Year 8 RE Home Learning Project!

Calling all Year 8s! Your Home Learning Project for RE is about Christmas! You should complete ONE of the 3 tasks and the tasks in the Home Learning Project. Due: 11th December. You can hand your project into your teacher or it to your teacher :

How should I organise my time? You should spend 5 hours on home learning each week. We recommend you spend your time like this: o 2 hours researching your project; o 2 hours presenting your findings; o 1 hour completing your Home Learning Booklet, thinking about the Learning Habits and what you have done well.

The Learning Habits Whilst you are completing your Project, think about what Learning Habits you are using.

Literacy in RE For this project, you have 2 Literacy targets. 1. Write in formal English. 2. Develop a wide, varied and ambitious vocabulary. You should use key terms from the religion that you are teaching. 3. Proofread your work before you hand it in. Make sure your work says what you want it to say!

Task 1: Create a religious place of worship in a box and explain the meaning of it for religious believers. Places of worship are the centre of religious communities. These are the buildings that religious people come together to worship: Buddhists worship in a vihara. Christians worship in a church. Hindus worship in a mandir. Muslims worship in a mosque. Jews worship in a synagogue. Sikhs worship in a gurdwara. Question to think about What is the layout of the place of worship? What do people face when they are worshipping in this building? Why is this important? How do people use the place of worship during worship? What are the things that make a building a place of worship? What symbols would you see? What is the meaning of these symbols? If you choose this task, you should show: What the key features are of this place of worship. How religious believers act when they are in the place of worship. Why the place of worship so important for the religious believers.

Task 2: Create a religious rite of passage in a box and explain the meaning of it for religious believers. Rites of passage are the ceremonies that religious believers go through as they go through to mark them moving from one stage in their life to the next. Within a religion, there are usually rites of passage to mark the following life events: The birth of a child. Becoming an adult. Getting married. The death of a person. Question to think about What happens during the rite of passage? How do people prepare for the rite of passage? What is the symbolic meaning of the actions associated with the rites of passage? How does the religious rite of passage change the person s life? What is the religious meaning of the rite of passage and how is this shared with the religious community? If you choose this task, you should show: What happens during this rite of passage. The meaning behind the different traditions associated with the rite of passage. Why the rite of passage is so important for the religious believer.

Task 3: Create a religious festival in a box and explain the meaning of it for religious believers. Religious festivals are times of the year when religious believers come together to mark a special event in their religion s history or to focus on a particular aspect of their religious belief. Some examples of religious festivals are: Buddhism: Bodhi day, Wesak, Dhamma Day. Christianity: Christmas, Easter. Hinduism: Holi, Diwali, Navarathri. Islam: Ramadan, Eid ul Fitr, Eid ul Adha. Judaism: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Purim. Sikhism: Vaisakhi, Guru Nank Gurpurab. Question to think about What is the point of the festival? How do religious believers prepare for the festival? How do they celebrate the festival? Are there any special foods/ religious stories/ activities associated with the festival? Why is the festival important for religious believers as individuals and as a community? If you choose this task, you should show: What happens during this festival. The meaning behind the different traditions associated with the festival. Why the festival is so important for the religious believers.

Level Descriptors for the Project: To get a level 4, you need to: Describe what the key features of the place of worship, rite of passage or festival are. Suggest why the place of worship, rite of passage or festival is important to believers. To get a level 5, you need to: Explain the key features of the place of worship, rite of passage or festival by linking what they are to some of the religious beliefs. Suggest the impact of the place of worship, rite of passage or festival on the life of a religious believer. To get a level 6, you need to: Explain the key features of the place of worship, rite of passage or festival by making clear the meaning behind the different symbols associated with it. Suggest how going to the place of worship, participating in the rite of passage or religious festival will impact the life of a religious believer and the religious community.

Extension and Enrichment tasks Investigate how the different places of worship look in different countries. Explain what is the most important thing which makes a building a place of worship. Investigate the different places of worship in our local community. Compare and contrast the religious practice you have looked at with a similar religious practice from another religion. Identify what is similar and different between such practices. Design your own special place, rite of passage or festival, making clear the meaning behind your choices. Draw a timeline of a person s life and draw onto it what the rites of passage that most people will experience and when.
