other current Shaarey Tikvah members. The original auction had been almost private, being held at individual homes, and open to those that purchased an expensive raffle ticket. Nancy was going to make it into an accessible event that parents and the community could easily support. Throughout those years I worked with many volunteer chairs of the auction. It eventually became my turn to chair the program and I am happy to say my co-chairs and I were able to bring new ideas into the auction and increase revenues brought into the school. Today that auction is the largest fundraising event at the school. The friends I made at Agnon brought me into Shaarey Tikvah. When I became a member, I did not know about Chanukah Day of Fun. My children loved the games and turning all their tickets into the redemption center for the prizes. The auction was the synagogue s largest fundraiser where everyone volunteered, ate latkes, and enjoyed being together. Upon joining the CST board, Roberta Kaplan approached me to take over the auction. After my commitment to the Agnon auction, I agreed. That was more than 10 years ago and during that time the event went through many iterations. Those that chaired the games, kitchen, prizes and auction during those years included, Gary Bakst, Ruth Bakst, Rena Wertheim, Leslie Granoff, Abby Stadlin, Jeff Epstein, Rachel Lappen, Shirley Hoffman, Arielle Cohen, Toby Rosenberg, Amy Lipson and Jodi Spiegel Our technology supervisor from my beginnings was Ron Fersky who wrote and annually updated the auction software program, input auction items, and manned the day of the event programming and finance. All these people, as well as our unbelievable staff, gave so much of themselves with a smile. Unfortunately, this will be the first year that CST will not have a Chanukah auction. I believe at some time in the future another Chanukah auction will be reimagined. In the meantime, the Men s Club Version 2.0 event on December 25 th was a great success last year and will continue this year as a way for our families to enjoy the day together, eating latkes and playing games. Kesher Chanukah offers a way to share greetings, raise money for CST and other community programs. Martha is also looking into the possibility of an online auction. And our signature fundraiser, Kosher Taste of Cleveland, has already had an initial meeting with co -chairs Steve and Rena Wertheim and Rene and Irit Rawraway. We are very lucky to have such a great foursome to lead this event which will have a 75 th anniversary theme. As the calendar turns to 2015, please save Sunday May 17 th for A Kosher Taste of Cleveland. As always, I am sure it will be a great evening. A Kosher Taste of Cleveland was imagined by a talented group in What great work was done! It is important to do what works and what we do well, while not being stagnant and inflexible. It s not always easy to know what will work but we are always open to suggestions for things you may like. Shaarey Tikvah belongs to all its members and we would like you to let us know the needs and desires of your family. My guys have special memories of Chanukah Day of Fun but they are now grown and we need you to let us know your wants and wishes and the best ways to fulfill those desires. We have a full calendar of programming at CST but would like to know what it is that touches you. Help me help you. Keeping Shaarey Tikvah relevant and meaningful is my reason for staying active in the synagogue. I look forward to learning what it is that makes Shaarey Tikvah special for you and what things you might like to see in the future. Leslie

Page 6 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 A from CANTOR GARY PALLER We cantors are always looking for new music for Chanukah. Recently, Cantor Steve Stein of Congregation Beth El in Akron shared a new composition with me. The words and music are by a west coast composer named Sandy Sherman. The melody is engaging and accessible, and I am particularly moved by the lyrics. You can watch and listen to a choral performance of the song on You Tube; here is the link: I want to share the lyrics with you. There s something about those candles, That fills us up with joy. They set our hearts in motion Just like a dreidle toy. There s something about those candles That says Do not forget! It s more than just another tale Remember tears and sweat. There s something about those candles, The passion in each flame. To all who fight for freedom The journey is the same. There s something about those candles That shed their light each year. The miracle of Chanukah Is that we still are here. There s Something About Those Candles Lyrics & Music By Sandy Sherman Chanukah..Let each candle help us see. Chanukah..Let s thank God that we are free. Chanukah. Let it shine in you and me, And glow with hope from long ago There s something about those candles, The peace that they create. The mystery and wonder About the number eight. There s something about those candles, How they defy the dark. When each one is ignited, It lights a holy spark. Chanukah.Let its light make us aware. Chanukah. There s a world that needs repair. Chanukah.Let each candle be a prayer, And glow with hope from long ago. There s something about those candles..something about those candles..something about those candles. Difficult challenges face all of us daily. As crazy and mixed up as things get, we must fight to remain positive. In fact, it is when life is at its most unmanageable that we need to redouble our efforts to sustain our positive energy and enthusiasm. It is too easy to let malaise or indifference creep into our consciousness, especially when bombarded by the harsh realities of today s world. We dare not allow ourselves to become dispirited. We must defy the dark and fight to keep our idealism alive, our dream of what the world could be. We must continue to live our lives as if the world is the place we want it to be. That may sound naive, but I think it is the only way to effect positive change. We yearn for comfort amidst the chaos. The comfort is in never letting go of the tenderness of human embrace, in never succumbing to the clamor. This year, may the Chanukah candles help us to find the warmth and comfort we so desperately need. Chag Urim Samei-ach, Cantor Gary

