3 About Me How I Got Interested in This Topic Born in Texas but raised in Missouri and Lived in New York for 4 years I was a fashion design student and lived in NYC for 4 years after graduation Undergraduate at Missouri State University and Grad school at Mizzou Worked in a rural school & now in a suburban setting

10 Challenges Some years it s hard to get members due to other clubs Some teachers won t do the lessons or do them poorly Some lessons have been a bit advanced and I ve had to adjust them Some kids don t believe in the message

Whether at school, home, sports, etc. How does it feel when you accomplish something that was hard to do? Do you feel more pride in the things that were difficult for you? Why or why not?

18 Thoughts on the Video What do you think about him being proud to wear the badge of nerd? Is that something that middle schoolers are normally proud to be called? What do you think about what he says is his greatest accomplishment? Do you agree with him? He says he had natural talent for football and had to work hard to read. Why is he more proud of that even though it s not as flashy and doesn t fill a stadium with fans like football does? The story says his greatest talent is in his ability to go outside his comfort zone. Why is this more important to Steve Hartman? How do you think his book club helped him through school?

21 No Name Calling Week What Does it Mean and Why Do We Celebrate NNCW?

22 How Did NNCW Get Started? Back in 2004 James Howe wrote a book called The Misfits about middle school students who are tired of bullying and decide to change things. One of the students decides to run for student council on a No-Name Calling campaign. We hope No Name Calling WEek will inspire you to help stop bullying and harassment at our school and spread kindness instead of bullying behaviors.

24 No One Should Sit Alone Talk about your thoughts when you heard the dad say that it s so important to invite others to your lunch table even if the person isn t talking at your lunch table. Why do you think that s so important to him? How can you help others feel more included at Barnwell? Let s make a list on the board so we have a visual reminder of all the ways YOU can help others. Why do you think he says your life is more about the people around you and what you do for them?

26 Kindness Note Everyone is going to receive a kindness note to pass onto someone else. Even the staff will fill one out! You ll spend a few minutes thinking about someone you want to thank. It might be a family member, a classmate, a staff member, or a community member. As you can see from the video, it doesn t have to be a grand gesture they did for you. Just the simple act of making tea for someone can mean so much to them. Make sure to give the kindness note to the person you write it for.

27 Action Steps We hope you use No Name Calling Week to reflect on your words and actions. It s never too late to make a positive change and start being kind. Also take this week and remind yourself that you are more important than the negative words that an unhappy bully says to you. When someone says something negative towards you, it says so much more about them than it does about you. No Name Calling Week is a time to give extra celebration for our differences and what makes us amazing. It s also a reminder that you have more power than you realize. YOU are the first line of defense when you see bullying or injustice in our school. A kind word or action towards someone who has experienced bullying or harassment can be powerful and make someone feel less alone. Have a great No Name Calling Week!