Page 7 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 From the of the Executive Director M MARTHA SIVERTSON I attended a meeting at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland last week where directors of development and directors of marketing sat at a large table and talked about changes in their prospective organizations and celebrations yet to come. Considering that these people are the cheerleader captains of their agencies, I was more than happy to be a part of this fired up group. Everyone reported on something exciting galas, international speakers, special exhibitions and, of course, milestone anniversaries. Our 75 th Anniversary ranks well up there, giving Shaarey Tikvah another chance to shine! In the past month, I have had the privilege of being the repository of some of our congregants treasures. Consecration pictures from the 80 s, 90 s and early 2000 s. Wedding pictures. Confirmation pictures. A movie made in 1986 showing the procession into our new digs at Fairmount. A video presentation from our 60 th Anniversary. Articles about our former clergy, staff and congregants who have given CST the rich history we are celebrating ourselves this coming year. However, the true pleasure of my job has come from talking with you. I won t give away any of the answers just yet but did you know whose hair caught on fire at a Chanukah celebration above the Tasty Shop? Do you know from where the circular stained glass windows on the ark came? Do you know which Rabbi played the clarinet in the sauna? Mainly, though, do you know some of the histories of people whose names are on our walls? I believe our milestone anniversary will help give us all a new perspective on who we were, who we are, and what s to come. It s not too late to talk to me about what s in your attic, both literally and figuratively. I will collect your pictures and articles up until December 15 th but stories, anytime! Martha I can see Schechter from my backyard! Ever wonder why we have a hole in the wall in our north parking lot? It s not just to get a view of Gross Schechter Day School. With peaked interest and many road trips, Martha noted that many holes along the highway have markers with either HYDT or just a giant H with numbers. Duh. It marks where a fire hydrant is on the other side of the wall. We have no hydrant indicator on I-271. Check it out next time you park in the back. You can even have an extra 15 minutes of fun making it an I Spy game for your kids stuck in the car. How many holes in the highway walls can you find?

Page 8 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 Volunteers Needed from Face to Face Director L LOUISE FREILICH We still could use a few wonderful volunteers at Face to Face sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, especially for the January, February and March months when several of our regular docents take off for warmer climes. Being a Face to Face docent is a great volunteer position. It does not take up a lot of time but is very meaningful. And, our volunteer team is made up of friendly, welcoming people. How many volunteer opportunities can you say that about? It is a great chance for someone who has recently retired or a parent of pre-school or school-aged children who wants a change of pace for a bit. If you, or someone you know is interested please have them contact me at face2face@shaareytikvah.org or , ext You do not need to be a Congregation Shaarey Tikvah member to participate. We ll get you oriented and ready to teach young minds from throughout Northeast Ohio in just a few sessions. Thoughts about the Kindertransport A Holocaust Education Program at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah Now that I m finished thinking about commemorating Kristallnacht this year, I am turning my attention to the Kindertransport, a rescue program that brought 10,000 Jewish children from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia to England without their parents. This effort took place between December 1938 and September 1939 when World War II began and such rescue work was no longer possible. Between February 27 and March 22, 2015, The Pianist of Willesden Lane will be the production at the Cleveland Playhouse (CPH). The one-person show tells the story of Lisa Jura who was on the Kindertransport. At age 14, pianist Lisa Jura was separated from everything and everyone she knew and loved. In The Pianist of Willesden Lane, Jura s daughter, renowned pianist Mona Golabek, brings her mother s true tale of survival and triumph to the stage. Featuring live performances of classics by Chopin, Beethoven, and Debussy, Pianist is a deeply moving story infused with hope and the life-affirming power of music. CST Sisterhood will be holding two events surrounding this CPH production. On Monday March 9, instead of having a short story discussion group, Sisterhood will be hosting their first book discussion group on The Children of Willesden Lane by Mona Golabek, the book on which the play was based. We plan to have Face to Face speakers, George Kronenberg and Walter Wertheim, who were on the Kindertransport, tell us about their experiences that evening. Then on Sunday March 15, we have booked a block of tickets for the Sunday afternoon performance. This will be a benefit for Face to Face; the amount above our cost for the tickets will go to making sure that students from needy schools may benefit from a Face to Face fieldtrip. The performance is recommended for ages 10+ so please consider putting this on your calendar for you and your children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews older than ten. Please contact Ruth Bakst at zimsausa2@gmail.com or (440) / (440) or Louise Freilich at face2face@shaareytikvah.org or (216) , ext. 140 to reserve your spot in the group and purchase tickets. Both events are open to women and men, and we ll welcome non-cst members as well as those who call Shaarey Tikvah their spiritual home. 10 Page 10 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet Update from the Education Director I MORA ILANA YARES This month we will celebrate the holiday of Chanukah. Because we live in America, Chanukah has become more secularized and it is all about the biggest gift. We are no longer remembering the true meaning of the holiday. One of my favorite songs for Chanukah is Light One Candle by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Light one candle for the Maccabee children With thanks their light didn't die; Light one candle for the pain they endured When their right to exist was denied; Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice Justice and freedom demand; And light one candle for the wisdom to know That the peacemaker's time is at hand! Chorus: Don't let the light go out, It's lasted for so many years! Don't let the light go out! Let it shine through our love and our tears! Light one candle for the strength that we need To never become our own foe; Light one candle for those who are suff'ring A pain they learned so long ago; Light one candle for all we believe in, That anger not tear us apart; And light one candle to bind us together With peace as the song in our heart! [Chorus:] What is the memory that's valued so highly That we keep it alive in that flame? What's the commitment to those who have died? We cry out "they've not died in vain," We have come this far, always believing That justice will somehow prevail; This is the burden, This is the promise, This is why we will not fail! [Chorus:] Don't let the light go out! Don't let the light go out! Don't let the light go out! So, don t let the light go out. It is important for us to remember the small miracles of life. One of my favorite books to read is Small Jewish Miracles that tells of the miracles in the lives of ordinary people. As we are in the midst of the darkness of winter, we should not let the light go out. Happy Chanukah, Morah Ilana

Page 11 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 Kesher Chanukah 2014 Our 2013 Kesher project was so successful, we d like to do it again! Let s support the Community AND make our Members smile!! Our annual Kesher Chanukah sends greetings to members of our synagogue community. This year, we will once again support the wider community by using the value of your gift to support Cleveland-area families (Jewish and not) this winter. You have received a Latke Letter with greetings from families within our kehillah. Each letter represents monies raised to benefit our congregation and the larger community. Each greeting is still only $5! You can also choose reciprocal greetings to automatically send greetings to all who sent you a greeting. You may send your Chanukah greetings to as many members as you wish. The more you send, the less each greeting costs, and the more we can do for those in need. DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5!

Page 13 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 To my dear friends and members of the best shul in the country (If I say city it would only mean Beachwood), Now it can be told, I m just an old softy. On November 15 at the annual Sisterhood Shabbat, co-president of our Sisterhood, Roberta Kaplan, made a great presentation on my behalf as this year s Woman of the Year. At that time, she pointed out some of the volunteer work I have done (including as a past Sisterhood president) for our shul, Sisterhood, and auxiliaries these past 40+ years. After the presentation I was expected (I m sure) to respond and I expected to do so. But the tears were appearing and I couldn t talk except to say thank you. Big deal! Therefore, this letter. Now, to those present, my sincere appreciation for your attendance for the great Sisterhood Shabbat service and to those who had done their specific jobs so well. And, of course, the delicious luncheon prepared by some of our Sisterhood members. I think you have realized by now that you are all my second family, and that I care so much. Fondly, Jackie Chernin (We appreciate Jackie Chernin s donation given for the publication of this letter.) Are you planning to travel to Israel with us? June 11-23, 2015 See application on opposite page, or go to for additional information Rabbi Kosak hopes that you ll be joining him!

Page 15 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 Sisterhood News Shalom. It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is behind us and that we are approaching the New Year!! I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. November was a wonderful month for Sisterhood. We had our short story night November 10 th. It was chaired by Lois Novikoff and her committee and attended by over 30 men and women. We broke into 2 groups that were facilitated by Nina Rosner and Debby Rosenthal, who lead lively discussions with great questions. November 15 th was Sisterhood Shabbat which was a very snowy but special morning. We were grateful that all three honorees were able to make it to shul that morning. We honored Jackie Chernin as the 2014 Sisterhood Woman of the Year, Pam Weismann as the 2013 Woman of the year and Diane Loveman for 40 years of service in the gift shop. Toby Rosenberg, Natalie Barr, Shirley Hoffman, Ellen Greenfield, Ruth Bakst, Debbie Swisshelm, Harriet Friedman and many other volunteers helped prepare an outstanding luncheon. A special thank you goes out to Ruth Bakst for her outstanding leadership in making that morning so special. Her committee and over 50 participating women showed the strength of Shaarey Tikvah s women. Our hat theme was a lot of fun and many of our male congregants also got in the spirit by donning hats. Thank you everyone for making this a great morning. We are looking forward to more great programs. Please mark your calendars now for: January 10th, our family Havdalah night; February 8th, our adult games night; March 1st, our hamentashen bakeoff; March 9th, our book review of The Children of Willesden Lane; and, our Sisterhood congregational event attending the production of the play The Pianist of Willesden Lane, based on the book, on Sunday afternoon, March 15 th. We still need volunteers to help with these events. Please consider shopping in our Sisterhood gift shop for any occasion!! Leanne will be extending her time on Sunday mornings so that you can come in to the shul to shop. A special thank you to the over 75 women who have sent in their Sisterhood dues. Thank you for your support. If you have not sent in your Sisterhood dues it is not too late. Contact me and I will be happy to send you a dues form. Happy 75 th to Shaarey Tikvah. As the leaves begin to fall off the trees, this is not only a clear sign that winter is approaching, but also that the school year is underway! Members of our USY chapter attended Fall Boards/Freshman Kinnus in Detroit, Michigan. They spent the weekend developing leadership skills and learning what it means to serve on a board. They also met new friends, learned how to be an informed advocate for Israel and davened in a stunning chapel with 100 other teens. As always, I couldn t be more proud of our teens for leading services, participating in dialogues and singing loud and proud at ruach! Members of our USY chapter also attended Fall Kinnus in Cincinnati; spending Shabbat with friends from across the region- they really had a blast! Locally we have hosted a movie night and a lounge night for the teens last month in addition to the first annual Daven, Drash and Dine (formally known as Lunch and Learn) where we had a teen service and an open discussion about the balance and importance of one s Judaism, how to keep the connection to our faith strong in a secular world, and how to balance some of the conflicting demands of public school. Kadima Kinnus is December 12 th -14 th in Columbus. If your 6 th -8 th grade student wants to meet fellow middle schoolers from across the Midwest while learning, praying, eating and just having a blast, let me know and we will get them signed up! The Kadimanicks also took a trip to Zero Gravity for an afternoon of intense laser tag - who knew laser tag could be so much fun! The chapters are both busy planning upcoming social, religious and volunteer projects. I know I am looking forward to seeing what our teens come up with! Please save the date for February 26 th - March 1 st, when Park, B nai Jeshurun and CST are joining together to host the regional specialty convention. We will be looking for individuals to help out in a variety of ways and to show the teens from across the Midwest the incredible homey environment at CST! B ahava! Katie

Page 20 December 2014/ Kislev/Tevet 5775 THE SENIOR CAFÉ AT CST GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! Join friends and peers once a month for our free midday coffee klatch. Conversation, a changing selection of light, breezy activities and occasional speakers on topics of interest. When: Third Wednesday of each month 1:30 3:00 pm Contact: Judy Friedman (216) Shirley Hoffman (440) NEXT CAFÉ Wednesday, December 17th SANDRA BUZNEY will be the featured speaker. Her topic is: "What are "they" saying about estate planning and Medicaid: Dispelling some common misconceptions and myths." Transportation available Rabbi s Article cont. from page 4 Many of us work long hours in Cleveland proper or elsewhere, and may not be able to get home in time for lighting the hanukkiah on all eight nights. In such a case, one can call home to make sure that someone will light a hanukkiah especially for them. Should they forget to do so, one should make an effort to look for a lit hanukkiah by one s place of work in order to recite the she-asah nisim blessing. שולחן ערוך אורח חיים סימן תרעט א בערב שבת מדליקין נר חנוכה תחלה ואח"כ נר שבת. הגה: ומברך עליהם כמו בחול, אע"פ שמדליקין בעוד היום גדול. On erev Shabbat, one first lights the Hanukkah lights, and afterwards lights the Shabbat candles. One blesses them as on the other days, even though it is still day [and thus not time to light the hanukkiah]. The normative Jewish custom is that a woman immediately accepts Shabbat upon herself after lighting the Shabbat candles, and thus can t engage in any prohibited actions, such as lighting another fire. For this reason, it is proper for all of us, female or male, to light the Hanukkah lights first, and only after that to light the Shabbat candles. Blessings of light and warmth, David
